Getting Better & Better!! New original rock song "Switchblade Punk" best recording yet!

I haven't been on in a while as life is in a busy cycle so I know I haven't given much feed back on your songs lately  (I will try to this weekend!) but please check this out and let me know what you think!  I think I finally got a good guitar sound going, learned how to clean up the mix alot & have made vast drum sound improvements over the other recordings on my reverbnation account.   Anyhow, your thoughts are welcomed!

Are you using any mastering plug-ins on this?

The reason I ask is I just listened to Beagle's latest entry before I listened to this, remarkable difference in punch.  If you not using a mastering tool like Ozone, they are a must.

But aside from the reduced punch.  This sounded pretty well put together.  Not my type of music (and I hate when people say that) but it sounded pretty well balanced, except the lead guitar gets a little lost in the mix. But I heard some nice riffs in there.  I'm assuming you have the guitar DI through some sort of processor?

Well I haven't bought Ozone yet though after mixdown I did back through a separate session on my 8.5.3 producer and mastered it.  A little touch up on the eq, a bit of compression (nothing crazy),  a little reverb on the whole mix (very slight).   The guitars are both run our effects pedals, heads, 4x12 cabs and mic'd with a 57'.
yeah, I know the lead in the middle gets a little lost on the lower notes, I have already automated those low notes (where he starts those 2 runs) upward volumewise which helped alot actually, but they are still a little buried...  I am not screwing up a otherwise solid mix and starting over to repair that minor detail on a few notes as I already have it just under peaking.... so I decided on the "good enough for me" method on that one.
    Thanks Daryl!

    Hey, Chuck,

How's it going, man?  It's good to see you back on the forum.

You did a really dynamite job with this very cool sounding, modern punk rocker!  The song is well written, the playing by all the guys sounds nice and tight together, I really like the guitar tones during the tasty solos, and the vox and harmonies sound great.

After my fourth listen, just a minor suggestion.  I'm wondering if maybe the vocals might float a little better on top of the instrument mix if you pushed them up just slightly, maybe 1 or 1 1/2 dBs.  It might be worth trying, because I think it would give them a little more focus, particularly during the choruses.  If that doesn't do it, a small EQ notch on the vocal bus at around 500hz with a narrow Q might accomplish the same thing without actually changing the volume.  Of course, this is only a minor suggestion based on personal opinion, the song sounds really good as it is.

Very nice work, Chuck, I look forward to hearing your next one. Have a good one!
    Bob

Hey thanks Bob!  Thats great to hear from you as I like how your mixes tend to come out.  Yeah, my only issue is that the vocals are a little on the thin side...  the next one will be different.  This songs is up out and released & probably staying in its current form...    The next one will be done in a day or two and I got some new tools in the box to use on the drum tracks...  Can't wait!

I was careful here not to pump the vocals too far out front as I have in the past had that tendency.

Chuck, looks like we get to welcome you back with this rocker.  Good tune and a great feel to the track overall.  I have to agree with Bob on the vocals: they could have been a little more out front, though I tend to personally like vocals that way.

Other than that, I think you did a great job on this one.

Nice job on the song. Now, bring the vocals and lead guitar more to the front amd Give the overall mix a big volume boost.

Nice song in the punk style.  Agree with Daryl about need of some mastering plug-ins to give the track more punch.  As for singing, you have a great voice and quite appropriate for this genre.  Could I suggest that you scream in the chorus to give it more passion?

Thanks Everyone.... Wow the consensus is really strong here.  Maybe I should go back n' fix her up again?   Ok I'll have to do that.
VeChung: On this one I am playing rythem guitar and doing all the back vocals/harmonies.  I am not sure the guy who's out front for this one can scream much more than that?
This band has been such a blast so far,   I play mostly guitar & Bac vox, but also play bass, drums, lead vox too.  My singer is a phenominal drummer, my drummer is a great singer and really solid guitar player, my other guitarist can also play keys and trumpet, and my bassist was a guitarist most of his life til about 4 years ago!  SO WE GET TO LITERALLY PLAY MUSICAL CHAIRS ALL NIGHT AT EVERY GIG!  When we pic a new song to learn or even as we write original stuff it's like... Ok, who want's to play what on this one?  haha, so much fun.

Guys thanks a ton really!  On my last song I put up a couple months ago there was tons of stuff wrong with it:  Thin drums, tinny sounding guitars, booming bass guitars, screwed up strerio imaging, and a overall rough eq.   It's so cool that the only things I have gotten have been the vocals are a hair low, and so is the lead guitar track basically.  I can deal with that!   Looks like all the reading and countless hours/days spent at the console are starting to pay off a bit.  Thank you again.....

+1 on the needs more volume, crank the limiter on that bad boy. There's very little dynamic to save anyway. This type of music crys out for loud in your face. Give the mix the attitude the song has. It needs to punch your face in! With some tweaking you should be able to get alot more volume w/o it becoming distorted slop, just watch the essing and the potential for the fuzz on the guitar to shred eardrums, Cymbals are a good reference for when you think you've gone too far. I like the drums alot, played with feeling and not edited into lifelessness.

Nice one!  This has a great arrangement, performances are very good, the timing seems right on, and your vocals are great.  I love the early punk style BGV's.  I have to agree with the other comments above that it just needs a bit more punch up and your vocals need to be more out front.

If it were me, I'd raise the guitars about 1db.

Then I would master this. It sounds a bit dull (un-mastered)

Good song and great mix ('cept those guitars).
