Gordon Lightfoot Edmund Fitzgerald Tribute 10/20
Working on this trying to fight my way around a few Audio Snap bugs and an issue with setting prefader gains compared to what Sonar is actually registering. Anythoughts on the mix itself? I performed all drums, Acoustic and Electric guitars and the bass Vocals are Mr Lightfoot Radio transmissions and Newscast are actual recordings Thanks for thoughts on the mix in advance http://soundcloud.com/dig...itzgerald-tribute-10-1

Mike, I like this from beginning to end. The mix sounds very good on my speakers, and the overall song is an excellent tribute of one of my favorite songs of the past. The radio transmissions and newscast are a nice touch. How did you manage to get the vocal? Anyway, you just get better and better.

This is a really cool take on this song. I love the actual audio clips of them looking for the wreck and talking about. It sounds a tad bit boomy to me, but I don't have my monitors set up and I'm listening on some low end headphones. X2 has been working fine for me so far. A far cry from what X1 did to my poor DAW.

cool song. Nice job on the music and the vocals are good. I'd bring the vocals up a bit, by a few db.... the radio broadcast is fine and a nice touch. The bass seems to be a bit boomy on these speakers too. The drums don't stand out like they should. The "Big Lake".....

Frank Lynn Bub Herb Vicente Thanks for the comments I did go back and do some changes on the mix as noted above Somehow I hid one of my sliders in CV so I had to go back to TV and adjust from there Brought Bass and Newscast Down a tad, brought up the vocals. I uploaded it to Reverb until I get a chance to add it back onto SoundCloud. Anyone know how to unhide a track in CV? LOL Dont know how it happened, all I did intentionally was the Metronome.

Hey, Mike, Nice work on this cool tribute to a great classic! I really like the tone of the wailing electric guitar parts and think it's really cool how you used the actual clips from the radio and news broadcasts. You also did a very impressive job playing all the instrumental parts and staying true to the original. Like Bub and Herb mentioned, I'd try high pass filtering the bass guitar anywhere from 45hz to as high as even 60hz, to remove some of the boominess. You'd be surprised how much low end mud you can pull out of a bass and actually gain better definition of the sound. Not sure how to unhide tracks in X2 (I'm still on 8.5), but on 8.5 pressing the "M" key brings up the track manager with check boxes for hiding/unhiding, and pressing the "A" key shows all hidden tracks. Hope that helps! Great work, Mike, excellent job on this! Bob

Thanks Bob Ill give that a try on filtering the Bass. I have 8" monitors but I think I need a sub to hear the lows better LOL Appreciate the advise Wookie hooked me up on the hidden track thing, X1 I think it was H and then check the box marked something about Sync.

Mike - I liked it. The only thing that struck me was that the lead guitar part should be louder, especially at the begining, as it gets a little buried. The vocals sound great as does the acoustic guitars.

People don't realize how big this thing was... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Edmund_Fitzgerald 729 feet long. Went down with all hands in a gale. Probably split in two. I think this will benefit from some snap treatment, there are definite timing anomalies on your acoustic. Sounds good though.

Thanks Wook, Shawn, Eric & B19 Yeh Im fighting the Snap thing trying to figure out if its Audio Snap prob or a setting in Prefs. Cant get it to hit on the transients like I would like to clear that up. I do hear them as well and am trying to get some help advise upstairs with it.

Hey Mike, sorry I haven't got around to listening to this until now. I hadn't forgotton though and thank you for your message the other week, it's nice to know I was missed. Ok this is interesting, I don't know what you are trying to achieve. It all sounds nice, although I would say it not the sort of sound I would aim for, the acoustic is a little clangy and I can hear the audio snap in places too. Ok the voice has just come it, now I am likeing it more. I know of Mr Lightfoot all though he does bring back bad memories of my mothers deadbeat husband. Ok it sounds really good, although the clangy acoustic guitar is somewhat off puting and it doesn't seem to go anywhere, this would be my only complaint. Nice work though. Peace Ben

Thanks Janet I love this song and was hoping to do it some sort of Justice with my limited ability I just updated it today but am unable to crank up my monitors to check it, not sure but I think the drums might be hitting a smidge hard I did do alot of adjusting on the HPF on the bass and the kick. Kick has some wetness to it I believe causing a little muddyness. Not sure

Mike I see you've already been thru a few changes and it's really a wonderful piece of work - for my part, it was way too long to get to hear the vocals. I'd cut back the clips but for sure keep the endings mentioning the Fitzgerald by name, etc. Just thought it was too long leading up to the song lyric. Wonderful though - truly brings back tons of memories, and I've actually been to Duluth MN and Superior, and know the history here. An incredible tribute, and darn if I could just play guitars like that....? wow oh wow. I don't even know how you put this together with Gordon's vocals but - whew. Not many words come to mind except - Awesome. - John
