Green Sleeves (2012) ((fixed a few issues))
(edited version is after post 25) the same link takes you to the new version. I recorded this last year, and since it's that Christmas season again..... I figured I''d get into the spirit of the season a bit by updating it. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11185701 In this version I added and changed up some of the guitar tracks and left others as they were in last years version. There are 8 guitar tracks.... twin clean.... twin not so clean.....two electric rhythm ...and 2 acoustic rhythm tracks..... and trying to keep it as uncluttered as possible with all those things in it. Then, as if that wasn't bad enough, I took upon myself the monumental task of playing the piano parts.....and trying to get them right. I need to spend more time on the piano.... and get a keyboard with weighted keys because this DS-27s is just too sensitive to the lighter touch of confused fingers. Anyway... have a listen and enjoy it. This is song ONE of THREE that I have ready for the holiday season... this is without a doubt the "heaviest" of the bunch.

This is great, herb. You would expect, or I would expect that many tracks to sound cluttered. This doesn't. Nice full sound, Herb!

Kev: Thank you Bill: On a Bose..... man I'll bet that sounded good... Lynn: I might make this an annual thing..... change this on a yearly basis... Warren: I was concerned with 8 guitar tracks.... that is a lot of guitar to make fit Robbie:..... hummmmm my favorite western star no doubt. EKO: yep.... piano is not my main instrument at all..... it's pretty much that way all the way through but I mentioned a while back to someone else here, I really needed to brush up my keyboard skill set.... and I have 2 songs now with piano in them....... you gotta wait for the next one. Mark: glad you like it Thank you all for listening.

Can't go wrong with one of the greatest melodies of all time! Love the organ and the harmonized double lead guitars. A little spring reverb would give the first verse a nice surf vibe. Not wild about the piano...maybe try rolling some low end off it, as it sounds a little muddy. Everything else is nicely balanced, good clarity and definition.

Something about the production gave me a soundtrack vibe from one of those old spaghetti westerns, but I like those? I think that shot was from "A fist full of dollars."

I love that 'Hank Marvin' style take on the melody at the beginning I also like the way you've switched the guitars around during the song some really nice changes in tones. That organ sound is to die for, I'm not wild about the piano sound it seems to want knocking back into the background more perhaps some verb to give it some distance from the listener as well as taking it down a few db. A really good take on an olde English folk tune. I thoroughly enjoyed that.

Robbie: ahhhh OK now I see... Ben: I'm glad it surprised you.... thanks Janet: Yeah.... piano.... uhhh, I almost decided not to include the piano track ...at least not MY piano track.... wink wink... the 1 minute mark... just my piano skills not matching to what the guitars were doing Beagle: glad you enjoyed it. The western sound I guess is the minor key combined with the bright Telecaster sound. Wirey little sucker.... The solo was the SG. Jonbouy: The B3.... I kept that track from the "last year" version..... it's a BB track... as is bass and drums.

Good Queen Bess gazes over the prairie, lights a cheroot, loosens her pistol and mutters "Cummon you Spaniard punks, make my day"! I am sure this is exactly how the composer wanted Greensleeves to sound, but could not find an electric socket to plug in his lute! Herb - a truly great piece of music.

Those parts sound better, Herb. I almost hesitate to say anything else, cause I can't really put my finger on it, but maybe lower the velocity on the keys? And many of the chords seem just milliseconds behind the beat, like you're hesitating. That could possibly be two easy fixes with the mouse. I was going to say that in each chord, every note has a different velocity, but since you actually played it and didn't input it with the mouse, then they probably do anyway, so that's not it. Anyway, that's just being picky and one of the few things I can sorta sound like I know what I'm talking about. The whole thing sounds great. :)

Sounds great, Herb. Janet may be on to something. I have a tendency to pound the keyboard when I'm playing piano, as if it were a real piano. Often I end up using the velocity offset slider to get a better tone and dynamics without having to re-play the part.

Thanks Bibs, Philz, Janet & Dave. On the piano parts.... it was played in by hand (mostly except for some limited editing) The keyboard I use is one of those really old, non-weighted Yamaha DX-27S synths. light touch, heavy touch doesn't matter because it's not touch sensitive. Most of the velocity is at 60. I edited a few places manually and those went in at 100 so I changed them to a much lower number. I have a radio shack something or other in the attic which I think has touch sensitivity but is still non-weighted. I have considered selling both and buying a weighted, touch sensitive keyboard. On the hesitation aspect. I basically redid the track using the piano midi solo as the foundation. The 16th staccato intro and other places where it occurs in the song were quantized to nail them to the beat. They had a tendency to drift noticeably before. I'm listening to this solo as I write this..... I hear, in a few places the very very slight "behind the beat" start of the chords and notes in a few places. I do know that I went through this last night before I reposted this updated version with the midi in Staff view to look at the music. In quite a few places the chord that was supposed to be on beat 1 in a given measure was actually about 1/32nd late...maybe 1/64th. I dragged a bunch of them to the 1. I also fixed other lagging notes in the same way. Even though you drag a note to the 1.... there is still a hidden factor that may come into play. In staff and PRV (I'm guessing on PRV) a note may show as being on 1, either naturally or dragged there..... BUT.... it's actual location may be at 1:058. That note would look like it's on 1:00 but unless it was edited in the note properties window, one would not know that. That small delay is noticeable to people who are listening for it.... but to the average listener, it goes mostly unnoticed. I have to work on another tune today so I will explore that detail on this song to see if that is what is still happening there....
