Good cheapo basses? brands?
So right now I'm deep in the market for a real bass. It's doesn't have to be anything special (I'm a noob), and really I'm hoping I can get away with spending ~$100. I've seen a Greg Bennett Corsair on craigslist recently at that price, and I actually own one GB guitar so it's a deal I wouldn't have minded (had it not been taken down pretty much the next day). What brands are reputable in this case? What should I stay away from?

No brand is safe from having a warped neck. Personally I would be very reluctant to shop in the lower price point without looking at the instrument. Or at least a 100% return free of charge and shipping deal. When I try cheap guitars and Basses in music stores the necks are always the issue. You can get something used for that price but more like $200 buy's a entry level Bass new. I like Fender and Yamaha myself, but there can be many brands you've never even heard of at that price. I picked up a used Hondo for $75 and it's a vintage gem.

I have been very impressed with Fender's Squier, Vintage Modified series of guitars and basses. Watch for one that is used if this is still over your budget.

Actually that GB Corsair is still on my local craigslist for $100. Could it be decent? I'd have to say I LOVE my GB Torino electric, so I'm not super-fearful that it's going to be a bad bass since it's at least got the same name on it. I'd bring along some gear to test it out a bit if I do pick it up. I guess the warped neck issue is definitely something to look out for... about how much damage is that usually done? Like, how difficult is it to then play on a warped neck? (just curious, not that I'd buy one with one) The Squier has always looked like a nice one, and I love the flat, wide neck of the Squier guitar... if it's anything the same, I'll definitely keep my eyes open for one!

Price isn't the only factor. Cheap can also be great. I had a very nice 1973 P-Bass that everyone loved except me. It looked great and was worth a few bucks, but it didn't sound good. I bought a piece of junk Korean bass for $50 and replaced the pickup for $90. It's still my bass of choice. It sounds and feels great, with a super resonant body. No regrets in dumping the Fender.

Actually, afxr, you bring up a good point.... I AM in the used market, and switching out the pickups (once I get the hang of it, or outsource it) shouldn't be too expensive of a job. Kev, I'll make sure to look at Ibanez. Any particular ones you recommend? I'm not actually sure exactly how much I'll have to partition to the bass, but I know $100 is the MINIMUM. Probably won't be over $125, but I definitely wanna be able to pick it up sometime within the next two weeks before the snow hits. Rimshot, the 3/4 Ibanez looks pretty good.. any trial vids on Youtube? I definitely wanna hear one. I think I'm really looking for something versatile- something that can fit both a smooth-ish, sort of soft, low backing bass, as well as one that can get pretty gnarly in the mids/highs for slap and the Bouncing Souls bass sound. Probably a pickups issue to fix that, I'm guessing

Friend of mine recently picked up one of the less cheap Squier Jazz Basses as a backup because his old US Fender needed a partial refret, fingerboard work and full fret-dress and he needed something to play while the work was done.
Friend actually prefers the Squier, and it has to be said it sounds pretty good.
Bear in mind that the guitar market is very competitive, and corners get cut to keep prices down at the lower priced end of the market. There's usually a much bigger difference between a $200 and $400 instrument than between a $750 and $1500. Which is not to say that good cheap guitars don't exist. They do and if you're lucky you find one. It's just that spending a bit more makes it less likely you'll find a rubbish one.
As for warped necks, they are the exact opposite of fun and can be difficult and expensive to fix (if possible, often a new neck is needed). Same with bad fret jobs, where you get some frets much higher than others, truss rods that don't work, bridges fitted in the wrong place etc.

I would definitely make a point to spend more on a higher quality instrument... sadly I have an approx. set quantity I can spend since the holidays are coming up and I'm a jobless high schooler I see the warped neck is a big possible issue... I'm gonna make sure to bring some info on quality checks with me, since this will be my first major instrument purchase on my own. What do you guys think of the Ibanez Gio line? I know they're sort of the 'beginner-bass' and honestly the reviews don't seem to point to something I'm bound to fall in love with. Someone's got a brand new Gio sort of local to me, but I'm still pretty decently content hoping to check out the Samick GB.

Your friend probably picked up one of the Vintage Modified Squiers, they are pretty well built. Change out pickups and hardware upgrades later if you feel it is needed, but to my ears, they sounded and played very nicely.
Jazz Bass would give you a little bit of that growl when you dig in.

My brother worked at a pawn shop and they had some very good basses that they paid practically nothing for. If you go to one, don't be afraid to bargain. If you can, bring someone along that plays bass to help you assess what they've got. I can't think of another way to find a good playing and sounding bass for anywhere near $100. Most basses can produce a smooth backing sound. A bass with a good slap sound and is fun to play is much harder to find for that price.

Samick , When I had the music store they were my # 1 cheapo guitars and basses. Back in the 90's they were still made in Korea. But they blew away all other low end brands. The finishes and necks were first class. I sold ton of them and everyone was happy. Plain ( Black/Red or White) finishes sold for $199 back then. Of course you must realize that no matter which brand, including low end Fenders, the Pick ups will be sub standard. But that is super easy to upgrade if it is a standard Fender type PU. Weird PU are sometimes hard to find upgrades for. But thankfully most el cheapo brands use Fender type PU's. The common configuration is the P/ Jazz combo. P Bass PU are split so there is 2 offset, Jazz PU are narrow and one piece. My Hondo has a standard P bass so I bought a Dmarzio for $70 that made a huge difference. Bass guitars puts a lot of tension on a neck, that is why I said to be careful about twisted or warped necks. Pick it up and look from the bridge along the strings towards the nut. It should be nice and level with no side to side variation. And look for frets that are all level and not looking like ties on an abandoned railway line. There should be no string buzzes and it should be easy to play. You don't want too low an action on a bass but it should not buzz if played a little aggressively. I don't recommend buying a short scale bass , sometimes called 3/4, unless you want a dull thud kinda sound. Short scale basses do not have the same tension on the strings so have very little twang. They are the opposite of the sound of a Jazz bass or Ricky. I used to own a Gibson EB0 which was short scale. I used it for Bluegrass. Another thing to think about- The biggest problem with shopping used is people who play and are knowledgeable about this stuff, only sell instruments they don't like. So look for used among people who don't have a clue and bought it but never learned to play. Pawn shops always charge double the going price.

I figured it'd be a chore to find one with nice slap. Although for some reason (given that I haven't done any mods personally) I get the feeling most of that sound is attributed to the pickups and strings? johnnyV, conveniently the guy who has the Samick has no clue about. it whatsoever- he apparently bought it for his daughter. Hopefully I can talk him down to around $80, and I mean, at that price I don't think it'll even be any sort of a loss if it can do slap! I'll keep your inspection in a safe place. I'm sure you guys can see there's a high chance I 'll just end up settling on the Samick, mostly because I own an instrument by them and so I KNOW the quality of these instruments can't be too far off. (I'm playing y Greg Bennett right now!) plus, I feel if I buy new, I'll get less for the money. johnnyV's statement there pushes me a little further, even. Pawn shops feel a little out-of-reach in my case... there is a local one, but it's pretty dumpy, I think (LOADS of ultra-cheap acoustics and cheesy keyboards)

While I have some very nice high end guitars and basses, I do have an affection for cheap guitars as well. I was born during the time of Silvertone, Harmony, Trutone, and Danelectro was relatively new to the market. In the last few months I found myself buying and using Fender Squiers and Epiphones. When I say that I mean the $100 line. The workmanship and sound of the Squiers has vastly improved for as cheap a guitar as it is. As far as basses, you would have to go a long way to beat my Fender Squier Modified fretless Jazz Bass. I did replace the Seymour Duncan Designed pick ups with some better Seymours. Ibanez is a very good guitar for the money. There are a lot of good quality basses listed on Ebay if you trust buying a guitar before trying it out. Bottom line, there is no written law that a very expensive bass is any better than a cheap one these days. The lines seem to blur now between big money instruments and what I call mongrels.

I've had a few cheap basses over the years. I had a Washburn from a pawn shop that had a great neck and just needed the pickups upgraded. I had a Hondo that I used for years and it was dirt cheap and durable. One of the basses I have now is an LTD and it was fairly cheap, but it plays and sounds pretty good considering what it cost.

For my uses, I've never planed to be a GREAT guitar/bassist, so the extent of my bass-playing will probably be in small church jazz combos (NOT gospel, I just wanted slap for my home studio projects). I actually got to play an Ibanez Mikro recently, I like how it feels- it's not too huge, it can get some nice gnarly sounds... I'll keep looking around!

Something to also consider is passive/active pickups. I got a nice bass from a friend years ago that had active pickups that never gets played because I hate batteries. If I leave them in it and forget they may leak.

You have a synth. No, it is not a bass, but you do not have to buy strings for it or anything else. If it has bass synth patches for sound, then it will still be enough to do the job for maybe a few years yet. ??

Well, that is up to you, and aching fingers playing those big thick strings. Well I had a Gibson SG 5 string bass at one time, only would consider a Fender Jazz type bass or Gibson EBO type bass (Epiphone) whatever make whatever is made.
