Garritan Personal Orchestra 4

I am looking for a good strings plug in and am thinking of buyting the Garritan Personal Orchestra 4.  It seems reasonably priced and has decent reviews.  Would anyone care to comment of their experience with the software and if there may be better choices available in that price range.

I saw a previous post about the different ones available but the posts were from 2008 so I thought I'd see if the opnions were the same.

Thanks.

I am proud to say, I bought GPO4 through the Cake site. The actual transaction was harder than the installation. The install was BUTTAH! Grab this NOW! It is a wonderful bargain. The quality is fantastic. But, don't expect it to be the end-all orchestral plugin. It is very hard to beat some of the larger libraries out there. FWIW, There is a little work involved to try to mimic a real orchestra, but, I highly recommend GPO4! I have had no issues with X1 at all. The only thing to be aware of is when you start a new project, everytime, you must make sure that Zero All Conrollers at Start is unchecked in the preferences. I could not figure out why when I loaded GPO, it generated sound. As soon as I stopped or paused playback, NO MORE SOUND! That was the problem. Once it is unchecked, everytime that project loads it will be fine. ENJOY!

Are you talking about the one that comes with Dimension LE for $50?  I was hoping to get a stand alone version so I can use it elsewhere as well.

Thanks for the comments...I appreciate it very much.

if you have x1 you can get it cheap here - http://www.store.cakewalk...ductid=36-GTEP4.00-20E otherwise it's $169...

don't rule out miroslav philharmonic either, it's the other contender at this price: audiomidi have the full (7gb) version on sale at $99 - http://www.audiomidi.com/...hilharmonik-P8352.aspx

You might also want to consider getting the Miroslav Philharmonik Orchestra which is on a Group Buy sale going on at Esoundz. On top of the included 7+ gigs of sounds, the group buy has reached tier 3 (you get 3 free additional libraries for the Sample Tank synth...which is also free and has quite a bit of included sounds). Tier 4 needs about another 70 people to join and then it's a 4 for 1 deal. The sale is good until May 31 and this is going for $89 (with the coupon).

The sounds are quite good (I have the LE version) and with the included Fx, these fit in very well in the mix. There's also a bunch of vocals/choirs included. I'm actually planning on getting the full version as there's a lot of good quality samples I just can't pass up with this group buy.
Check out the thread at the KVR site as there's a lot of good tips and info being discussed about this:
    http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=314976&sid=8185aad63fa7bd0fa8d59e77cab1c213

If you do jump in this deal and you're ready to buy, there's an option to include the name of a referal....mine is MESH. When you do this, we both get bonus epointz for future purchases...it's a win-win situation.

    Good luck!!

No prob Dave....Let me know your Esounds name & I'll do the same.

Although that thread at KVR is about 42 pages, there's a wealth of info there(from Torgo) on using the various synths (especially Sample Tank) which I'd like to archive into a PDF.

For the money, GPO is a good deal, sounds good too, and right now, Cake has a 20% off everything sale.

It is a nice string library in it's price range. there are better sounding strings but expect to pay more for them.

Is the one that Cake has for 20% the one that works with Dimension Pro?  Could it be used in other programs like Presonus Studio One of Garageband?

No. it isn'i as high end as a lot of your expensive ones, but, for the money it is the best buy you will ever make. I have the Miroslav and hands down the quality in Garritan is much better. Even though, the Miroslav has more articulations.

GPO is good for the money but I found it hard to make sound good.  It takes some serious midi chops.

Miroslav is good, great even, but it has a particular character that might not be useful for every project, though I love it's woodwinds and at times it's brass is exactly what I need.
GPO4 is more "generic" (and I certainly don't mean that in a bad way) and will lend itself to a broader selection of projects. I have all the major orchestral libraries and I can honestly say that GPO4 never ceases to amaze me for it's price. Actually I hesitate to say that because GPO4 is great regardless of price!

Definitely worth it, especially at the sale price.

A nice companion item is the Groove3 Midi Orchestration tutorial vid, on sale through this weekend:

    DIM/LE & GPO  >>>> http://www.store.cakewalk...ductid=10-DMLE1.00-20E

with the TAKE20 sale.... you're looking about $40... a really good price for all that you get....DimLe and GPO in the same package.

This is the one I bought some time back .... BTW, you should look into the store every so often. Cake runs unbelievable deals in there from time to time and really doesn't bother to tell anyone. I think they just want to see who checks the store for the specials.....BECAUSE... when I found it, they had marked it down to $20 complete!!!!! Needless to say I didn't wait to order it the next day, I placed the order right then and there.

You gotta check in the store and from time to time..... people who spot these deals will post an announcement in the SOFTWARE forum, which, IIRC, is what I did.

Also, in the software forum you get announcements of other cool deals.... for example, I happened to see, and subsequently picked up a FREE copy of a limited, but highly useful version of East West instruments..... it was removed about a week after I got it.

Stay on your toes and keep your eyes open, and be ready to jump on the right deals when you see them.

If I'm not mistaken, the "pocket Orchestra" is a cut down version of GPO - not the standard one.

In fact, some of us already got that bundle free with a version of Sonar (Don't remember which, since I never bothered to look at Dim LE, having the full Dim Pro, and not being interested in a junior version of GPO).

However -- $79 sale along with 20% off for the full GPO... I may finally jump on that package.

I'm still trying to determine if I can order the GPO "Elite" pack ($79) if I don't own the current version of Sonar.  Will it work with other programs as well or is it only designed to work with Sonar?  I'd like to use it as a standalone or with GarageBand as well.

    Thanks.

It's not "tied" to Sonar, if that's what you're asking.  You get the same full version that's sold in retail outlets or Garritan's site.  Not sure about standalone...  For details I'd suggest consulting the GPO website.

As far as the special price, I'm afraid that's for X1 owners only.  Cheapest I've seen it elsewhere is $139 on Ebay with free shipping.

Kurry, it will work since it is a VST... you can load it into any DAW that supports VST's.

I can only comment on the full GPO... I started with V1 and upgraded each time. I still have GPO4 installed, but I don't use it as much as I used to, I've been slowly upgrading my orchestral libraries<G>!

However, if this is your first orchestral library I think GPO4 is an excellent choice...
    1) it's small, you don't have 100 articulations to choose from, just the basics, and that saves you a lot of time as you are learning to orchestrate and/or arrange.
    2) it is playable - in fact it is designed to be played. Most of the big guns now focus on playability now too, so the distinction isn't as great, but I still think this is important.
    3) it covers most of the instruments you'll need. When you need more extravagant stuff you'll buy it.
    4) it can sound really good, but yes, you will need to learn how to tweak things, either in realtime or post, to get the most out of it. But that's not an all bad thing!

I have no regrets about the investments I've made in Garritan products. They hit a rough patch a couple years ago, but they seem to be back on track, and the support is top notch.

my two cents, worth exactly that!

Miroslav Philharmonik  is really good. They are planning to upgrade the software as well. My guess would be 64bit. GPO is good also. It came with Finale and I like it for what it is.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.
