Going to Cancun!

Yep, after doing lots of research on the FL Keys, and almost booking flights, etc....I happened to see an ad for 6 nights, 5 days in Cancun for only $199. ALL-INCLUSIVE---food, drinks, hotel, etc. That saves renting a car, trying to find a place to stay, buying food, etc. The flights are a little more expensive but not much. So...Oct. 9-14, here we come. Anyone else gonna be there? :) Too bad I don't drink...

cancun sounds like fun.  it's no surprise you found good rates this late in the season.

I'd love to go inland and see the Aztec pyramids!

    Janet,

I went there for a wedding in November. The weather was superb. Never too hot. Enjoy it, but not before you wrap up all loose ends .

Great, Cancun can be a fantastic place!
If you're looking for any tips, PM me - i've been there a few times and know it pretty well.

Also, a great resource is http://www.cancuncanuck.com/, a site that a good friend has.  It's partially about an expat living there, but there are a lot of tourism-related posts too (and pics to get you excited).

Thanks Reece. We just might try that! Thanks Mike. It does, doesn't it? :) Craig, I did that this summer, so I hear ya. Sorry. :( I hope you can get away sometime. Does it help if this is the first real vacation we've had in years. And may be the last...unless we get addicted and keep finding good prices, of course... Thanks Ed. Yeah, hot sounds good right now. I'll get to those loose ends tonight I hope. :) Thanks Bill! Thanks Matt. I'll do that. Just found out our next door neighbors were there a few years ago and has some great ideas too.

Yeah, I'm sure Cancun will be nice, but be sure to avoid the second week of October!  That's their hurricane/escaped serial killer/zombie season.

I'd love to meet up with you there Janet, but unfortunately I'm no longer welcome in Mexico. It was due to an unfortunate Tequila fueled evening, during which I attempted to purchase a young lady to take as my wife. At least that's what I was told the next morning by my Mexican attorney, whom I believe my traveling buddies paid with questionable checks. The young lady in question happended to be married to a local official of some sort, and apparently was quite upset when I hoisted her over my shoulder and attempted to walk out of the cantina with her "pirate style". In my mind at the time, I'm sure this seemed a sensible thing to to. Thus, another reason I don't drink Tequila.

Enjoy yourselves, and I hope it's the vacation of your lives.

I have a feeling you would definitely raise the 'fun' quotient of our week there, Randy.  :)   Sorry you can't make it.  But I WILL keep in mind not to try to abduct any young women...or anyone else for that matter.  Or at least to be more selective, I guess.  :)

So far I've managed to stay quite sober with iced tea for some reason.

Hi Janet, Besides not drinking the water, be careful of anything that involves the water--like salads and vegetables that get washed and drinks with ice cubes. Have a fun time, Jan

Somehow I often recall that old Bill Cosby skit about employees that drank.  One of them countered that 'drinking enhances my personality!' To which his boss replied, 'yeah, well what if you're an idiot?'

Sorry Scott....but I think I told you before.  :)  Just the thought of the possibility of all the leaves being gone by then sorta diminished the excitement level.  And well, the man of the house decided to stay south (which was fine with me once it turned cool here).  THEN I saw that deal for Cancun and it seemed right.  Time will tell.  I'm still sorry I won't get to stop by your studio though.  :(

Mexico always sounds like fun... you can practice your language skills with the locals.

Just be careful. The advice I have seen advises tourists to stay in and on the resort properties and to be very careful when venturing into the towns and country.

Our church had a mission trip planned for the teens this past summer in Veracruz. I pulled my daughter from the trip due to the increased violence. The church finally took my advice and canceled the trip when 2 people were shot down on the sidewalk in front of the motel the teens were going to be staying at..... drug gang war revenge killings.

Mexico has changed and not for the better over the last decade or so.... the tourists are not going due to the violence, hence the very low all inclusive prices on the resorts there. I'm not trying to rain on the vacation, just saying be very careful down there when you are in the town. Use the resort shuttles to get to town and back....be careful of the local taxi's.

    Get pictures.

That's more relevant for the north and west sides of the country.  Quintana Roo is a VERY different atmosphere, and (relatively) extremely safe as tourism is it's only source of revenue.  Tourists are protected and crime against them are punished harshly, as any local violence costs them millions in revenue.
I wouldn't venture into the darker, quieter areas of Centro (the "local mexican" half of the city) after dark alone, but you're fine in the more populated areas like Avenida Tulum, and the Hotel Zone (including all the shops, bars, and restaurants).
Of course you should be vigilant wherever you go, but Cancun is one of the safest places you can go on holiday.  Period.  Certainly safer than most US cities i've been in.  Don't let the drug wars in the north and west ruin your holiday.

PS.  if you're a carnivore, there's a steakhouse called Rio Churrascaria in the Hotel Zone that serves one of the best meals I've ever had.
