Its very sad Steve. His agent, if he was really looking out for him, should never have let him on the stage in the first place. But then, he is an agent ......

He is a larger than life character. I will never forget the Raoul Moat standoff where Gazza drunkenly called a radio station and said he was on his way with a dressing gown, a six pack and a couple of fishing rods. And he was...the police wouldn't let him anywhere near the guy though. Hope he gets better, he is a British institution. It must be very hard when one grows too old to exercise one's genius. A lot of mental illness and substance abuse among retired sportsmen.

It seems particular sad that those closest to him seem to have abandoned him to his fate.

As I soon as I saw what it was, I didn't watch the video as I think this is exactly the sort of thing he really doesn't need and The Scum in particular are more than a little responsible for his current state because of the way they like to build people up and up as heroes and then can't wait to start taking the pot shots that will bring them crashing down again.

Such a shame - although many of his problems are self-inflicted I have always felt a little sorry for him and can't help but like the guy because underneath it all there seems to be just a regular guy who has been constantly and publicly slaughtered every time he makes the kind of mistake that many "ordinary" people do every day. Not saying he's blameless, but when most people mess up it's not paraded for all to see. When that person is somewhat insecure in the first place, it's only going to have one effect.

It's a tragic illness that uses up any good feeling people can possibly give toward helping you.

The only alternative left for any normal sane thinking person is to turn their back and hope he decides he is bad enough and starts to seek help himself.

He will have already worn many out to the point they can't give him any more.  There is an answer but HE has to want it above anything else.  That is the point that he will find real help rather than people who may just be helping enable his habit by being well-intentioned but oblivious to the true nature of the 'illness' of alcholism.

The really sad thing is that many so afflicted die before they can admit they have a problem that is 'bad enough' to do something about, even more tragically many can carry on living in the nightmare for a very long time.

No doubt, it's a safeguard to protect those innocently unaware of the UK's lowest common denominator populist rag, The Sun newspaper.

It's sales are based on the idea of making normal people feel superior to the similarly normal people they like to portray having meltdowns.

Oh, and a few gratituitous boobie pictures thrown in helps the circulation figures too.

There are a few more insidious diseases than the one Gazza has, and working for an organization such as that and passing it off as public interest is probably one of those.

Like Mitch Hedberg said, alcoholism is the only illness people can get mad at you for having:

    "Dammit Otto, you're an alcoholic"
    "Dammit Otto, you have lupus"

Second one doesn't sound quite right!

I see Chris Evans is one of the 'celebs' paying for Gazza to go into re-hab in the US. Oh, the irony...

+ several million. The Sun has a lot to answer for, and I sincerely hope that in light of the latest Hillsborough inquiry/inquest, that RAT Kelvin Mackenzie is nailed up as a result

The fact that the Sun circulates at all is a sad, sad thing.

And I have to agree that everything that Jonbouy says here is bang on, in my opinion. I have known just two real alcoholics so far, on a personal level, and it is soul destroying, for all concerned.
