Fuzz bass

Hi, I'd like to get a very velvet fuzz bass sound, similar to Time is Running Out except even smoother, kind of like something out of an overly slick RnB tune. I can give a list of what I have which might be of use or no use, obviously free plug ins are an option. Cakewalk amp sim Spectra FX Alias FX I have some sonitus plug ins too.

clone a bass track, and run it thru the BOOGEX plugin (web)

    blend in to taste.

i use a sansamp bass di for all my bass tracks, you can't get 'fuzz' out of it, but it's a great unit that does have drive capability

    + 1 for Sans Amp!

I still have the first Sans Amp that came out but it's packed away downunder, it's about 20 years old.

I also like used a Boss Overdrive (OD 1) for guitar, the sounds I got stood up to a mic'd Vox AC30, it was easier to get a more in-your-face sound for recording DI using OD 1 + Sans Amp without relying too heavily on a gate if at all, that in of itself is pretty amazing for a little box (Sans) LOL!!

Point is, I can hear the noise much more 'during play' when using a gate with the AC30 for recording, so I opted for the OD 1 + Sans Amp combination instead and yeah it worked great (less noise) but beautifully, smooth as silk distortion/fuzz, but the trick is to be very careful with the settings or else it might blow the Sans Amp.

    * There are Boss Dist/Overdrive pedals for Bass, although I haven't tried them.

Nowadays, I do everything in-the-box (DAW) ever since I moved on to a total change of music direction away from 70's Classic Rock such as; Led Zeppelin and Kiss.

Best free plugin option I've found so far for bass is Voxengo Boogex.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

hehe, we're on the same page

i just used boogex on a lead vocal track, on mixdown.. just brilliant.

i suppose i could take the route of coming out of the daw, into my boogie, and mix that back in..
but i'm too lazy for that.
    LOL

there are better tube amp distortion plugins out there, to be sure, but none as good as this one for the price!

    Hi

Send me the bass performance at source as a mono stem.

And a rough stereo (cue/monitor/headphone/whatever) mix of all the other stuff your bass stem go with.
    (for reference)

Ill do what I do then send it back.
If you happen to like it Ill show you how I did it.

If your a little shy no worries. I dont need all of it. Just a couple bars of the bass at source recorded in mono.
Just dont expect it to drop right into the rest of the mix without some tweeking though

Seriously dude. Id be more than happy to give you a hand. Because you could get 3000 replies. All being very nice and having links to cool plug-ins and stuff.

But what Im offering is the way to do it.
Ask anybody who knows and theyll agree.

Just let me know if I can help

You'll be happy you did!  Little tip..  When recording with it use a 9v battery rather than the wall wart!  Less chance of some ground hum gettin in your signal.  Glad I could help! Let me know what you think when you get it.

Do it the old fashioned way, which is probably ultimately the best way. You can try any distortion pedals you might have, and of course there are bass specific ones. Or split it and DI one and feed the other into a small guitar amp, EQ'd to taste and mic it. Everyone these days seems to have the opinion that the actual performance is a trivial matter to be gotten over ASAP so we can get some plugins on the damn thing and bash into something acceptable. But how can you mix yourself while playing if you aren't hearing what it's going to ultimately be and play the distortion just as a good guitar player does? Be a man, commit to tones up front and record them.
