Getting midi to follow audio
I did the drag and drop midi conversion thing for a bass part in a project that was audio only in X3. The audio doesn't follow the time ruler because I imported the all of the audio tracks and didn't adjust the tempo map to fit. The conversion worked out okay but the midi bass part doesn't follow the audio bass part. I think it's following the random project tempo. I'm a midiot, is there an easy way to make the midi track stay true to the audio track that it was created from. Thanks. Rocky

MIDI extracted from audio with Melodyne should follow the absolute timing of the audio, regardless of its relationship (or lack thereof) to the timeline. If the timing is off, it's because the note recognition/conversions did not go well. One thing that might help is to apply Melodyne to the audio clip as a Region FX before dragging the MIDI out. I've found that the one-step conversion is not as accurate. EDIT: That said, it would probably be a good idea to get the audio in sync with the timeline first; it will make life easier in the long run. You can try using Audiosnap's Set Project From Clip for this, but I generally prefer to just use Set Measure/Beat At Now (Shift+M) to tell SONAR where the measures (and individual beats if necessary) are.

Yeah, I was being lazy on the tempo map since the project was all audio. I have a click track that I can use to get the timeline set up. I'll play with melodyne some more and see if I can get better results. Thanks for the info. Rocky

So I imported the track into a new project and played around with the tempo. The midi track followed the project tempo. Is that because I don't have any audio tracks in the new project? I played around with absolute time vs. musical time in the original project but that didn't change anything. I'm trying to replace a bass track that was played poorly with a pick and is way too clicky (read way too much pick attack ). Any who, I'll get this sorted out and it was mucho fun messing around with the midi only version of the bass part in the new project. Rocky

Imported MIDI will take on the tempo of the project into which it's imported. But if it's on the beat, that would be odd given the audio from which it was extracted was not synced to the timeline. If you open the MIDI file from SONAR rather than importing it, the tempo(s) of the original project will come with it, and it should play with the same timing as that audio. But given that it didn't do that in the original project, I don't know what you'll get. Something isn't adding up, but without seeing the actual project firsthand, it's hard to say what might be going on. Incidentally, the Timebase setting only affects what happens to the start time of a clip when you change the tempo. By default, both audio and MIDI clips will retain their MBT start times, staying aligned with the timeline when you change the project tempo. If you switch to Absolute, nothing will happen until you change the tempo, and then clips will appear to move relative to the timeline as they maintain their absolute start times. But with either setting, the length of a conventional audio clip (i.e. not Groove-clipped or Audiosnapped) always follows absolute time, and the length of a MIDI clip always follows MBT time.

Thanks, Rocky. We're a couple blocks from Fountain creek, and about 100 feet above it, so the only problem we experienced directly was getting road-blocked out of the neighborhood by the authorities during rainstorms. Looks like we can expect more of the same for a few years due to the inability of burned soils from the Waldo Canyon fire to absorb water. But they've done some more drainage management and I think they're getting a handle on it. Tell your friends it's still a great place to visit; the town depends heavily on tourism.

I grew up in Colorado Springs. I just caught that you're in Lakewood. I lived there for a few years in an apartment on West 2nd Place. In fact, it was shortly after I moved in there that I bought my first computer and Cakewalk 1.0.
