Genesis Cover

My cover version of the 1980 Genesis tune "Turn It On Again". Done in Sonar X3 in my home studio.
Enjoy!

    Mark,

Nice cover, you did a great job throughout.   Actually started a cover of this song a few weeks back so will put it back on the burner for awhile;)     Your vocals are really good, including the harmonies at the end.   I might only add some Collins effects to the vocals to add a little dimension but they are sung very well...  Really like it..

quite nice.  I was lucky enough to see them play this for 250 people at the Roxy, in January 1980, and I got to have dinner with the band and crew there, followed by seeing them the next night from up on the left side of the stage at the Greek to a sold out show, followed by the 'after party'.  Mike Rutherford was super happy to have gotten one of the brand new digital guitar tuners, and he had his 5-year old daughter with him on the tour.  Super fun.

Very nice job on the tune - brought back all the memories instantly for me.  I went and listened to a bunch of your other tunes too, and LOVE your voice.

Yet, another gem!  You often make me like these songs better than the original.  I wish all artists that do covers would listen to your repertoire to get a feel for doing great covers.  That being said, I loved the original song you posted earlier, too.

    Thanks everyone!
Robert I have some friends that would be very envious of your story. They are absolute Genesis fanatics! Some even played in Genesis tribute bands,
What an amazing opportunity. You saw them right before they really mega big with ABACAB and the 1983 self-titled Genesis album. I was in Europe when that one came out and I had never seen an album dominate the airwaves like that! So many hits. Sadly I have never seen them live. I will have to settle for the DVD concerts!

Yeah this is solid.  Your voice is very much in the Phil Collins vein, who is one of the great prog vocalists natch.  I agree with the earlier comment -- you might want to increase the reverb a bit if you want to mirror the original recording.  Listening to some of your other stuff as well -- great execution and great song selection.

    Mark,

Checked this cover again after listening to your original "This Mystery"  You are obviously a good guitar player as evidenced by your original song recently posted.   Wondering why you didn't include the Turn It On Again guitar part.  The live version guitar part would sound really awesome in this cover.   The cover is good but I think your guitar playing would take it over the top.

    Good cover

I must admit that I never got into Genesis during their "early" phase.

I really liked "Follow You Follow Me" for some reason, and I therefore bought that album. But Duke just didn't gel with me. I'm not much of a Phil Collins fan to be honest, although he has done some great stuff.

    Thank you everyone!
Markno..I layered in a very blended guitar part that complements the synth...I only did this after seeing a video on playing the guitar. I didn't even know it was there...

As for reverb, I tried to stay away from that 80's Gated drum sound. Sadly I don't have any drum software that sounds as big and loud as Phil Collins'.

Recording digitally, as opposed to tape, IMO leaves a lot of sonic space open to fill. That's the trade off when covering the big sounds on the older recordings. I think today's producers are using compression to beef things up...thoughts?

Yep, you nailed it without trying "clone" the original. Strong, pro-sounding vocals, good choices on the synth sounds. Nice to hear a top notch cover now and then. I'm going to go and listen to some of your other stuff..Keep 'em comin'............Ron
