Goin' Home

This tune is notable only for its profoundly personal significance. I wrote it in February 2014 on the eve of our departure for my wife's birthplace in the Philippines. It was always the highlight of her year making that annual pilgrimage. And the highlight of my year, too, mainly because it made her so happy.

I think only an immigrant can relate to what it means to pull up stakes, abandoning family and all that's familiar to build a new life in a strange land. She never complained and always worked very, very hard. So hard it often shamed me into re-examining my own comfortable complacence that came from growing up middle-class and always having enough to eat.

I've dusted this one off again because the lyrics have assumed new meaning, as I pack her remains into a box for one last trip home.

The vocal was intended as just a scratch track. I just didn't ever get around to recording a proper vocal, and now I can't bring myself to do it. So it is what it is.

The song is beautifully written, performed and mixed...and I'm sorry for your loss. There is a little stereo effect going on with the keys I like...what are you doing there? Is it a leslie?

My thoughts are with you.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

I think it was just a stereo ping-pong Wurli patch that I used there, a stock patch from my Yamaha MO8. Aside from basic reverb and delay, the mix is pretty much devoid of effects. I always meant to go back and remix it, clean it up, add the vox. Or at least fix up those flat notes! I don't even think it was properly mastered, as it sounds a little quiet to me now.

But I've left it alone as a document of that moment. To help me remember what it felt like when we were optimistic, when we acted as though there would be an inexhaustible supply of tomorrows, each one better than the last.

Great song! I love when I can feel it and be part of it as opposed to just listening. Very moving.

Very nice, Bit.   It's got feel, no question, but also played and arranged well.   There's a good amount of reverb in the mix but I think it suits the song well and only adds to the overall feel.  Vocals sound OK here!   I wouldn't change anything.

That is very pleasant to listen to, for such a deeply overwhelming moment in your life.

Richard Brautigan, wrote something about a Karma Repair kit, decades ago, that I like, for when we are in these kind of places; (something like this...)
1. Find a quiet place to sleep and get enough of it
2. Get enough food to sustain you and eat it.
3. Be still/quiet until you remember who you are and why you want to be here........

Take care

Dave,

Sorry to hear of your loss, belated, as I see you posted this a few weeks back.    The song is really good and a nice reminder for you of the good times.  Those memories are always what gets you through it.   Wouldn't change a thing about it, everything is great including your "scratch" vocal track.

Regards

My condolences. The song is fantastic, I liked the vocals actually. Listened to it on really poor headphones though, will give it another go when I get home.
