God Is The Light

http://soundcloud.com/rebel007/god-is-the-light-101213lta

Hi all, this is my very first song post, hope you enjoy.
This song was written by my significant other half in the shower one morning. When she had finished the shower we fired up Sonar and recorded the six or so parts (including my two low vocal tracks), in the space of about 30mins. Then just a quick balance with a little EQ, Delay and Reverb, and it was done.
I think this is as far as we will take this recording. When there's more to be done I think we will record from scratch and aim for a different feel.

Doh! Forgot to save at the end. try now.

    Yeah... there it is.

A CAPPELLA song.... cool!! It reminds me of the older early P&W tunes where a simple chorus was sung over and over, crossed up with a kind of chant.   The minor chords make it darker than I would expect.

Good job on the recording. It took me a few measures to catch the whole vibe.... melody, chords, etc. A few pitch issues but nothing major.

Sounds good. I'm hoping you do take this song further, as it could work out for many gods, that seem to be out there. Nice vocals and I get where you are coming from, but no all will. I always try to be more specific about my God, who is the true light, who's name begins with a J.

Thanks for the listen, you got it I think, there was an attempt to give the effect of a chant, and we will be exploring that further. Shame on my spelling.  Back to school for me.

Great! Melodies, harmonies - awesome. I do think this shouldn't be all a cappella though. I hear a gospel piano, drum and bass on this. But that's me.

Yes, very cool.  I usually don't go for the a Capella type stuff, but this is very well done.  I heard a few little pitch issues as well, but nothing major.  Very good blend of vocal tracks.

Very cool! Your wife has a great voice.

Others have noted the pitch issues so I won't continue to beat that horse. They are very minor and probably something that would not have been noticed as much if this wasn't a  vocal only performance.
I think it would be a great benefit to add a  bass vocal to it.The low voice would round it out more. Also, if you were to add a fiesty emotional solo vocalist after some of those vocal stops, things could take off.Someone with pipes like Aretha Franklin....kick it in with drums...ok I'm getting carried away. Sounds good like it is too.

A Capella song? I love those boy's at Capella! They rock hard.

I enjoyed this, but I'm not sure what the message is/what it's trying to tell me?

Good singing though, good job ;-)

I, too, like the a capella arrangement of this song.  I think it helps to define the message rather than obscure it.  You both have pleasant voices, and they were captured quite well.  The overall melody is captivating which makes this song a hit for me.

    All the best,

Thanks for the feedback everyone, it's good to know that we are on the right track. I find it hard to add too much pitch correction because I find it obvious if too much is used. There were only two notes that I corrected, both at the end of a line, on the melody part, so they really stood out and had to be corrected or re-recorded. They weren't too far off so I went for the correction.
There is a bass vocal to be added, kind of a low drone, so I hope that will add to the low end. I also hope to add a vocal that is slightly different and more off beat, with different words and timing, to give it a more "solo vocal" feel. Will have to see if this will work or takes away from the "chant" feel we were after.
Thanks again for everyone's kind feedback.

Excellent - I really like this.
I'm ashamed to say that all I could think about was how it would sound with a 4/4 kick drum going underneath it - it would be a lot of fun to make into a dance track.

Love it.  I can sure hear alternate versions w/ percussion, instruments etc..  But this is REALLY good as is.  I see you're not the songwriter.  You might consider crediting him/her (and the vocalists too).

    Super nicely done.

No, pitch correction is the devil's work and sucks the soul out of real performance (enough of the metaphor now). Nothing wrong w/ a few pitch problems, makes the harmonies shine w/ the rubbing.  I'll take authentic anyday.

Very bold - a cappella.  Gotta love it when it works, which this does.

A capella arrangements can be daunting in that the harmonies can be more scrutinized. I agree with AT that over-polishing the pitch can sometimes take the authentic feel away but this track is soo close to being perfect that I would go back and fine tune the harmonies. That being said, I also don't know if I would have had the guts to try an a capella piece
