Bill, That would be entertaining. But likely it would be the mis-understanding between UK English and American English that would cause the ruckus and soon would result in a brawl.

And in the end we would all look back at it and have a good laugh.

Wait till you line up against the Paki's and the Indians Doc!

And they don't laugh!

Strummy's Ashes Recipe:
  • Take one foot
  • Place it securely in mouth
  • Take 1 egg
  • Place it on face

Whoops!

I don't know about my bowling Bill, but I reckon I could have batted better than our lot this time round

I trust you'll have the good colonial decency not to post any pics (er.... like I did) to rub salt in the wound Bill!

Perhaps Strummy you'd care to explain to Doc (who does seem to be getting a little intrigued by cricket) what the following result means...

England 102 all out & 263 all out; Australia 445
Australia won by an innings and 80 runs

[s****]

OH NO!!!

No problem Bill - Doc, it means the Aussies were extremely lucky.

On a serious note though Bill (and thanks for going easy on me!) your bowlers were good but our mob were just pathetic. They all seemed to have the 'rabbits in the headlights look about about them.

Almost to a man the footwork was poor at best and non-existent at worse - your guys bowled intelligently (a la Glenn McGrath/Terry Alderman) and exposed the weakness time after time - god knows how many you'd havbe stuffed us by if Brett Lee had been fit!

Last I checked Strummy, us Colonials don't get lucky when we defeat someone. As a matter of course its usually a sound defeat we deal out. Now, stiff upper lip, mate, lest you emabarrass us all.

Ten of the best sledges (from TV channel Dave)

10: Fred Trueman vs. Raman Subba Row
  • Row (after having the ball hit through his legs): "I should've kept my legs together, Fred."
  • Trueman: "So should your mother."

9: Daryll Cullinan vs. Shane Warne
  • Warne: "I've been waiting two years to humiliate you again."
  • Cullinan: "Looks like you spent it eating."

8: Shane Warne and Ian Healy vs. Arjuna Ranatunga

Shane Warne asks the slightly overweight batsman Ranatunga what it would take to tempt him out of his crease.
  • Healy: "Put a Mars Bar on a good length. That should do it."

7: Steve Waugh and Ian Healey vs Nasser Hussain

Waugh tells Ricky Ponting to field at silly point as Hussain is batting.
  • Waugh: "I want you right under his nose."
  • Healey: "That would be anywhere inside a three-mile radius."

6: Merv Hughes vs. Robin Smith
  • Merv: "Does your husband play cricket as well?"

5: Merv Hughes vs. Javed Miandad
  • Miandad: "You look like a fat bus conductor."
  • Hughes (after bowling him on the next ball): "Tickets please!"

4: Merv Hughes vs. Viv Richards
  • Richards: "This is my island, my culture. Don't you be staring at me. In my culture we just bowl."
  • Hughes (After taking his wicket a few balls later): "In my culture we just say f*** off."

3: Robin Smith vs. Merv Hughes
  • Hughes (after Smith had played and missed): "You can't f***ing bat".
  • Smith (after he reached the boundary): "Hey Merv, we make a fine pair. I can't f***ing bat & you can't f***ing bowl."

2: Glenn McGrath vs. Eddo Brandes

Two versions of this have gone down in history. Either way it works though!
  • McGrath: "Hey Eddo, why are you so F***ing Fat?"
  • Brandes: "Because every time I shag your (version a) mother (or, version b) wife, she gives me a biscuit."

1: Rodney Marsh vs. Ian Botham
  • Rodney Marsh: "So how's your wife…and my kids?"
  • Ian Botham: "The wife's fine, but the kids are ****ed."

Top 10 Best Sledges...

Oh dear, Aussies do seem to be a little "over-represented" on that list.

But seriously, how could this one not have made the top-ten?

Jacob Ormand had just come out to bat on an Ashes tour and was greeted by Mark Waugh.
MW: **** me, look who it is. Mate, what are you doing out here? There's no way you're good enough to play for England."
JO: "Maybe not, but at least I'm the best player in my family."

Sorry Strummy, you're right of course.....

I was going to argue that you started it....

[Exhibit A]

Sheesh - you seem to be in more of a state than your bloody cricket team

But then I thought "show the guy some compassion, how often does he get a chance to crow about his country's sporting achievements, something we take for granted as an almost daily event here".

Aussies know how to gracious in victory, god knows we've had enough practice. And what's the point of kicking the Poms when they're down, in the end you're just going to get a sore toe.

I put it down to the long cold winter we're having - the mercury nearly dipped below 20ºC today -Brrrrrrrrrr.

So once again - my apologies.

Well after the Baseball strike in '94, Baseball has come off my list of sports to watch or go to games of. I only go to the minor league games anymore and very rarely that as the minor league is an extension of the pro league.

When a group of athletes goes to strike when they are paid well to begin with and hold the fans hostage (the owners weren't really affected) is complete garbage. They won't and never will get my support or respect and will forever be held in disdain by me. Just as certain American Football club owners like Al Davis who worries more about his pocket book than his fan base in a particular city.

Ok. I'm done. I'll get off my soap box.

He he - I don't do smug Bill - a hint of gloat maybe, but never smug!

I bought myself the ESPN 'Legends of Cricket' 6-DVD Box-set recently - I found it on offer for just six pound something.

I mention this because last night I watched some of the Australia DVD - the bits on The Don and Keith Miller and my boyhood hero, Dennis Lillee.

In my lifetime being in love with the game both as a player and (mostly a TV) spectator, two fast bowlers really stand head and shoulders for me above the rest - and there have been some decent quickies since about 1970 when my interest started.

The first is Dennis, I wonder if you agree with me?

And can you guess my other choice!

HINT? A hint of gloat?! I suppose Hiroshima was a "hint" of a bang?

I'll need a clue Strummy - what country did he play for? (Or does Botham qualify as a pace bowler? Certainly in his earlier career?) I always liked Fred Trueman.
