'Goodbye to Humdrum' - collab

Hello all,

Here's a tune of mine which started out kind of gloomy but ended up a good deal more cheerful!

I had some very nice input on this from my good pal Larry Hansen, who provides mandolin and backing vocals, thanks Larry - all comments and suggestions for improvements would be most welcome, hope you enjoy!

Goodbye to Humdrum

    James,
Yes, that did end up being a cheerful tune. I like it that way. Nice work. You mentioned background vocals but I didn't hear any lyrics. I like how it starts with the electric but goes into that whole acoustic/mandolin feel.

I don't have any tips on the mix since I have trouble with that. It sounded okay to me.

Oh yeah, instant smile when the acoustic, bass and padded drum come in. Really nice stuff gents, gentle happy motion. Great melodic hooks. Mandolin and vocals really nice. Thoughtful buildup of instruments. Quite the treat.

James - this was excellent, indeed! An absolute uplifting and positive vibe, it has - something you'd hear at campfires, or at private jammings. Wonderful. Larry, the mandolin was awesome and fits the whole song so perfectly. The backing 'Ooohs' sounded great too. Wonderful.
What a treat. Thanks, for this.

Great jam, indeed. Constantly waiting for a lead voice to kick in.

    Good playing. Nice one.

Thanks Rob, if only I could sing..or write lyrics

Heinz! Thanks a lot pal, the tune was based on an uplifting time, so that's good to hear. Larry did a fine job, didn't he?

Hey Bob, good to see you my friend, thanks for taking the time, I appreciate it.

Bill - thanks for the encouragement, this is the first time I've I've committed my bodhran to 'tape'...I think...

Hi Tony, cheers man, glad you liked it. It was a little, umm, heavy originally, but then I hit on the acoustic guitar version, and it made much more sense, so the intro is all that's left of the doomy version! (Larry is doing the 'ooohhs' btw)

Thanks John, the title is a little obscure, but to cut a long story short I used to live in a house called 'Humdrum'....in a different country

Now that is nice. Sounds like a friend of mine from Scotland wrote this one. That's a really nice tune but I think it begs for a vocal, that melody is so lyrical (by that I mean it begs to be sung).

Nice tone on that intro guitar, a Marshall sim?

The percusion instruments sure are subtle but I think that may be what you intended. With phones the tamborine comes thru clearly but I'm struggling to hear the hand drums.

    Great job James and Larry.

Thanks to all for the wonderful comments!

This was definitly a fun piece to work on, and I appreciate James allowing me to be a part of this.

James. - Nice, subtle, changes you've made to this song.

Beautiful guitar and mandolin work, love the melody lines. It's great the way it is but I agree it is ripe for some vocals. Love the mood it puts out.

I liked that a lot. I was a little worried that it was going to be a Black Sabbath tribute with that opening riff, but it turned around quite nicely.

    Well done, gentlemen.

Thanks Ed M, and sorry about the brush with the 'dark side' at the start there

Hi Ed E , much appreciated, thank you.

Larry - many thanks again, the mandolin (and the 'oohs') really made this piece. Hey, we'll have enough tracks for a CD soon, eh?

Hey Frank, that's nice of you, cheers buddy! And yes, that's a Marshall amp sim on one of the guitar patches in my BR-8. The bodhran does get a little lost as the tune goes on, I'll experiment with some compression & eq on that, thanks.

Nice tune. Has a bittersweet quality about it. At times though, a real bouncy, chuggy rhythm promises to emerge, but never quite hits it it seems to me. I dunno why.

Larry, James: a really good vibe to this all the way through. I nver caught a whiff of the "dark side" of it. I think it stands on its own minus any vocals, but nevertheless, I can see how vocals would fit nicely. And the tune is evocative, it suggests more to come in a similar vein.

    Hi James,
    some intro...heh...
I like this song , it has a nice feel and vibe
organic and somewhat lite , ...floating
good start , blends well with all the other songs on your page
aside from a few nits ( timing in places ) hhmm a few pints by the campfire?
can be developed and dialed in some more and extended imo

I like this James...Oh yeah, Larry you did good too. This is a really sweet, eclectic, folky kind of tune. I'd have to agree, a vocal would be a nice addition.
