Good clean bass amp

Hey, I am looking at buying a bass amp.  I want something that has a clean, reliable sound.  Bells and whistles are OK but not high on the priority list.  I just returned a LINE 6 110, too much buzz.  I am going to use it to jam with in the living room, do not need to be too loud.

I have about 200 to 300 to spend (yup, it is a hobby for me comes with a budget)

Any suggestions would be great.

    I've always liked SWRs too.

On another thread here I recommended scouring ebay for used Trace Elliot and Ashdowns - there are plenty about and at reasonable prices.

For a low cost  small " living room " rig, I think you can pick up the small Ampeg combo's for about 300.00 new.

Just checked...379.00 new at MF.   Seen a number of them used for less than 300.00. Lots of reviews here too.

+1 for the Ampeg BA115 . I bought a used one (for a rediculously low price) about 6 or 7 years ago.  It's sounds nice and it's built like a tank.  I have also seen used used ones listed on sites like Craigslist for bargain prices.

You also can't go wrong with the SWRs.

Thanks to one and all and Happy Holidays!

PS In messing around with the amp, I used a different bass and it sounds much better.  May keep the amp and get a new pick up  for my Musicmaster bass.  Anybody know anything about AERO pickups?

My sister has a Musicmaster bass. Short scale - baby blue. Never crazy about the sound, but I used to borrow it to record with back in the day (Tape). She played it through a Peavey Bass amp. I'm glad I found a good recording bass shortly there after. I have had it for years. Wish I had it now. I left it back in the states. I'll bring it up when I go down at Christmas time. Those Musicmasters may be in demand these days. It'll probably be hard to find a decent replacement pickup which doesn't require routing into the body. Never hear or AERO pickups are they direct replacements?

Tap, the Aero has arrived and helped with the sound but still getting distortion.  Next I played the bass through my guitar amp, sounded great, could not turn up the volume really loud tho. Anyways the Aero is a direct replacement for Musicmaster, did not have to modify the guitar one bit.

Back to looking at amps on Craigs list.  Saw a SWR to check out.

Any comments on Yorkville or Peavey?

Well, if found a amp.  It is a Hartke Kickback 15, wow, its good.  Still having some buzz issues, it is my bass.  I checked around and need to "shield" the electronics.  Going to try a home remedy soon.  WCO

Shield the pickup cavities... and the pickups with copper foil.
This can make a huge difference.

Mark V stuff from Italy these days

The MarkBass stuff is pretty good.
I had a LittleMark II head for a while.
It's clean/punchy... relatively inexpensive... and weighs nothing.
Not crazy about the MarkBass cabs.

I sold the LM-II to get an SVT Classic.
    Major step backward in weight
Major step forward in classic bass tone

If the OP already had a small bass cab, the Ampeg Micro VR head would be perfect.
Sounds great... it's pretty light... the DI sounds good... and it's right in the OP's price-range.

I must say, the Markbass stuff blew me away. I had a Little mark 800 on tour recently, and apart from the 400W cab I could lift with my little finger (I am serious), the head sounded like a HiFi live and in the studio. The head also doubles as a great DI as it doesnt need a speaker load. If you want CLEAN, check it out. http://217.64.194.186/

Yea, I am going to have to do some research on shielding.  If anyone knows of a link for "how to" please forward.  Thanks, Wayne

I guess I should read the labels better... :-)

Yes, the Mark Bass... not Mark V.

    :-)

Personally, I play an rebuilt point to point SVT clone in a old AMPEG chassis. Wicked and HEAVY.

Mark Bass on the high end or Acoustic line at GC on the low end (clean but a little noise).

There are some new Reissue amps from Ampeg you might want to look at as well.

For shielding see if you can locate some of that paint on stuff from say Stewart Macdonald.
Another issue is a lot of instruments did not use shielded cable so sometimes re wiring using shielded cable will help. But for me it's always been the Pick ups. My Cheapo Yamaha Bass was almost unusable in the studio unless I stood 10' away from any electronics but I plunked a De Marzio  P/J combo from Musicians Friend for $100 and it's dead quiet now. I did also re wire with shielded cable.

Did the shielding, made a remarkable difference.   Gonna have to stick with my set up for a couple of years with the investment in the pickup: $120, amp $200 and and time in.  Sounds pretty good tho.  Now I just have to play an hour a day.......................
