Graphic representation of recorded audio missing in some Sonar 6 tracks
As the title says, I am unable to see the graphic representation of recorded audio waveform in some tracks. The tracks are there, and I can hear them, just no visual representation, which makes editing difficult. Some tracks do show a graphic of the recorded audio, but some don't. All were recorded at 44.1khz, 16 bit. Can anyone here think of a reason why this is happening, and how I might be able to get the waveforms to reappear? The tracks all showed the graphic representation at the time when they were recorded, but later some did not show when the project file was reloaded. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

rickoff I am unable to see the graphic representation of recorded audio waveform in some tracks. The tracks are there, and I can hear them, just no visual representation, which makes editing difficult. Some tracks do show a graphic of the recorded audio, but some don't. Do these blank clips display the word "Busy"? If so, then this is a well-known bug in Sonar. Find the file AUD.ini and open it for editing, then alter the value of the parameter "PicCacheMB" to a higher number. This should make the audio clips display properly.

Hi Kev, and thanks for the response. No, the blank clips are simply labeled Record 1, Record 6, or whatever. I found the AUD.ini file in C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Sonar 6 Producer Edition directory, but it has no PicCacheMB entry. Here's what it currently states: ---------------------- [Aud] DataDir=C:\Cakewalk Projects\Audio Data PictureDir=C:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache [Wave] DefaultSampleRate=44100 ----------------------- Hmmm, I thought I'd try editing the AUD.ini file to add the PicCacheMB data, but it wouldn't let me save the file, so I went to Command Prompt to open the file in an EDIT window, and found a whole lot more lines there, including these three: PicCacheMB=500 PicCacheZoom=128 PicCacheLevels=2 Now 500MB would seem more than adequate, as the Picture Cache file folder is currently only 127MB in size. But if more is better, I figured it wouldn't hurt to change the parameter value to 700MB, so did that and then went to save the file, but it showed the error message: "Edit was unable to create or access the file [followed by the file path]." I then attempted to run Command Prompt in Administrator Mode to edit the AUD.ini file, and to my surprise it only showed the same three parameters that I had originally found. Going back to a non Administrator Mode Command Prompt to reopen an EDIT on AUD.ini I again see just the same 3 parameters, rather than the long list seen before. Rather weird, huh? Further, I looked in the C:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache directory, and there are many WTR and WOV files in there, including ones that represent the track waveforms I cannot view. For example, the listings for the lead vocal track are: Galway-Girl---new---Vocal---Julie—Rec—845—1cd47fda1c0a204.WOV and .WTR (504kb and 10kb respectively.) So these aren't just empty files, and I'm stumped, as this makes no sense to me that the graphics files are present but the tracks appear empty.

Select all the affected clips, right-click on one of them and select Clip Properties. Go to the Audio Files tab and click the button labeled "Recompute Pictures".
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

You can find your picture folder and erase all the pictures in it, SONAR will re-draw the waveforms when you open the project. I don't know if it's different in 6, in version 8 'options' --> 'global' --> 'audio data' will show the picture folder if you don't know where it is. Sometimes if I just need a quick fix I'll bounce the audio ('bounce to clips' fucntion) and it will redraw the waveform. To not answer your question, I have no idea why it happens.

Or what bitflipper said sounds much easier.

Here's something else strange. I just went to my Cakewalk Projects folder, clicked on the folder name for the project I am currently working on (C:\Cakewalk Projects\Galway Girl - new) and then clicked on the project file (Galway Girl - new.cwp). I noticed that for a brief instant a Windows error message appears before the project opens and obscures it, so I minimized the project window to read the error message, which says, "Windows cannot find C:\Cakewalk Projects\Galway Girl - new.cwp Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." How weird is that?! Why would I even get an error message saying Windows cannot find the file I clicked on when it obviously has found and opened it?

@ bitflipper: There is no "Recompute Pictures" button on the Clip Properties Audio Files tab.

@ Matt: Yes, the Options/Global/Audio Data tab does show the pictures location, which is C:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache, and as I stated in an earlier post, I did find WOV and WTR file pairs present there for each of the tracks that appear blank with no waveform shown. Per your suggestion, should I delete all the WOV and WTR files associated with the current project, or just the picture files, which I assume are the WOV files since they are much larger than the WTR files?

@ Matt: Just tried your "Edit/Bounce to clips" suggestion, and that worked fine. Thanks!

It is safe to delete all the WOV and WTR folders in that folder.... SONAR will re-create them when you open a project, and it doesn't take any noticeable amount of time. I think there is a reason that you want to delete these from time to time but I forget what it is (I'm not much on technical stuff). I seem to recall it can cause problems when it gets too big. Personally I delete the contents everytime it gets to about ~15,000 files.
