Very nice indeed! Great work, and thanks for sharing :)

[Edit: Having made some PRV colors themable in the latest update, I intend to add a few more UI elements soon, including the Synth Rack. No promises, but I'll try to get at least some improvements into the next release if possible.]

Will this work in Bandlab?  BTW did anyone request the theme editor as a request for the Bandlab version? I remember when this came out for Sonar people were nuts about it.

We released Cakewalk Theme Editor earlier today (04/28/2018), which is a new app designed to work specifically with Cakewalk by BandLab (SONAR Theme Editor, which only works with SONAR, is still available if you need it).

It forms part of a larger update, which includes new versions of BandLab Assistant, Cakewalk by BandLab, and plenty of bug fixes, among other things.

Full release notes can be found towards the end of this post:

Where are the themes now stored under SPLAT a folder was created under Cakewalk Content and in a folder Cakewalk Themes.
I don't see that under cakewalk core and the only the two default themes are showing under preferences. Had loads more before with splat.

Good question. Since Cakewalk by BandLab and SONAR are separate products, as are Cakewalk Theme Editor and SONAR Theme Editor, we decided to have them load/save themes from different folders.

The old version, SONAR Theme Editor, stores themes here by default:
C:\Cakewalk Content\SONAR Themes\

However, Cakewalk Theme Editor stores themes here by default:
C:\Cakewalk Content\Cakewalk Themes\

You're free to copy/move theme files between the two folders, and use them in CbB and/or SONAR.

Tip: Themes are backward/forward compatible to some extent, but to avoid potential compatibility issues, we recommend updating old SONAR Themes for use in CbB like so:

1. Open Cakewalk Theme Editor.
2. Open the old SONAR theme you want to update, which is likely stored in C:\Cakewalk Content\SONAR Themes\.
3. Click the 'Save As' button, and save it to C:\Cakewalk Content\Cakewalk Themes\.
4. Open CbB, and you should be able to select the theme in Preferences -> Themes.

Thanks John! I've been around for a while, but haven't been particularly active on the forum lately (which might explain why my name isn't familiar to you).

Some background if you're interested...

As a long term Cakewalk user and pro software developer, I wrote a utility called SONAR Plus back in 2010, which went down pretty well on the forums. Cakewalk noticed, so I started contracting for them in 2011, and went full time the following year.

Since then, I worked on SONAR for the most part, until things went south last November. Fortunately, Meng was kind enough to offer me a position at BandLab, so here I am!

I wrote the original Theme Editor, and spent some time updating it for CbB recently - hence my posts here today. :)

Re: Green Glow Theme Updated 2018/04/29 01:00:20 (permalink)
I think you did a great job with theme editor. When I created a whole new Control bar, instead of modifying the colours, it gave me a massive appreciation for how much the application had to cover.  I learnt a few tricks along the way, and this was something I new little about when I started. I've mentioned before that I think the App is 98% there. And to have done that in the first release is impressive.  There is so much making up a theme, and to make an app that captures all those attributes is seems a mission to me.

I didn't know that you had developed it. I had wrongly thought it has been a 3rd party and long suspected that as that had been seen as completed, we would get n further developments. After a week creating this, and hit a few small hurdles that put me off doing another in a different stye, but I as got a bug fr it and really fancy anther go. So you have given me some optimism.

I always get the impression users think it just changes colurs, but it capable of much more.

Re: Green Glow Theme Updated 2018/04/29 04:18:55 (permalink)
Thanks. I wanted to try a brushed metal effect, and go for a realistic (what's that wprd again Sharke?) look. Someone else was doing an Ableton style, that was popular, but I don't know if it got finished.

I definitely get it why it's s hard the developer to create a GUI to keep everyone happy, but there is so much potential for users to do it. I had hoped for a separate to discuss ideas, share ides and resources. It would be great if BandLAb provided all the icons as a library. Removing button backgrounds, was a bit labourious. Being able t copy whole folders from one theme editor to another would be great too. Helping mix mix and match themes. Element by element is slow and I'm a bit clumsy.

I always wanted to revisit Theme Editor, which has been stuck at v1 for too long.

TranceCanada, Kamikaze, and others, have inspired me to make time for it. I can't promise anything (there's so much going on at the moment), but I hope to make some small, but significant improvements over the coming months. Keep an eye on the release notes in upcoming releases.

Agree with Kami on this. I tried the theme editor when it first came out, but my lack of graphic experience made it very frustrating for me, so I gave up and waited for others to come up with something I liked and then I would edit that. But even that approach had me bogged down.

And like Kami says, it's really hard to please everyone. There is no theme that I like totally. So if I could work on my own theme that would be the ideal thing.

Good luck Ben. Keep us informed.

I love the themes. I also like that I can make tiny tweaks to them to fit my needs.

For example, I like polar blue theme but it didn't have stark enough resolution on the processors for me (so I could make sure I don't over drive the first while playing).

I made a quick tweak and it looks wonderful.

Thank you for this great gift. It makes Sonar totally fun for me.

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Good to know people are still making use of Theme Editor, but yes, always room for improvement.

Sadly, theming the CbB UI is by no means a quick and easy job. A basic understanding of at least one graphic design app is, unfortunately, a prerequisite. There's only so much we can do to make the process quicker and easier - short of rewriting most of the CbB UI code (but that's another story!).

That said, it's crying out for some obvious improvements here and there, so leave it with me. I'll try to sneak in some tweaks over the coming months.

ps. Thanks Bristol_Jonesey. Yes, still based in the UK (Midlands) :)

Good stuff there Kami. That's the biggest hurdle for me, figuring out where stuff is located. I think TV stuff should be in a TV folder of some sort, but all the elements of the GUI is all over the place!!
