Gotta admit I'm sick of Sonar crashing whenever I open the master ProChannel
This seems to happen to every project after it gets to a certain age. I click to open the master ProChannel on the console, and Sonar just hangs. I don't have any 32-bit plugs in there, no sussppiicciiious freeware plugs either. Just an instance of Guitar Rig with a compressor, and standard ProChannel modules. That's all I use. When it happens I know I have little chance of ever being able to open it again in the console, so I have to open it in the inspector. Not the end of the world, but pretty annoying and of course these little things just make you feel on edge about the general stability of the program when you're working with it.

I think the ProChannel probably needs some TLC from the bakers. It's not just the hangs, there are annoying little things about some of the ProChannel modules that need to be addressed. For instance, the clip light on the FX Chain module doesn't work. I could use that, I make use of those lights a lot when gain staging. And sometimes other module's clip lights will just randomly stop working.

Not sure what you mean by "certain age" but I have a project that is over two months old and I just opened up console view, inserted GR5 on a bus and opened ProChannel on that bus. No problems. Anything I'm misunderstanding? Disclaimer, since I have a control surface, I NEVER use console view and so Pro Channel for me is always accessed via inspector in TV. So I might not understand exactly what the steps are to reproduce this behavior. I'd like to try though.

Hi Bapu, By "certain age" I mean that when I start a project everything's OK with the master ProChannel for a while, but there comes a point after which these crashes start to happen. Maybe it's Native Instruments related -I am partial to using their Solid Bus Comp on the master ProChannel. . I've talked before about issues that Sonar seems to have with NI stuff, specifically opening projects with NI plug dials turned all the way to the left. It happens for me almost every time with this Solid Bus Comp and I've gotten used to going straight to the master ProChannel to set it up as soon as I open the project. I recently updated everything NI related but this particular problem remains. But of course I have no idea whether or not it's related to these crashes.

I too have had crashes using guitar rig. Not in X2, but then again I have used it sparingly since I had several crashes in X1. I don't think this is PC problem. I use PC on everything, including the master with a well stocked fxchain to boot.

If it is a Guitar Rig problem then I hope Cakewalk are looking into possible compatibility/stability issues with Native Instruments stuff (and the other way round). They're a huge vendor.

I often start with presets in Guitar Rig, some of the effects chains are excellent. However I usually tweak them a lot. However if you have Komplete then it comes with a huge bunch of extra effects, all the Traktor effects and vintage compressors (in Ultimate) etc. And the sucky thing is that they are all hosted in Guitar Rig, with the exception of 3 of their vintage compressors which they recently upgraded to standalone. About the only compressor preset I ever use is the "mix glue" one on their Solid Bus Comp, which nearly always works great for me. But when I load the project, even though the preset name is showing in the preset selector, all the dials are still zeroed until I go into the preset dropdown and select it again.

No problems with Gtr rig for me but I do get the console crash from time to time. The workaround is when Console is crashing your project, shut down Sonar...Then Restart it AND DONT TOUCH ANYTHING, hit save, exit Sonar and then fire it back up again. Console then works again. This works for me, hope it does for you too.

Guitar Rig has lots of PDC needs... and when you switch through presets the PDC factor is changing on the fly. Many of the emulation efx use convolution math which can take a long time to process... the better sounding stuff taps the PDC too. SONAR gets flaky when you require it's PDC feature to actually do it's PDC thing. It works... but it's flaky. If you wrap your head around the fact that the PDC makes it flaky then a lot of stuff starts to make sense and you can adapt a work flow that let's you avoid most of SONAR's flaky stability. I use a SONAR that is 99.99% stable... but I know what SONAR can't do so I don't do it even if the Cakewalk manual says that SONAR supposed to be able to do it.

Perhaps Cakewalk should issue a second X2 manual describing the functions that don't work and how to go about not using them. This would be very useful for noobs like me.

An awareness of what kicks the PDC in is a good first start. Each user will benefit from knowing what stuff they are using that utilizes the PDC. As I suggest... once you do that... a lot of stuff starts to make sense and you can see the cause and effect in your work flow and then adapt. all the best, mike

CakeAlexS Works for me. Update guitar rig software and sound device drivers. I'm sure you've done this already Sharke, but Alex is right about the Guitar Rig update. When Guitar Rig 4 first came out, it did have some problems that were fixed with an update. I use Guitar Rig 4 Pro extensively. I use it on Vocals, Drums, Guitar, Bass. I haven't had a crash with GR4 since the first update, and I think there were 3 after that IIRC. I'm not doing the 'it works for me' thing, you know me way better than that. What I am saying is, I have seen problems with GR4, and I was able to fix them with an update, but that was quite some time ago. .......................... I too have also seen problems with projects going bad after a certain age. One thing that helped was using Auto-Save, and every once in a while, opening up the Auto-Save file, then saving it as the main project name, thus overwriting the main project while not losing any work. Hope that makes sense. You have to be quick about it, if you open up the Auto-Save project, then you'll have an Auto-Save copy of an Auto-Save file, and the file names get really long and confusing. You have to do this from the very beginning of the project ... if you have an existing project and then turn on Auto-Save, you're just copying the problem, if that makes any sense. It sounds like a pain, but it's not a big deal at all really. Good luck!

It seems to do all its math within the host's buffers. It can easily use up my old-ish CPU, but does not need PDC ever.
