Funk Rock Instrumental - Abstract Extract
https://soundcloud.com/paul-graves-1/abstract-extract This one took a while to work out. I put the song together with MIDI sequenced drums, which really helped nail the bass and guitar parts but then had a hell of a time executing the drums for real. I ended up recording the kick separately to get it tight enough. There are still portions of the MIDI snare and kick in there too, but the cymbal tracks were eliminated because generally sampled cymbals suck compared to the real thing.

I like it! Cool groove with a great feel... of course the bass has a lot to do with that IMO. All you need now is some melodies/solos riding over top.

I'm more of a rhythm player, can't you tell :) Melody and particularly lyrics have always been a tough part for me, so I try to get grooves down that are strong enough to hopefully be reasonably interesting.

Well... I can sort of hear a synth solo during a section or two. If you're interested I could give it a shot if you have a wave or MP3. No guarantee of the result, of course.

Thanks Peeps! Anyone have any experience with submitting their stuff for licensing in production work? One of my previous bands had some stuff picked up and played on TV, typically home and garden, learning channel and stuff. It was pretty cool to be watching a show and hear your music pop up in the background. Made a few royalty bucks, nothing much but anything greater than $0 will pay my overhead. stevec Well... I can sort of hear a synth solo during a section or two. If you're interested I could give it a shot if you have a wave or MP3. No guarantee of the result, of course.
I'm game, no guarantee I'll use it PM me and I'll email you a file.

The shaker kicks in at 1:30 to help the build up a bit in the middle section. Those are real el'cheapo egg shakers recorded with Rode NT5's. I just stood there and shook them under the XY setup overheads for the drums, then looped a decent measure worth.

I can't access soundcloud from work to listen to that track, but was able to get into your website and am listening to all the other tracks on Wogg Imperfect 2004. Man, I'm enjoying your tracks and do have to say that we both have similar styles (Rock/Funk)........differences being I mainly like to do solo's (guitar) LOL!!. I'd love to do some guitar work on your tracks (if you'd be interested)......digging the song "Strait Up" at the moment!!

When I played this, I immediately laid 3 tracks of rambling lead back into Sonar. I really got into it. I am not a great guitar player but sometimes hit a enough good notes to give good guitarist possible ideas. I was really going and didn't care how bad I sounded, your backing was a groovy piece. Hope I didn't degrade the sound too much, let me know it need removal. 7-20 rev https://soundcloud.com/capg/abstract-extract-excite

This mix sounds well here and as a background for a film would work, but on its own it needs something extra. Good stuff though nicely recorded and mixed, thanks for sharing.

CaptG - Sounds like you had fun jamming, keep me credited and you can keep it published on your SoundCloud if you like. My only advice on your tracks would be to focus it down, simplify and let the changes remain obvious. The chorus switch drowned out in your jam, as well as the turn around part and the simple middle part that's supposed to build back up in energy. Wookie - You're absolutely right. I love the rhythm jam in that one, but it's not interesting enough on its own as a whole without an element of melody and lead to get your average non bass / drum playing person on board. I've got a few tracks from SteveC to mix in, I'll have to post those to this thread later. If I had to describe the style element Steve is adding I'd go with early 80's Herbie Hancock. I'm still not sure that's where the final song will end up, but it sounds good for the style. I think this may end up with multiple versions online, like the Wogg version, the SteveC update... and whomever else I can coordinate with.

I understand exactly what you mean on matching the music, I should have listened several times thru before and noted the changes. I just took off like a dog with a bone and afterwards I could tell the numerous miss-matches, I had the volume up so high I missed most of those changes. Actually after listening a couple of more times I'm little embarrassed on how sloppy I was, too big a hurry to get the idea out. I only spent a couple of hours on it for fear I shouldn't be messing with other peoples music and wanted to see your response before putting a lot of time on it. Just wish I could create backup music like this. I can't find a good funky drum program. Since I'm not a good live player, I usually lay numerous guitar tracks, pick what sounds right for the section and then practice that lead until it sounds almost like I know what I'm doing. Thanks for letting me play along and will replace SC version with a more serious attempt. Again thanks for the honest feedback, do you have tracks like this? capg

Not exactly sure what you mean, but I do have a ton of tracks that were thrown together quickly. Most of them turn into nothing, or I try to finish and end up not liking it much. At some point additional time in the song doesn't yield any better results so they die. Occasionally though, a quick idea ends up awesome

I used to play the drums in a gigging band. I understand where you are coming from but it still needs some other movement for me.

Thanks, but you know I'm just throwing slop out there hoping more creative minds (or musicians) respond with versions of there own. My goal on this site is to get feedback on my mixing. Not my guitar playing because I have a handicap, and will never achieve a level of competent guitar player, yet can still get an idea across of what sounds the track can inspire, which may be different one day to the next. That's what I like about your piece. I wish I could express what it drives in my mind as what Jan Hammer would jam along, or Satch, Satrianni, on and on. I don't like my first guitar breaks on this and will wait a week and start again hopefully to lead into this with a more appropriate intro. I like my work at 1:43 but could not repeat it to save my life, its just one of those spur of the moment finger spasms'. I had to copy and paste for the second input. Anyway, since I only get that creative urge once or twice a month if then, I plan on tweaking on this track just for the pleasure, and if it sounds good, I'll send it out again. Come on folks, put your ideas out there, great for the art, and the perfection of how Sonar can be applied. enough, capg
