Aren't these the same ones also sold under the name "Beats by Dr. Dre"?

On a side note, not necessarily about these headphones, but when did headphones become an accessory. That's the impression I always get from Best Buy, that the headphones are more about how they look.

I now see lots of people walking around with fullsized headphones instead of earbuds.

So I guess for those it's as much a fashion statement as it is about having good sound and they might take into consideration how they look.

I'm always open to new things or changed things... but I cannot ever imagine Monster making studio-worthy headphones created for the sound engineer with a near perfect flat response.  I own two Beats by Dre cans by Monster (one white and one black) and yes, they are more accessory than they are studio tools.  They sound great, honestly, but are extremely colored and biased on certain frequencies.  But maybe the new product line is different so I'll stay open until I get a chance to hear them myself when compared to my Sony and Sennheiser studio cans.

    THESE are my favorite headphones.
I do use the earbuds that came with my iPod as a reference knowing that a high percentage of people actually have and use these for listening.
But to actually track and mix with? No, never.

I do own quite a few Monster Cable mic cables but after reading about their business practices I have since switched to purchasing Mogami when I need cables.
I no longer support Monster in any way.

    That's just my 3 1/2 cents.

are they "open back" or "close back" I ask because I mix with headphones and I use AKG K240's they are "semi" open back. what I've seen is the open back H/P's are real expensive.

Closing off the back side of the speakers to the outside necessarily requires acoustical compromises that guarantee uneven frequency response, which is why open-back headphones are preferred when greater accuracy is needed. They also tend to be at the upper end of the price spectrum, not because open-back headphones are more expensive to manufacture, but because they assume that consumers who buy them are a) more discerning of quality and b) willing to pay more for it. They tend to have little details like metal hinges and detachable cables that add to the cost.

The most popular headphones you see people walking around with are definitely not high-fidelity transducers suitable for critical listening. But they aren't just fashion statements, either. The appeal, I think, is the improved bass response and greater isolation compared to stock earbuds. The Beats by Dre class of headphones are bass-hyped, making them unreliable as primary studio references. But they'd probably be useful as secondary references, to hear what your mix sounds like on that type of headphone.

For myself, I am very happy to see the trend toward higher-fidelity headphones among young people. It might not be the listening experience I'd prefer for myself, but it's a huge step up from those crappy plastic earbuds that come with iPods! Many become accustomed to highER quality sound, and then start questioning low-bitrate MP3s. I'm surprised at how many teenagers actually know about the existence of the FLAC alternative now.

Everybody here can do one thing to help save the next generation from sonic mediocrity: make a point of sitting at least one teenager down and making them put on your best studio headphones for a listen. Watch their eyes widen. You've just broadened their world view! Then hide your headphones so they don't steal them.
