Got new Audio/Midi Interface, now for cables, any help?

Well as some of you may know, i purchased an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R.
My only problem now is the fact that i've just realised that i have no patch cables here or balanced jack to jack leads other than ultra long one's i use for my bass and for passing signals down long lengths of cable.

My question is this.....what branded cables should i be looking at, are there any that perform better than others or is it just the same as everything else....one mans drink is another mans poison?
Should i just buy some Cordial Cable and solder up some leads with neutrik stereo jacks?

I was also wondering if using just standard balanced patch leads would get the job done, obviously i want to make sure the sound quality is as clean and buzz free as possible going into my samson servo, before hitting the monitors. So any suggestions of leads that i can purchase in the UK would be a great help. For the time being, im gonna get this biatch installed and pop me headphones on lol.

If you are handy with a soldering iron make them just the length you need. I use Mogami Mogami W2549 for all my balanced hookup or mic cables.

Here is a link to where I get the cable, they have the ends there also.

    These plugs look nice..

Yup was looking at those connectors mate, think that may well be a purchase.
Only thing i cannot find however is that cable over here in the uk. Just done a search on google and its mainly US or Aus, nowhere in the uk that sells it then?

Canare Star Quad, Mogami Neglex, doesn't really matter, both are good quality.

Making it yourself is probably the best way to go. I haven't bought a pre-made cable in 10 years.

If you can't find either in the UK, maybe you can find Gepco or Beldin mic cables. They are a fine substitute. All have similar price and performance stats.

Cheers, just found a place called Canfords, they supply the BBC with thier cable n such. So i may opt for the Canford Starquad which is £0.93 per metre for 100mtr

Don't you have a musicians friend equivalent in the UK? I know there is a couple of big stores there on line. IMHO making your own cables is a pain, there is such a huge choice out there (low medium and high quality) in all kinds of lengths - many with a lifetime warranty.

I would rather leave the soldering to someone who does it day in day out (or a machine) Trying to do a neat job over and over with good clean solder joints and nice trimming etc.... forget it. e.g. I just bought some Audio Technica mic cables for stage use (premium series with genuine Neutrik connectors) and there is no way I could have made them for the same price!

Most 'mid range' 'name' brands are fine for hobbyist's (I've always found Hosa to be perfectly acceptable for many applications example).

Just keep the lengths as short as poss. and use balanced when able. There are some special situations where you might find yourself doing some soldering, I don't know what kind of set up you are planning.

    Good luck

Ideally for the moment i only want 16 x 12" balanced patch leads. (trs-trs)
But i will later, when out on the road require 16 x 1m balanced patch leads (trs-trs)

Soldering isn't a problem, made plenty of good leads in the past, just aint done it for over 8 years lol.
Also, being a tattoo artist, sometimes i solder up my own special needle groupings for large scale custom work, the soldering on those has to be very neat otherwise they go to ****e.

I used to use these guys at one time: http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/AP-Audio-APC12S-12-Stereo-Patch-Cable-10Pack?sku=420205

I'm sure you can get 'em in the UK somewhere. That's 32 plugs to solder! I'm sure you have better things to do with your time!!

That Canford site looked like they had some good stuff but it was really hard to find stuff 'cos of the web site layout!

    These for example: http://www.canford.co.uk/Products/43-9506.aspx
although very expensive! I saw some cheaper ones there but can't find them now.

I prefer making my own audio cables, using Mogami cable and Neutrik connectors. If you're good with a soldering iron, you can make custom lengths and be confident in every solder joint. I enjoy doing the work myself, knowing that any problems will be my own doing. I learned the hard way in RF work to not scrimp when it comes to cable and connectors, especially in outdoor applications. No need for the esoteric boutique stuff -- just use good quality material like Mogami, Belden, Neutrik, Amphenol -- and you won't go wrong.

I know the difference between speaker cable & instrument cable. But I feel that this knowledge has made me dangerous! I need ¼" unbalanced from my audio card to my mixer external in. WHat type of cable should I use?

Will this do the job: http://www.zzounds.com/item--MONMSLM are there better choices? Thanks.

EDIT: Also, what type of cable do I use from my mixer main outs to my active monitors? Again, ¼" unbalanced is what I need, but is a std instrument cable what I need or something else?

I don't think anyone here will want to get involved in any discussion about Monster Cable products. Just use standard instrument cables from Cordial or similar.

To the OP, take a look at the Thomann site. 6 TRS cables 300mm long for UKP 8.50!

    Here's a link.

Why do you need unbalanced cable? Your mixer inputs and outputs to you monitors should all be balanced TRS. In any case you can use any standard 1/4" or TRS cables. They almost all use 24 gauge stranded "oxygen free" wire. Brands like Canare or Mogami will be better because they use a greater number of finer strands in their cable for flexibility and resistance to breaking, they also have much stronger sleeves with resist breaking and stretching.

Thanks. My mixer has balanced main outs, but the control room & studio outs are both unbalanced. My aux send & returns are unbalanced too, which is more of a challenge.

The unbalanced cables I've seen seem to be more expensive than balanced. Probably because they need more shielding. Anywho, I'll probably pick some up at zzounds.

Maybe you do need to become a Monster Cable customer after all.
