Got To Go Away -Pop/Rock- critique welcome
Here is one of my newer songs "Got to Go Away" This tune tries to capture that unsettled feeling all of us get, when we would just like to move on. Please critique at will. Suggestions regarding the mix are especially welcome! Note: An older version of this song exists on my Soundclick site. Please use the above Soundcloud link to get at the latest version. Thanks-

Very nice song! Your mix is pretty crispy, which makes it kind of hard to listen to for very long. I'd tone down the high frequency EQ boosts, and think about bringing some low end into the mix. The bass is there as an instrument, but it isn't really playing that role in the mix. Kick is almost inaudible. Finally, if you are going to do a sax solo, you should consider using a good quality sax library. Sax is one of the hardest instruments to "fake", so it always sounds obvious when people try it. If it were me, I might use a different instrument instead. Regards, Dan

Good song and performance - I really like the backing vocals. As Dan says, there is way to much on the high end of the eq and no bass or middle.

Nice song, very '60's sounding. Harmonies are very well arranged. As Dan said, it's a very brittle sounding mix. Not sure about the MIDI guitar(?), that sounds out of place to me. Those tom fills are cutting though (too much) whereas the rest of the drums are pretty inaudible. The last minute or so seemed a bit superfluous in a tightly written song, it didn't really add anything to the tune.

Thanks for the replies. I actually took out some bass before sending to Soundcloud. I will add it back in, and look at the high end. I will revisit all the EQ. I also think the overheads - especially the sizzle ride - might be adding too much clutter at the high end. I, too, think the toms are a bit loud - but wanted to hear what the forum had to say. I have been thinking about doing something different for the last minute...more diversity. What I have right now is a bit of a boring place holder waiting for a better idea. I will look for a better sax. I am currently using TTS-1.

I didn't read any of the previous comments. Some fine arrangement on this one -- and I like the background vocals a lot. This sounds like an Association album cut -- which is good to me. I'm hearing that the drums need to come way up in the mix. And, overall the mix needs some eq tweaking as some clarity gets lost in places. It seems with all the nifty things going on here that the mix is not up to par -- it needs to be fuller and punchier if that makes sense. (Oh, the only big crit was that I didn't like the sound of the instrumental section -- use a guitar maybe?) Good creative stuff :) Allan ====

really nice arrangement and performances! toms could come down a little - or give them a little less "room" or verb. could use a little low end boost love those BGVs! excellent!

I'm getting a bit of a late 60's/early 70's vibe from this one, like The Association as Allan mentioned. Very cool. Everything is played well and the harmonies are particularly nice. But mix-wise I'd agree with the above comments - it's a bit thin and crispy, needs more meat. Oh... for the sax part, if you don't have a suitable replacement perhaps a B3 instead?

Thanks for the comments so far, guys. I hope to have the new mix posted in a couple days. I listened to the sax again soloed...and I don't know how I passed that onto the final mix! Not too good. I think I am going to try the Dimension Pro tenor. Interesting concept going to the B3...That would require a re-write. I may try it, though. The Association? Groovy!

Yes, The Association comes to mind immediately. I like them (in fact I saw them live on Long Island last year), it's a good thing. Great arrangement, excellent playing. Vocal harmonies are really well thought out and executed. I'd like to heard more bass drum with the bass locked in tight - but other than that it's very cool. Super job.
