Got myself a water purifyer and some survial books
It's real easy to blow off disaster preperation because their are always more fun things to do or buy (like new music gear !!!) But it's better to have it and not need it than need it or not have it. I'm not planning on going all crazy, and building underground bunkers or anything. But I am going to make sure I have the supplies in place so in case something happens, my family will be taken care of. Anyone else ready for the end of the world? Or just a natural disaster?

Digging my secret bunker right now.... Mat, you are wise to prepare for disasters. You buy insurance for your car and your house even though you don't plan on being in an accident or having the house burn down, and we don't think twice about paying that bill every year. So my thought is..... buy a water filter, and some long term storable food and consider it as an insurance policy. If you ever need it you can be assured the investment will seem very wise. Did you buy that one that filters water from mud puddles and streams and makes it drinkable? I'm expecting an email today or tomorrow telling me they are back in stock and my order goes in ASAP. ($300 +/-) I know, from living in NC, when a hurricane comes through, things get disrupted for a few days.... what if it was a few weeks or longer? The stores in the USA only operate on a 2 day supply. Conspiracy theory here: What if some terror group was successful in hitting a number of the key electrical switching/sub stations in the USA? How long would the power be down? Weeks? Months? How would life look here with no electricity? No electricity also means, no heat, no AC, no gas pumps working, no food in stores, no clean water in the tap, no radio, no telephone, no cells, kinda like the 1800's all over again. BTW: if you're looking for food at a good price, check Sam's Club and Costco. Both have 1 year supply for 1 person (6 month for 2 etc) for under $1000 currently... I'm betting that will go up very soon. 25 yr shelf life for long term storage. No matter what the reason, if the stores are empty, you have food and water. Trucker strike, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, financial meltdown ...... what ever the reason or cause of the disaster, you need food and water. I also recommend: a reliable weapon or two, a solar battery charger, a short wave radio...... and if you really wanna get bugged out, a radiation detection meter. I have a number of these things in place already and am working on those I don't have in place. Also planning to plant a garden (larger than last years) on some land my mother in law has. Potatoes, beans, corn, things that keep well and can be dried for storage. Almost forgot: duct tape and rope

I ordered Polar Pure Water Disinfectant With Iodine Crystals (chemical treater) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00068M3HY First Need XL Water Filter/Purifier (1 filter/purifier) (mechanial treater) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009RP8T2 Plus a couple of books SAS Survival Handbook, Revised Edition: For Any Climate, in Any Situation http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061733199 Crises Preparedness Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide to Home Storage and Physical Survival http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0936348070 I like your idea about the 1 year supply of food, I didn't know they sold those. I was thinking about just coming up with a food rotation system for our commonly used things. Of course guns and ammo are crucial too. I don't think we have enough of either. I think your other ideas are good to. We're really not talking about a lot of money. And if you go camping etc (which we do on occasion) you can still get some use out of this stuff. Like you said, it's just a bit of insurance.

Nope. If it's full on nuclear disaster, we are probably toast anyway. I used to have a chem suit when in the army, but I don't know what happened to it.

Here's the Food link they do have smaller kits for less cost but the best deal cost to food is the one year kit. look around. At Sam's Club & Costco the food kit is less then half the cost direct from the mfg. 15 boxes with 6 #10 sealed cans..... just add clean water and cook.

Cool, ty. I will talk it over with my wife and it wouldn't suprise me if we don't get a kit now, and then maybe a second later. 2k would be hard to drop at once (especially before I get my UAD 2 quad, lol). Plus, I really need to get a rifle of some sort I think. I normally don't hunt, but I could/would if needed.

guns are always a good thing.... for hunting small game, a 22 or even some of the new airguns by GAMO are freaking amazing...and quiet too. handy in a populated area. self defense... I like a tactical shotgun and/or a pistol of 9mm or larger.... revolver or semi auto is fine. practice a lot.

I haven't practiced in years, but I was expert with both 9mil and m16 when in the army. I'd imainge I'm a little rusty, but could probably still hit what I intend too. Good point on the 22. A 300mag might be fine for a deer, but wouldn't leave much from a rabbit.

I have been contemplating a solar battery charging system... A few 15 or 20 watt panels connected to a battery charger and a 12v deep discharge battery.... that runs a 1kw to 2kw voltage converter to run a few small electrical devices.... I still need to calculate a few things and the converter wattage is one of the main things. If it is bigger (requires a bigger battery ) it might even be able to run a small refrigerator on a continuing basis. Northern Tool & Equipment, and a couple of hundred bucks you can build one better and cheaper than the ones you see advertised on the net or TV....

Yeah, I saw something like this http://www.powerenz.com/store/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=1 But $1500 seems awefully pricy. I would imagine you are paying a premium for the easy setup. I figure really the most important thing to run would be your fridge. Followed by radio, cell phone etc. Ideally the end goal for my wife and I, is to get a ranch somewhere that is fully off grid. But that's still a ways away.

If you go to the Northern folks, you can build a decent solar charging system with a converter for $600 to $1000 depending of the charging wattage and the AC power output. Obviously, the more power you want at the output the more it will cost, but those pre-made solar kits are a rip off. You can build one equivalent to the ones I initially looked at for $500 or so, and get more wattage out. All you need are a few solar panels>>>> a charge controller rated for the panels >>>>>>> a decent 12v battery to charge >>>>>> and a 120v inverter rated at the wattage you want out. When we have a hurricane, I run a 4500w generator. Since I don't know how long the power will be out I try to conserve the fuel. So I run the gen a few hours and turn it off. And alternate this manner until the power comes back or I run out of fuel. By keeping the refrigerator door closed, the fridge can actually perform quite well even making ice. the ice cream gets a bit soft but beside that, it's a doable thing. To size the system correctly, you must start with the power of the inverter that you need, then working backwards size the battery, and lastly the panels. You have to calculate the amp hours of the battery and the charging current of the panels to get the components sized correctly. Many of the web sites that deal in this equipment also have hand charts to help you get the right size parts. If you do a little bit of research and are willing to do a little bit of work, you can save some big bucks in the end.

I've been practicing walking slowly, with both arms out in front of me, while moaning in an obnoxious manner. I don't want to be one of those zombies who doesn't respect the classics. Oh, and be sure to include an extra set of prescription glasses in your bunker. Remember that Twilight Zone episode with the guy who wanted to spend his time reading? The world ended, he was alone with a library full of books, and then he broke his glasses. Fun times...

@Guitar Hacker, yes, I was thinking $1500 was a bit pricey. I had looked into builing a system before for my wife's horse barn. She's actually got one out there right now, but it needs to be totally redone. Batteries are fried etc. @ Bristol, well if we stay in our house, we have a whole wall of book cases so we are covered there. I guess it really depends on what type of disaster it is. If it's just your regular earthquake etc, then yes we would stay put. If it's your end of the world disaster scenario (say collapse of the dollar/government) then we would get together with my parents (just a couple of blocks away) and try and head back into the mountains (we have a friend with property in the Los Padres near Figureoa Mountain). Of course before all this happens it would be really nice to get a number 1 song, and make a million or two so I could build my own ranch/bunker, lol.

I'm watching all the hype and fear on this nuke situation.... it's sad. The key to survival in any situation is to remain calm, think clearly, and be prepared. Just out of curiosity, I went to Ebay a few minutes ago. I guess about 5 or 6 months ago I was looking around on Ebay at radiation meters..... at the time they were averaging between $75 to $150 dollars for the small hand held models.... these same ones today are $450 to $500+ ...with no bids.... oh yeah, and free shipping.
