The downside is that after 6 months your account will be frozen until you upgrade to the 20gb package.

Well I registered with Gobbler last night and only got 5 gigs of space. I tried to connect up with Gobbler using the Gobbler icon in X3's control bar and got a message that I had to log in to Gobbler before X3 could connect to it...?????? I am logged in ??? It's starting to look like a feature that doesn't work right. It's not a big deal to me as I have 7 gigs of free space on Microsoft's Sky Drive that's totally free and I never use anyhow....

Gobbler looks really awesome.  5 gigs of backup for free!  Now you don't have to worry about your backup harddrive failing.  What's also really cool is the sending and receiving files of any size, which is more than awesome for those of us who collaborate over the net a lot.

It is hard to argue with "free" stuff, but this is hardly a feature I would have asked for in a DAW, or in an office suite for that matter. I hope that whatever programming went into integrating this with Sonar is truly trivial, and/or that Gobbler did the work.

Anyone who thinks that free online storage is revolutionary has been sleeping through the last decade worth of startups and teaser rates, and failures that left people scrambling to salvage their data. This stuff is so cheap that it is worth it to the providers just to get your email address to sell to somebody, or to pump their numbers so they can extract the next loan from the investment group.

I think it is great myself.
The only problem I am having is that I can't redeem the code (for the free 6 months) that is in my Cake account.
It tells me that the code is invalid because it is either already used or has to be used when starting a new account.

Check out A-Drive - you get 50GB of online storage with their free account.

The only restriction compared to the cheapest paid account is a 2GB single file maximum (compared to 16GB), and a capcha when you sign in.

Plus you can easily share files with others - simply enter their email address and A-Drive sends them a link for them to download the file from.

Honestly, the only reason I'm signing up for Gobbler is because it's there. I typically don't use cloud storage apart from Skydrive which I have 25gigs on because I'm an Office 365 subscriber. If I ever have files to transfer to someone, I use my own webserver to do it since it's fast.

So... I want it, but it's pricey.

The first project I'm backing up to Gobbler exceeds 5 GB.

Curious about how much space I could use, I selected from my Projects folder projects since June and it adds up to 161 GB. This puts me in the $300 a year category pretty easily.

I'm looking at more cost than I spend on software in a year to keep my current stuff backed up.

I love the idea of making it easy to share projects. I also like the idea of a computer automated backup system that runs in the background and backs up off-site.

I'm afraid of getting hooked on the free samples from the guy on the corner.

I think this will work well for sharing projects over distance.

I can't afford it currently as a long term backup system. I selected just my mixed-down tracks for the last few years and it's over 100 GB.

I'm guessing that the rest of you are in much worse shape than me. I have a day job.

I've been using Gobbler since it was released for Windows... and I am really pleased that they have integrated it into X3, although it will be a few days till I know exactly what this means.

Gobbler is NOT A-Drive or Dropbox or Sugarsync or any of the other cloud storage solutions. It is designed from the ground up for audio and video production. Granted, from the ground up meant PT, but that's to be expected. Now they are branching out to other platforms... this is good!

I am sure not everyone will want this feature, but I'm not entirely certain everyone (except maybe a hobbyist that does not keep any of their work) doesn't need it. Off site storage is great, off site storage geared towards music makers is even better.

    Really, go check it out!

Now that we're talking about paying for off-site storage for the projects as they are, what about storing the WAV files as FLACs or SHNs or some other compressed lossless format?

Is that a discussion worth having? How much extra processing goes into de-compressing WAV files as the first step for your DAW? Could we read and write FLACs by default and consequently have less to store off-site?

I know that this would have to be optional. I'm just wondering if it is ever discussed.

Gobbler compresses the files before backup so this is not an issue.

The nice thing about gobbler integration is that if you backup your cwp file it includes all audio files automatically. Deletr the project folder on your pc and restore from gobbler and everything comes back. No more two or three step process. Almost as easy as backing up a reason ptoject. ;)

I don't think many think of online storage services as something new and revolutionary. I've lost count of all online storage accounts I have. But I don't think many have seen the function of backing up a project to an online storage account with the press of a button before. If so, where? It would be nice to see how others have implemented this.

I don't understand how you can see backing up some of the most important stuff in your life with the press of a button as something "trivial"...? =/

I'd really like this function in Sonar to develope even further, to include other online storage services as well though. I myself didn't know about Gobbler before just now. I have 200Gb of storage on dropbox though and I'm sure others have accounts with lots of space elsewhere too.
I think it's an awesome feature, but I'd love to see the limitation of using Gobbler removed.
