Generic wisdom tidbits?

This is a bit like Skylightron's thread, only I'm suggesting it doesn't need to be Sonar specific.
Just one liner, short bits of Recording and Mixing Engineers' wisdoms such as:
1.Fix it in the take, don't be tempted to say "That's good enough I'll fix it in the mix".
2.Keep it Simple- EG don't add something if it doesn't improve it.
3. Don't mix in (even good) headphones, Get good monitors.
4. Compare similar commercial works to your mix.
5. Don't mix at loud levels. Your ears get tired and don't hear everything.
6. Take a break from the mix. Even several days.
7. EQ- Boost to sound different, cut for clarity.
8. Back off the reverb until you can't quite hear it.
9. Listen to the mix from another room.
10.Listen to the mix in the car and other environs.
11. Fix your room's sound.

That's a pretty good start right there! Add a few more of those and we'll be able to simply link to this thread in response to most future posts. I'll add a few off the top of my head, in no particular order:

    12. EQ-matching is a gimmick you don't need
    13. Know your tools: every plugin you own already does something you don't know about
    14. Anything that makes your mix sound better also has the potential to destroy it if taken to an extreme
    15. Mono-compatibility is still important
    16. If equalization on the master bus requires more than 3 nodes or more than 3db adjustment, it's not ready for mastering - go back into the mix
    17. Spend more time getting the midrange right than on the bass or highs
    18. Use the K-system; if you can't figure it out that's OK - come up with your own system for finding consistency
    19. Buying a new compressor will not bring you the breakthrough you seek. Ever.
    20. Get your speakers as far from walls as possible and put them on sturdy stands
    21. Spend as much time as possible listening to reference music on your studio monitors

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    22. Get a subwoofer. Even a cheap computer type will expose low end problems.
