GM2 Sound Selection...

Hello all,

My question to everyone is:

How do you access GM2 sounds through the patch selection in the main view?  It will allow me to select the GM1 sounds, but not the GM2 sounds that my module is compatible with? Do I have to use a certain command such as a bank change command in the event view?

If this can not be done by selecting a patch in the main track view, what products does cakewalk have that will allow me to select gm1 or gm2 sounds through the main track panel with ease? If I can't do it through the main track window, can you tell me specifically through the event window using specific commands line by line to select the gm2 sound banks? I use the Roland XV-5050 sound module, and I am using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.

Thanks to everyone who can help me on this!

Mike

you normally can pick a patch and then a bank regardless of the unit.. BUT you might use a * of 128..

e.g. strings 7 (bank 11 , patch 49)

you might try entering them.. OR if that doesn't work.. change the bank to 11 * 128 = 1408

Do you have the .ins file for the 5050? Would make life a lot easier.

Do you have enough memory to have both loaded at the same time??

If not, then you have to have enough memory for the GM2 by itself and load those in place of the GM1 sounds.

And then again I am not sure if it will take two sounds at the same time.

view instructions, I guess.

Otherwise, you may have "bank 0" and "bank 1" and then you would pick bank 1 (GM2 sounds probably while bank0 is GM1) and pick the patch you want to use in another list.

To access the GM2 sounds all you need to know is their bank and patch numbers, then send those messages from your controller. There'll be a MSB (CC#0) number and/or a LSB (CC#32) number to access the bank, the patches are via the patch change message.

Check the sound modules MIDI implementation chart, that should have the info, then check your controller manual for how to send the necessary.

EDIT: If you do have a bank number such as 11200 (which would show in a INS file for example) you can work out the bank change message MSB (cc#0) by taking away 64 and dividing by 128.

Example Roland Sonic Cell Bank A Grp bank number = 11200

To calculate Bank Change message MSB(cc#0) 11200-64=11136/128 = 87

So if I send a bank change cc#0 with a value of 87 from my controller to Sonic Cell, it switches to Bank A patch 1. Assuming I send it on a channel it is responding to of course.

Thanks to everyone for their help!  I now understand and after reading the midi implementation chart for the module I have, and using the information you all have given me,I have finally accessed the GM2 bank sounds!  Thanks again!  Great informative site!
