Get out of my Nightmare

Since this is the month of pumpkins and ghouls and goblins, I present a piece that might fit.

Here it is

http://www.box.net/shared/mrdgher9s5

The Piano is played live thru The Garratin Authorized Steinway Piano and the Flute, Violin and Cello are from GPO.

This is not my best piece ever by any means, but it is my latest. I did the piano 2 nights ago and the rest was filled in tonight.

Comments welcome

Ron

    Hey Ron,

This song kept me off balance - I never knew what was coming next.

The overall mood of it definitely gave me a feeling of unease.

The mix is not balanced, but I think that's what you were going for on this one, and it's a loud mix (there were bits of distortion a few times on my rig). Some of the instruments sounded like they were in my apartment.

    Cheers,
    Doug

To me, there just seems to be alot of randomness. Obviously, this is on purpose, but I think even randomness needs to have some order to it, and that may be lacking here.

I think this piece represents exactly what you were trying to achieve Ron. Sounds popping in & out, darting about, suspense, shadows and things that go bump in the night. "Creatures of the night...what beautiful music they make"... Works for me!!

Not as random as my nightmares fer sure.

Love the title and the piece does suit it.

I like the fact that you've cut loose here with the piano and it's probably been a refreshing break for you too from some of the more disciplined and involved pieces that you do.

    I enjoyed it.

Hey rols, this was a real treat. I love tempo rubato stuff like this because, like many cellists (and some drummers ), I have major problems with metronomes. When you do something like this, do you use a click at all, or do you just feel your way through the whole thing?

    Hi Ron

Great production on this - I think it fulfils it's objectives and creates suspense and unease all the way through - the high register keys in particular, really work well throughout the piece.

    I found it quite haunting

Spot on atmospherics, particularly liked the contrast of the very lyrical bits scattered against the evocative dissonances and the varied rhythmic flow/accents. It all combines for a nicely effective emotional impact. I also enjoyed the production values use in heightening the impact. Rather cinematic. Well done and I really enjoyed it.

nice job Ron. I halfway expected to hear an Alice Cooper-esque song with that title :)

I am amazed and impressed by people who can compose at this level. I cannot even conceive of putting together something this intricate or guide it through the myriad of changes as you have done here.

Nice work on the piano, of course. That flute sounds especially nice too. Sounds like a perfect for Halloween or nightmares.

Good work. Liked the piano/flute interplay - this could be the backdrop to Alien 5 if it ever gets made.

Sounds like I just popped into a Hitchcock movie set.

Very cool. Agree this has a Hitchcock/50's movie track feel to it.

    The flute sounds really nice.

It would be a nice track to have looping and playing in the other room when the little ghoolies come a knocking....

many years back I taped a piece if string to a key on my yamaha dx-27s. The string was dark in color so it was hard to see and it triggered a "spacy ghost" kind of sound. The 27s was in the room above with the string run up the stairway and to the 27s. When kids were getting thier bags filled...we could pull the string and trigger the sounds.....it was kinda funny to see the looks on some of the faces (those w/o masks) .... kinda tacky but fun...and it worked.

    GUys

This has been a bad week for me, so I apologize for not gewtting back here sooner. Today I have 2 papers to write and hopefully during my quick breaks I can get a chance to listen to your music and return the favor.

    Doug and Jeff

I thought I was being a bit too repetitive in this...I guess not from your views.

    Larry and Jon

    Thanks guys.

LIke I said, not my best piece for sure, but a very welcome break from the intensity and workload required of a more standard piece.

    Spaceduck

I do something like this about once a month just for fun. I start at the piano and let it go from there. The first thing I always do is shut of the "Clicker". Very astute of you to notice! In a more regular piece for me, I usually start out with a metronome, then get rid of it as the piece progresses.

    Steve, Rodney and Tom

A few times in the past, I have had my muse tell me the name of a piece was Welcome to my Nightmare, but for the obvious reasons, found other titles for the works. This one was another example of this. Thanks guys!

    Janet

I think you can tell by now, that my piano playing is very different from yours. That's what happens when you have no formal training.

I do like to think I do better though, than your normal cat walking across the keyboard!

    Shad and Bristol

If you look real close, that's me in there at measure 57 getting on the bus! Just kidding of course. I always loved watching a good Hitchcock film on a Saturday afternoon.

    Guitar

I don't know if I enjoyed Halloween better as kid or as an adult. The rewards are very different, but great in their own way. I used to live with a witch as well, so Halloween was always special.

Thanks again guys, and as I said I will get to your music as well.

It made me uncomfortable, like I was doing for the mom's at the pool the other day... But that's what you were going for so bullseye.

Really unique peice you have here. Very outside the box type of tune that paints alot of pictures. Very chaotic at certain points but I hear a method in the madness at times. I wouldn't know where to begin with a peice like this but, I found it very interesting and ear opening.

Oh, infinitely better than a cat walking across the keys! Yes, your piano playing is different from mine--we're all different. I'm glad it's not a competition though! You may not have had formal training, but it's extremely hard to tell that by how well you play and compose. I have a feeling those 50 hours a week you played for a year didn't hurt your abilities any.

well not bad i got a feeling of unease too, kinda like everything didn`t mesh but in a way did,
also there were a few flute parts thet reminded me of shows when i was a kid i know the one
but couldn`t remember the other anyway one part reminded me of simon templar in The Saint.
