Giga Studio Plugin/instruments -- HELP!

Hey folks! :D

So here's the situation: I'm running Sonar 8.5 with a Creative X-fi soundcard and I'm attempting to interface my MIDI keyboard with G-player so I can play my Sonic Implants instruments on my keyboard via my computer. The problem is, whenever my audio options are set to MME, there is a noticeable lag between notes. To solve this, I set my Audio settings to ASIO in hopes of removing the latency, but for some reason I can't hear anything at all (but can still see the MIDI-out light up when I play). All my soundfonts work just fine under ASIO so it must be an issue with G-player and ASIO. Any ideas about what I might be doing wrong here? Is there a work-around for this? Does G-player just suck? I've tried just about everything :p

G-player is a VXT plugin for sonar that allows it to play .gig instrument files. It works fine using MME but lags a bit when you press down a key. ASIO supposedly solves this problem, but for some reason the plugin isn't working with it. Should I just use Kontakt in stead?

I've never used G-player.  I got frustrated with gigastudio and bought kontakt and just converted all of my giga libraries to kontakt.  I didn't even install gigastudio on my new system.

the only problem is that all of the library functions don't port directly over.  gigapiano II doesn't work correctly and I miss it because it was the best piano I had.  but I bought the piano bundle from NI for Kontakt and I'm happy with that.

I use G-Player with my audio interface running in ASIO mode with no noticeable lag but then again I have a fast processor, lots of RAM, fast HD's as well as a great audio interface.

ASIO is a must for low latency -- MME just won't cut it.

G-Player is fine with ASIO, assuming you have an audio interface that supports it.

The problem is likely your Creative Card, which is primarily for gaming (despite the rather misleading advertising by Creative).  Check the card's documentation on using ASIO -- or failing that, take a look at kxproject.com which might help you make your card more "ASIO-friendly".

Thanks for all the suggestions guys... Really appreciate it!! Here's where I am now: It looks like my sound card is completely incompatible with the kxproject.com drivers(as stated on an error message during the installation). SO...

plan B: back to attempting to use ASIO 4 all. Nothing. Nada. The only thing that still seems to work with ASIO in Cakewalk Sonar are the sound fonts. NONE of my soft-synths seem to work with ASIO... just silence no matter what I do. I tried uninstalling ASIO 4 ALL in hopes that the Creative ASIO driver would just take over and run things without any conflicts. Well good news---it worked!!! Softsynths... Soundfonts... etc... The bad news is: "Creative ASIO" is even slower than friggin MME!!! Ugh... So I just reinstalled ASIO 4 ALL. Still nothing. Please don't tell me I wasted my money on a fancy-looking sound card that doesn't even play softsynths in cakewalk... :(

    again I'm using a Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty

    frustrating...

    Damn.

So anyone here have a good soundcard they can recommend? Money is not an object here. Ultimately all I really care about is being able to use Softsynths and soundfonts in Cakewalk...

    well, in that case!

check my website in my signature.  I have soundcard recommendations there!

one thing that I do not have on my website, however, which is important if you want to run GS without sonar, is that the soundcard drivers need to be GSIF compatible.  I don't have that info on my recommendations, so you'll have to pick a few that you like from the stuff that I DO have listed, then check them out and see if they are GSIF compatible or not.  I do know that the M-audio Delta series at least USED to be GSIF compatible before they updated drivers for vista/win7, but I don't know for certain if they are now or not.

Yeah, I really have no interest in actually using GigaStudio, all I really need is a card that'll allow cakewalk to use softsynths and such using ASIO. I'll take a look through your page and see I can find some useful info. Again, thanks for your help :)

Beagle and I do share one thing in common, we both use a MOTU UltraLite-mk3 although mine is firewire only and his is a hybrid.
Darn, bought mine one month too early!

I just wish it had ADAT on it too.  then it would be a killer system.

    Re:Giga Studio Plugin/instruments -- HELP! 2011/07/06 03:28:50 (permalink)
So a little update on the situation here:

Turns out, there was a workaround here after all. Essentially I just uninstalled ASIO-4-ALL... uninstalled and reinstalled all my creative drivers, set everything to straight "Creative-ASIO" inside cakewalk and, badda-boom, everything works great! Soundfonts, VSTs, plugins...

I guess the key here was cranking the Creative-ASIO buffer latency all the way down to 5ms. I had originally thought that setting the latency this low would cause major problems like dropouts and such, since that's mainly what used to happen when I set the latency in ASIO-4-ALL that low. For some reason the creative-ASIO handles it much better (probably due to the fact that it is a creative soundcard after all) lol

yeah, I finally bought Kontakt and ported all of my giga libraries into it, the only thing is that a few of them didn't translate perfectly like gigapiano (which I used nearly exclusively before giving up on gigastudio).

I haven't done a bunch of testing with it.. but you could try linuxsampler to load your giga libraries. Ive tested a few I had with it to see if it worked and it worked fine with my EMu1820m in Sonar (8.5 and x1).. but I dont use much of those anymore.

Give it a shot... it's a free download. Just google it. It IS a Windows VST. =)

    Good luck.
