Good $100-$300 Mic for Vocals? Buying as a gift tomorrow. Cut down nose-holding vocs?

Hey, I'm looking to buy a mic for my brother. He's good at piano and wants to start singing along with it.

He already has a Midi Piano, a good Piano VST Library, and a Line 6 UX2 Pre-Amp

I was looking at the SM57, SM58, AKG 220, AKG 420, and Rode NT1A. I'm a complete novice when it comes to recording, so if you guys could give your recommendation on a good mic for this price range, I would greatly appreciate it.

When he sings high notes, he sounds alright, but kind of sounds like he's holding his nose while he's singing a little bit. I know the proper thing to do for this would be to get him singing lessons. BUT... I figured a good mic would be nicer :P

But is there a mic that can cut down on the nose-holding part of the vocals and bring out the rest of his voice? I will attach a sample later if I can find one. He hits all the pitches, it's just its a bit annoying.

It's very time consuming to find the mic that makes each voice sound the best.

I like SM57s and SM58s a whole lot. I have bunches of them. They are great.

But, the next time I buy a hand held singing mic I'm going to get a Sennheiser 935 because they just sound better than my old favorites.

With regards to your budget... don't discount the need for a mic stand etc... it's hard to play piano and sing without a good stand.

The inexpensive condenser mics you mentioned might be nice... do you have a phantom power preamp/mixer?

I have watched a lot great singers make $99 dollar Shure sound great.

    Good luck,
    mike

This is probably a little late considering your gift deadline.... but I picked up a shure pg27, it's phantom powered, large diaphram condensor mic,  pretty inexpensive & i have had good luck with vocals (Not on everyone but still), bass guitar, acoustics, & even some electric guitars recorded with it.  just my 2 cents.

ADK Built DAW, W7, Sonar Platinum, Studio One Pro,Yamaha HS8's & HS8S  Presonus Studio/Live 24.4.2, A few decent mic pre's,  lots of mics, 57's,58 betas, Sm7b, LD Condensors, Small condensors, Senn 421's,  DI's,  Sans Amp, A few guitar amps etc. Guitars : Gib. LP, Epi. Lp, Dillion Tele, Ibanez beater, Ibanez Ergodyne 4 String bass, Mapex Mars series 6 pc. studio kit, cymbals and other sh*t.

the better the mic, the more annoying the 'nose holding' is going to be.

    just so you'll know.
