"Glibfinger"

I guess I grew a little bored with Christmas music lol!. Last night I tracked this"arrangement". My goal was to go for something not using western scales,so I combined some alternate scale types here. This was intended to be an intro to a long series of songs.

I played the bass on my Ltd B-254  and guitar parts on my Variax JTV 69 set to les paul,as well as the sitar. I didn't use an alternate tuning on the variax. I doublechecked and I don't seem to have any clipping going on, but from my waveform the energy seems to be fairly constant. I added some limiting and EQ on individual tracks and slight compression.

I appreciate any comments either good or bad on this. Thanks for listening. I need to go in a little bit but I will return and give a listen to your tracks this evening.

Starise, sounded very good. Different. Enjoyed the sitar. Is it a real sitar? I thought the percussion was too far in the back, though. But that may be how it was supposed to be with the sitar.

I've been thinking about getting a Variax for a long time.  I liked the tones that you got from it.  I also think that the percussion could use a boost, but not too much.  I think the song is a bit long, since there aren't too many movements or changes.  Other than that, good job.

    All the best,

Pretty cool Sitar, and the les paul sounds good too. Whatever the WOS (Wall Of Sound) in the mid-range there is, I may pull back a little. I was thinking some more percussion but then in parts where the WOS pulled back some, I could hear some percussion. Toss in a Persian girl squealing in the background and your golden (eye!)

Hummm.  Got me thinking about a Variax again.

So this found me feeling around for the LOUDNESS button on my amp (oops - don't have one).  I agree with the previous comments about the drums being too low, but I think the low freqs need a boost across the board too.  Just out of curiosity, have you looked at this on a spectrum analyzer?  (then again I could just have my monitoring setup all goofed up)

Chasmcg- Thanks for listening and for your comments. I used a Line 6 Variax JTV-69 for the sitar and for the other electric guitar parts. Yes, the drums could be brought up some, I'll relaunch the mix and see what I can do.Thanks.

Lynn- I agree, I wanted to make a change in the piece and most of the changes were in variation within the theme. I'm still out on exactly what could be done at this point. Vocals entered my mind but I haven't talked myself into that yet, some interesting chord changes maybe. My take on the Variax-It has some excellent sounds in it that very closely mimic the real things, there are a few Les Pauls in it and for some reason I like the one in the middle setting. The first part was played through a sound in the POD HD 500 and then further treated within Amplitube Metal. I cloned the original take and added a second Amplitube Metal plug....so at least some of that was due to the amps used.

Bandontherun19-  I agree, there is something here I have not put my finger on yet...I need my glib-finger to get it right lol. Thanks for listening. Things seemed a little too localized in the wrong places in this mix.I tried to get the persian girl but things didn't pan out :)

gcolbert- Great idea! I'll see what I can do in that regard.

Thanks for listening and commenting,I appreciate it!

Very bold experiment there Tim, and nicely played too.  Sort of had a mid to eastern feel to me.  Very enjoyable listen.  BTW- I agree on the drums level.

(thanks for sparing the Christmas run here)

Awesome sea of exotic guitars and Eastern streams ... totally unique and crisp on my K701's.

Certainly the 1st of its kind that I've swam into ... taking me to Sahara, India, China and everywhere inbetween.

I may have pondered more restful sections ... though that may have taken from the parade-effect as a whole.

Ah!  .... what an awesome parade of those truly vintage stringed instruments!

    Hey, Tim,

Very cool sounding instrumental with a nice vintage vibe!

Excellent jamming and arrangement, and the mix sounds really good.  I love my Variax for the versatility, even though I haven't had it out of the case in about six months.  I do have some songs planned for it right after the new year.  The JT sounds great.

Nice work, Tim, cool stuff!  Have a Happy New Year!

    Hi there Tim

    Wow, this is really cool

The sitar is really convincing. I have an older Variax 700 with one on it, listening to this is making me want to go and try it out some more!

    Mix sounds very good overall.

I like these types of trippy tunes. Some sitar shredding would go nicely with this. Believe me, sitar players can shred.

Scotty- Thanks for listening/commenting Maybe goldfinger...or how about pinkie?lol.
Bob- Thanks man! Yeah the JTV is good for some things and then for other things it doesn't seem to have as  much vibe as my other guitar(a Laguna HSS with alinco 4s).I appreciate you listening and commenting on it. When are we gonna hear some more of that guitar stuff you do? I like it.

Janet- Thanks for your comments. I appreciate the time you  take to listen. You seem to be coming along nicely with some of that instrumental music!! If this sounds unique and unusual it's probably because at heart I'm a little unusual and unique lol! Who else do you know who will play a piano track one day and then go to a rock tune the next:)

     trimph1- Thanks dude.

Steve- Thanks for listening. I'm glad you liked the sitar. I seemed to take to liking it early on.In some settings it seems vert therapeutic(but not in this one). I hope to hear more of your stuff. I really like the sound of that vyper you got.

Paulo- Thanks man I appreciate you listening...James Bond was the man.
Guitarpima- Yes I imagine they can shred really well after chewing a few hashish leaves. I'm pretty game after three cups of coffee. Thanks for listening, I know in trying to be humourous I can be a SA, but I appreciate you listening.

Ihansen- Thanks for your comments. I wanted belly dancers but my wife didn't approve and I decided it would be just too distracting to play music while that was happening.

I wanted to hear some ethic drums on this, something deep and boomy.  I thought the distortion was at little fritzy in spots, I liked the tone, maybe roll the guitar volume back a bit.

We would have killed for this music in the 60s    Very transendental.  I like it.

    cool stuff, Tim!

you've got a POP at the very beginning of the song, that's due to stopping the transport in sonar when you've got verb tails that haven't finished playing and then when you mix down without allowing them to play first, it gets added at the begining.  to resolve that, always stop at the end of the song or play the song again after stopping in a silence area before mixing down.

love what you've got going on here.
