GPO/Aria Player in X1 - How to?
Hi there. I'm trying to get GPO to work in X1. I used GPO a lot on my last computer, but only recently upgraded it to where it uses the Aria Player instead of, I think it was the Kontakt Player. The Kontakt worked fine and I could always easily get sounds up and running and recording. For some reason, I can't seem to figure out how to make the Aria Player work in Sonar now. I have it so where if I load a sound into the player, I can point at the player keys with the mouse and they'll make noise as they should, but the sounds do not play from the MIDI on the track that the player is assigned to, and I can't seem to get my MIDI controller to control it, either. Anyway, if someone can please give me a step-by-step on how you're using the Aria Player successfully in Sonar X1, I'd really appreciate that. Thanks much! Eric

The numbered boxes refer to the channels so you have to match your channels to the box or vice versa. Also over on the right side under where it says mixer the CC that affect the instrument are shown here so that you know which controllers you can use with a particular instrument you have chosen.

Eric, there is a box on the left with GPO default programs.. if you load up one of them, it'll show you what it does with the other sections. and you just load up one of them if you want a quickstart.. and wait for the sounds to load in. the keyboard range is shown at the bottom IRC

The numbered boxes refer to the channels so you have to match your channels to the box or vice versa. On the Aria Player... yes, I have an instrument loaded in there and if I press on the keys on the player screen using the mouse it will play the sound, but it will not play or record any sound when I use my MIDI controller. Whereas, every other VST Synth (Dimension Pro, Pentagon, etc.) works just fine. Also over on the right side under where it says mixer the CC that affect the instrument are shown here so that you know which controllers you can use with a particular instrument you have chosen. "On the right side under where it says mixer"... I don't see that on the Aria player or in Sonar. Right side of what? Eric, there is a box on the left with GPO default programs.. if you load up one of them, it'll show you what it does with the other sections. Box on the left... of what?? Please be more specific, because I'm not seeing anything like that on the Aria player or in Sonar. and you just load up one of them if you want a quickstart.. and wait for the sounds to load in. the keyboard range is shown at the bottom IRC Do you mean where is says "ensemble"? If so, then yes, I can load all of that, and I can play the sounds within the Aria player... problem is that I can't get any sound into Sonar. My MIDI controller will work and Sonar will easily record every other synth, just not for this Aria player. Something isn't configured right in terms of the sound. Same thing if I have an existing MIDI file and try to patch the GPO sounds into it using the Aria player... nothing. If I touch the MIDI controller, the levels show activity in Sonar. I have the MIDI track IN set to my MIDI Controller and the OUT set to the Aria Player, and the AUDIO track has the Aria Out 1/Out 2 Stereo (or Out 1 mono). It will record the MIDI notes I'm pressing on the controller. But no sound comes into Sonar. I need a description of what settings you are using to load Aria player into Sonar, attach it to a track and to your MIDI controller, so it will produce sound in Sonar. Thanks!

In Sonar, have you got your channels for the Midi track selected to match the boxes in the Aria player and the Echo for that track turned on? I was referring to the Aria Player for where it says mixer.(Aria Player version 1.02) There are a number of different versions of the Player so that is perhaps where the confusion is. I just brought up an older version that just has 4 boxes so that may be what you are using. With the older version I had to rewind the project right to the start and hit play for it to take effect. I initially was getting the effect you described of being able to get sound on the player keyboard but not from the midi input. Once I did the play from the start it started working as expected.

Okay, I figured it out. I had to change the channel in the "C" dropdown under the FX bin in Sonar, not in the In/Out. Seems like a screwy place to have that, but anyway. It works now.

Nah, it's still weird. The channel I have selected there doesn't seem to correspond to the instrument that's loaded. Maaaan, GPO was so easy to use before in Sonar... This seems like a step backward to me, either with the Aria Player or X1 or both.

Aria and X1a work fine here. I'm confused about what "I had to change the channel in the "C" dropdown under the FX bin in Sonar, not in the In/Out" means. What "c"? Why FX bin? Try this Open new Sonar instance inserted aria from the insert menu-selected midi track and 1st audio track In the midi track I insert some random notes just to have something to hear I open aria screen and in track 1 install GPO flute In sonar Midi track output is set to omni , the default (just for this test) In sonar, Aria output is set to master (the default) Hit play and here my random midi track play the flute. I remember it took me a while to get Aria to play as well and I think it was in the MIDI setup in the mixer window of Aria. Aria has MIDI channel and output channel settings next to each instrument that need to be correct. Try OMNI for the Channel and 1/2 for the output. If that doesn't work try a different MIDI channel and/or a different output. Use the same settings for multi voiced instruments. Aria's got a Multi VST and that's where you can set up multiple instruments as above.

I've now got a similar problem that I thought was solved. I'm using the Multi Aria Player and have all audio tracks loaded. I can play the first instrument from the keyboard but all others ONLY play from Aria interface keyboard and NOT from my XV-88. I've set up the MIDI channels 1 - 16 and all outputs 1/2, 3/4, 4/5 etc. for each instrument. When I play from the Aria keyboard it also fires each different instrument, audio track as expected. It's acting like my Keyboard is only sending output 1/2. If I set up each instrument with OMNI as the MIDI I can play ALL the instruments at once and can then solo them with the mixer but it will still only output to the audio track with 1/2 as the inputs. I could have sworn I has this set up before but maybe I never got it working properly. At least I can get sound from the Aris but it's not working as it should. I hope that helps you somehow Grudunza

I just discovered that my XV-88 only sends one MIDI channel at a time or at least I can't find a way for it to send more than one at a time. If that's true then I'm done and will use MIDI omni with the solo and mute buttons in the mixer. May not be helping the OP but I hope just a little more knowledge will help.

OK Now I'm completely highjacking this thread and even found a thread I started a long time ago with this same topic - lol Here's another question. I searched for Aria Player on YouTube and found a few videos of how to set up the Player in multi timbral mode using competitor's products. When they were done, you could simply choose a track and it would play the instrument in GPO. I see no way to accomplish anything near that in X1 and to duplicate the same set up one would have to create an Audio track and MIDI track for each instrument and a separate instance of Aria for each set of tracks. Negating the purpose of Aria to play multiple instruments. I'm probably missing something and the last time I posted a similar thread it got very little response so maybe I and the OP are stuck with a non-behaving Aria Player but there must be many GPO users out there. How do you set your GPO stuff up?

Thanks, HumbleNoise, for alerting me via PM about this thread. All the needed info is on this thread, but it's jumbled, and not clear. Let me attempt to spell out the settings needed to get full multi-timbral usage out of Aria in X1. 1-- Insert Aria, asking for all audio tracks in the insert synth dialogue, and load with the instruments you want. 2-- Add 15 more MIDI channels, since Sonar will add all the audio channels for you, but still doesn't insert more than one MIDI track at a time. 3--Direct all MIDI tracks to the 16 separate MIDI channels in Aria: --------In the Inspector, towards the bottom of the left hand strip, choose Aria. --------In the Inspector, towards the top, under the FX bin, choose separate MIDI channels for each track, using the "C" button, as mentioned by Grudunza. 4--Set separate audio outs for each instrument slot in Aria. In the gray strip under each instrument's name, the 4th item from the left is where you choose the pair of stereo outs. There are 16 stereo pairs available in Aria, numbered 1/2 through 31/32. 5--Leave the Ins of the MIDI tracks to OMNI. 6--Leave your keyboard at the default of sending on MIDI channel 1. That is a master setting for all 16 tracks in the one instance of Aria - you don't change that. The MIDI channel which is actually played when you have focus on a given track is determined by the channel setting in step 3 above. NOTE: It keeps things less confusing if you leave the 16 MIDI channel assignments as they come up by default in Aria. That way each slot number corresponds to the channel number - AND it's also easiest if you simply assign the audio channels so they also correspond. So, for instance, the first instrument is #1, on MIDI channel 1, on stereo out 1. I don't think I've left anything out. Step through this at an un-rushed pace, and you'll have GPO working the way it should in X1. Randy B.

And make sure the mod wheel (or its CC lane data in Sonar) isn't at the bottom position else things will be mighty quiet. Grum.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply Randy et all. I can follow the instructions quite easily but in step 3 I don't see a 'C' button in the inspector and cannot direct a separate MIDI track to another MIDI channel. Is the 'C' button only visible if a setting in X1 is somehow activated? Whoa that's a pretty little 'C' but I've found it and will continue. Currently the only limitation I've come across is my controller will NOT send to multiple MIDI channels unless I dig 4 or layers deep into one of those old style Roland synth menu systems and even then I can never remember how to get back to the setting. I CAN set it up with MIDI Omni though and control the instruments from the Aria Mixer and AHA! from the Sonar mixer. I think the key is simply adding as many MIDI tracks as instruments but I would like to get it set up as above but no luck with the 'C' button..

Still only get it to work with MIDI OMNI which plays all instruments all the time unless I mute or Solo from the Aria mixer. Tried a thousand combinations. I guess what I'm looking for is to select a MIDI track and have the associated instruments play when that track is selected. But there's no information being transmitted from any MIDI channel except Channel 1 or OMNI. EDIT: HALLELUJAH Got it working. Not sure what I changed but I cloned tracks so the settings wouldn't change then just changed MIDI channels in the 'C' box. Wow that was a workout. Thanks for all the help. I hope the OP gets it working as well.

Howdy, Humble - I got your new PM, and I'm answering here in case it's useful to others. OK, so you found the window under the FX bin of the MIDI track inspector where you select the MIDI channels. Good, that's how you'll be triggering the various MIDI channels in Aria. Select a track, play, and you'll be working with the instrument you want. Look at step #6 in my previous post - I haven't changed the MIDI channel on my keyboard for years. Just leave it on One. The channel the data ends up on is set in the Inspector. And so yes, as in step #2 of my post, you need as many MIDI tracks as you have instruments--each on a different channel. Got it working now? Randy B.

Just wanted to say that as someone who has been banging his head against the wall that seems to be Aria running under Sonar X1, this thread has been invaluable and the thread has enabled me at last to set up different midi tracks controlling different instruments on the Aria. To me it seems that the absolutely key thing is setting the Channel number on the track inspector strips to "1: Aria Player VST _x64" or "2: Aria Player VST _x64", etc., to indicate which Channel in the Aria player you want that midi track in X1 to control. The Channel number on the track inspector is the dropdown menu just below the FX bin/window, near the top left of the screen, and it will normally initially show 'c none'. I didn't seem to have to set the channels on the Aria player itself to 'Omni', as other people on the thread seemed to have had to - the channel number in the Aria Player's channel number dropdowns seem to automatically set to 01, 02, 03, 04 etc when the Aria player is loaded, and this seems to work just fine as it is - as long as the channel numbers on the track inspector strips are changed as I've mentioned. I am still about confused about the difference between channels and tracks - the terms seem to be used almost interchangeably, which doesn't seem right... Anyway, I hope this is useful to someone! And thanks to all you helpful problem-solvers! DocH ps I posted this at the end of another similar thread, but meant to post it here...

Hi, HunaMan - I've been wondering how it's been going for you, ever since the other thread we had going ended. Glad you finally have Aria and Sonar working together to get you multi-timbral playback. - You're of course absolutely right that it's imperative that you set the MIDI channel in all of your Sonar MIDI tracks. The Audio tracks will be set up for you automatically, if you ask for that to happen when you insert Aria, but that dialogue only gives you the first MIDI track. You need to insert the other 15 MIDI tracks, and then direct each of them to different MIDI channels - I just looked at my post #14 on this thread, and it outlines things fairly well. You're also correct that be default, Aria will automatically number its 16 instrument slots with MIDI channels 1 through 16. Maybe some people, in a desperation to get things working, start clicking everything in sight, and end up with "OM" (Omni) as a choice instead of a discrete channel. But there was also discussion on this thread about the MIDI tracks in Sonar best being set to receive Omni, and then it's the individual instrument channels that need to be selected. Sorry these steps weren't clear to you in the other thread - I remember us trying to straighten all this info out. The difference between channels and tracks: --Aria, like any other multi-timbral (can play more than one instrument at a time) sampler/synth, has a total of 16 MIDI channels. The MIDI spec as created by its developers has 16 channels. --The most common analogy for what a MIDI channel is has always been either a radio or TV-Those devices can be tuned to separate channels which have different programs playing on them. --Each soft synth you use in a project has its own discrete system of 16 channels. So your first instance of Aria has 16 channels. Insert a second instance of Aria, it will have its own system of 16 channels, totally separate from those in the separate instance - The two Arias don't communicate with each other, each is discrete. --Channels are what we work with in Sonar. There are audio tracks - fairly self explanatory. MIDI tracks are basically the same, except they are hooked up to synths - as per everything in the early part of this post. Those MIDI tracks can be set to any specific channel on any specific synth - but what those tracks are hooked up to has to be set up also or no communication will happen. You have an Aria instance with instruments loaded for all 16 channels - now you need Tracks in Sonar to be connected to them. Hope you're happily making music, Doc! Randy B.

rbowser Thanks, HumbleNoise, for alerting me via PM about this thread. Randy B. This is an awesome post. Yes, the only thing you left out was "Now save this as a track template." I've bookmarked this thread, because I'm about to install GPO/ARIA in X1! BTW, would I be biting off too much trying to run this in Win7 x64 / Sonar x64?

Hi RBowser, thanks for your post. Hi Losguy - you ask whether it would be too much to ask Win7 x64 and Sonar x64 to run GPO/Aria. I happen to have pretty much this setup, in fact it's Sonar X1 (64) with the 2 upgrades to X1b, running with GPO4, under Win 7, and it all seems to work fine. I wish you good luck anyway! DocH
