G&L MFD and Alnico pickups compared

When I purchased the G&L ASAT Classic Limited Edition natural Ash body on the MF SDOTD a couple of days ago, I noticed that it comes with G&L's Alnico pups instead of the G&L MFD (Magnetic Field Design) pups that ship on all of the current Tribute ASAT Classics. So, I went searching, and easily found the following interesting video from G&L on exactly the question I had. All I can say is that the video leaves me with YAG (Yet Another Guitar) GAS.

    Thanks for posting this.
I'd never really known the difference between those two pickups.  Now I know that I'll be shopping for an Alnico version.

Cool. I have a G&L Tribute too. It's a Tele with a hollow upper bout. The Pups are single coil and I guess the MFD looking at the video.
I was in a Rock band and needed more overdrive and was looking for some humbuckers to swap out. They are a weird size so it was difficult. I ended up with a set from GFI pups. I had them in there for a year and slowly started hating the sound. I just put the originals back in and what a huge difference. It sounds more like a classic Tele again.  So because of the weird size there seems to be not much you can do for improvement. But it's a great Tele type guitar and I have no problem with that. I will leave it alone and seek out a guitar that comes with Humbuckers this time.  I also have a real good Strat copy with Fender custom shop Pups that is a great guitar. So all I'm missing is a SG/ Les Paul style axe.
I've owned a few versions of both of those and the necks are wrong for me. I need a Tele with 2 humbuckers.

I know Seymour Duncan makes stacked humbucking pickups for the bridge position on a Tele.  I'd assume they have a neck version too.

And if you're looking to buy another (always a good plan), the Fender Telecaster Deluxe has always had 2 Fender HB's:  http://shop.fender.com/en/intl/0113082721.html#prefn1=refinement-body-shape&prefv1=Telecaster&cgidx=electric-guitars&start=1.

I played in a Band years ago and the singer had that same Tele, it was from the late 60's I think and he wouldn't let me buy it!! Bastard.. It was white. Notice how they used Gibson styled knobs but happily only the 2. One thing I don't get along with is a Gibson 4 pots and placement of toggle. Tele's have it perfect for me. And I cut my knuckles on Strat volume knobs, I have to remove the closest one.

I would love to get that model, They still sell them but the few I have found were crap made in China models. I know I'll find one someday I just need to oreder on line which I hate to do.
PS You can't use the stacked single coils as the G&L pups are more of a soapbar size. Smaller that a PAF and bigger than a Strat PU.

The Duncan stacked pickups are one of many attempts to create a noiseless pickup with single-coil output levels that still sounds like a vintage single-coil one. DiMarzio make them, Fender make them and Kinman makes them. I've not tried Kinmans or DiMarzio but the Duncans and Fenders don't really nail the classic Tele sound and feel for me. The Fender 'vintage noiseless' are especially bad.

For a 'real humbucker' sound from a Tele with standard size routes and the steel plate bridge Duncan make a mini PAF type and a few others. DiMarzio's Chopper and Hot Rails are worth a look. As are Fender Texas Specials, though being high-output single coils they can get noisy. I've a Tele with a Texas Special in the bridge and a Duncan Jazz 'bucker in the neck and the outputs of the pickups balance pretty well. Though I will admit to preferring more vintage sounding pickups - they're what makes 'that sound'.

I've got a Texas Special in one of mine, and don't notice any noise...

Try using a Fuzz Face with it near a computer....

Or in a building with rubbish light dimmers.

The Texas Special isn't as noisy as a P90, but any powerful single coil is prone to noise. Unless it's a Lace Sensor which are much more resistant to RFI/EMI.
