GAS Attack

I just bought a pair of Neumann KM184s - Nickel Finish.

This is the thread from when I did the shopping.

I'm totally psyched.

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Am I wondering if I should have gotten digital Mics?

Is anyone here using digital mics?

Only twice as expensive... maybe the next life.

I'm not sure if I'd want the A/D right in the mic...  ESPECIALLY with digital, things are always improving and that would be a might expensive upgrade if the A/D component was made better in the future (and it will be).

I also like to be able to send the mic output through a mic pre so I can hit the A/D device with a better signal.  Having the A/D built in means you now have to deal with the output as digital from the beginning and you lose the ability to boost that signal organically.  I guess that means you're down to using preamp modelers for any particular coloring you may want.

Yeah, I think I'd stay away unless there's a REALLY good reason that I'm not seeing.

I hope you enjoy your new mics. I expect they will allow you to experience a lot of new ideas about sound and how microphones respond to it.

I've owned some of my nicer mics for 25+ years.

I'm going to bet that a year from now you'll form an opinion regarding how affordable your new mics actually are and you'll enjoy them for years and years.

    Hi Craig,
Digitizing at the mic seems, to me, like a way to bypass all the magic that a great microphone pre amp imparts.

Idk, based on the SOS article, digital mics seem like a good thing. The whole AES stuff.

I don't know what I'm talking about but I see a lot of smart people nodding. RME for example.

Could be just a way to sell a bunch of new gear. idk.

    Thanks for posting!

Here's a informative white paper that promotes the benefits of digital mics:

That's what I'm thinking, but what do I know?

I just wanted to stop by and point out that my comment about the affordability of the mics was meant to suggest that I think using them for a year will confirm how valuable a nice pair of mics is and at that point the price will seem secondary to the usefulness. It occurred to me that my comment may have seemed to be a judgement about price when it was intended as a positive opinion about value.
