God Bless Richard Pryor and Eugene McCarthy

They'll both be Missed.
I owe them Both so Much.....

Edit:(12/14/05) My Apologies to Cake and the Moderators, this was simply supposed to be a tribute to 2 people who had (imho) a deep and profound effect on the 20th century. I only wish that I could have as an important effect on my generation. After reading a few responses below, I thoroughly agree with your decision to move the post to the Off-topic area and to lock it. Both R.P. and E.M. had a way of polarizing people and issues in a positive way.
My only regret is that this post probably failed to do that.

Anyway, God Bless them and their families. And Thanks.

Rest both of their souls. I never really cared for Richard Pryor's comedy though, probably a minority. Never really cared for Eric Clapton or Bob Dilan but everyone else loved them... probably get chastised for these remarks.

All did not agree with his comedy, many felt he crossed the line and was too profane, but he still paved the way for alot of todays comedians, not only that but many like myself grew up watching his many movies that where pretty clean as a child.I myself don't agree with his dirtiest comedy but still recognize him as a legend! And now when i look at todays comedians richard pryors comedy seems clean and pure (iyaya)!

This strikes me as a thread to pay last respects to the two names in the topic. Personally, I think if you didnt have something possitively related to say, you shouldnt have said anything.

I see your comment about Richard Pryor as an insult. It's like going to a person's funeral and saying to the congregation, "I didnt care." That's rude.

i understand what you mean thomas but this is also a public forum ...

irrespective of that, richard pryor has had me in pain rolling on the floor in the past ... at least we know that where ever he is its very likely that someone is in pain with tears rolling down their cheeks laughing their asses off and trying to catch their breath.

Even public forums have implied rules of decency and common sense.

Richard Pryor had his faults as anyone else. Yet, at his death the mass media set out to recognize his contribution to humanity (which was his attempt at spreading laughter and humor to entertain. He is being recognized after death for his comedy).

So for someone to come in a thread and make the comment that he/she didnt care for his comedy, implies that the person making such a comment really doesnt recognize Richard Pryor for his contribution to humanity, which is another way of saying it's crap that he's being reconized for his humor, seeing that I didnt care for it. Even that opinion is harsh, but understandable and tolerative under normal circumstanes (heck, we know the saying that everyone is entitled to his/her on opinion).

However, this is not a situation of normal circumstance. It's a thread for recognition and condolences of two people who have made above average contributions to humanity. So, to come in and make the comment that he didnt care for Richard Pryor's comedy is extremely rude under the circumstances! You may believe everyone is entitled his or her own opinion, but there's a time to speak and a time to refrain from speaking. In other words, although this is a public forum, there is still a time for users to apply common sense and decency.

sure, its not good sense to come in here and start saying that its all a bit over the top (which i dont agree with btw) and that you didn't like him, but also remember that this thread is about as off topic as i've ever seen in here ...

hehe I know, but there is no longer a CoffeShop forum for us to post off topic posts afaik.
That's why I think the starter of this thread started tis thread in here.

I loved Richard Pryor! He made me laugh so much, I used to cry tears! I'm glad we still have around the movies he was in. I'm gonna try to get Stir Crazy, I be rolling on the part when Richard Pryor is in jail and some dude tries to punk him out, and then a bigger dude comes to his rescue. Gene Wilder has me crying tears too, when he rides that mechanical bull in the wardens office! Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder are so funny to me in a good number of their movies!

OK I'll leave this alone now.

Well, as one who has nothing but tremendous admiration for both Gene McCarthy and Richard Pryor, I have no such conflict about what's rude and what's not. Both made contributions- one via the arts, and one through the political process- that had a liberating effect for a great many people.

I think what set Pryor apart is that as a comic artist, he was the complete package. He excelled as a physical comedian as well as a wry and poignant social commentator. Most successful comedians are specialists one or the other. Pryor was brilliant at both.

I couldn't agree more. I remember as a child sneaking to listen to his 8-track tapes my parents owned. Very few comedians could make you wet yourself and keep you in pain like Richard did. I have several of his albums memorized line by line I listen to them so much. He's definitely the MJ (take your pick) of comedy.

Check out his boxed set just released a few years ago...worth every penny.

RIP Richard. You will surely be missed.

you know what worries me? ... is watching these folks pass on that i grew up watching/reading/listening too/respecting etc ...

a great reminder of mortality and so forth ... and i'm only 29!!!

and 65 ... man that is too young for someone like pryor. when you think that some of the 'evil' folks live well beyond that. i guess considering how hard a lot of his early life was 65 is a good innings and there is no doubt that he lived a great one.

its very sad to think that the MS made him depressed and non-communicative though. personally i think the label 'genius' is ciminally overused these days when people are writing obituaries but i think its more than fair to level that one at pryor.
