Groove Clip loop view - slicing. How do you do it?

In order to get rid of noise between guitar chords from the amplifier, I opened the track i Loop Construction View. I want cut it in slices but almost everything is greyed out. Why is that?

Isn't this where "Remove Silence" would come in handy? I have never used the Loop Construction View so I have nothing to offer there, sorry.

Might have better results using a gain envelop and/or the Sonitus Gate or ProChannel Expander/Gate.

You're just trying to crop out noise? I do that in the Track View.

Thank you guys. Yes, I do use the Sonitus Gate, effective but still...:-/

That is why I would try the clip gain first. You can get very good results with envelops. You really do not need a gate.

The Loop Construction view is for working with Groove clips (loops). It's not really used for audio editing. You're better off doing that directly in the track view. You can use a volume envelope to automate selections... see this video...
http://www.digifreq.com/digifreq/video.asp?ID=6

Or you can just split the clip into pieces and remove the pieces of noise. Position your mouse over the clip where you want to split it, hold Alt, and left-click to split with the Smart tool. You can also just click in the clip to place the Now time at the spot and press S to split.

That used to confuse me to. Double clicking on a wave opened the loop constructor which looks like a handy place to do basic editing... but alas it most certainly is not. ;-)

Thanks again! Yes, I probably split the track manually and delete those noisy sections.

But it SHOULD be.  IMHO, this is still a shortcoming of Sonar.  It cries out for a better wave editor.   I'm not saying a full-blown one, but a better one.
Yeah, you can connect to something like SoundForge, and yeah, you can do some edits in Track mode, but it could be more like Logic's Wave editor.

I'd be happy if we could edit in the main view of the tracks (with lanes closed). Not sure what's up with that.

"It cries out for a better wave editor." Couldn't point that out better myself. Cakewalk got something to learn from Cubase there...

Which is what made me think of the Remove Silence feature. Doesn't it remove silence and split the non-affected parts into separate clips?

Yes, that might work but I think he was after a more manual process. He's removing noise rather than silence, so getting the right settings might be tricky. I don't know for sure... it depends on the material being processed.

He said that he had already tried using a gate effect, but wasn't getting the results he wanted.

Well, a normal gate won't split a clip into several clips, like the OP wants, but the Remove Silence feature is supposed to... at least that's what I took from reading about it. But you're the expert so I'm sure I don't know what I'm talking about, as usual.

Audio Snap might be what you want to look at.

Hey Chappel... no, you're right. A gate won't split the clip and the Remove Silence feature might work if you can get the right settings. It just depends on the material because he's trying to remove noise rather than plain silence. It could possibly work though, so it's something worth trying.

I hope I didn't make it sound like I was dismissing your idea. I definitely wasn't doing that.

Yep, you can split on beats with AudioSnap as follows...

1. Change the Edit Filter for the track containing the audio to Audio Transients.
2. Change the Snap resolution to your split value (in this case 1/8).
3. Right-click the background of the audio and choose Pool > Add MBT to Pool.
4. Change the Edit Filter back to Clips.
5. Right-click the background of the audio and choose Split Clip(s) at AudioSnap Pool.

That should do it.

You have to do steps 1 and 3 again.

OR you can right-click the clip header and choose Split Clip(s) at AudioSnap Pool while the Edit Filter is still set to Audio Transients and then change the Edit Filter back to Clips.

There's a little quicker method with audiosnap as well.......

1. Change edit filter to "Audiosnap Transients"
2. Click on clip and open Audiosnap Palette if not already open(Press A)
3. Change resolution as required
4. Click on the "Split Clip into Beats" in the palette
5. Change filter back to clips

That's not a quicker method, it's a different method. It doesn't do the same thing as I described above. The method you described splits at the transient markers, not at the exact beats. The method I described uses the snap resolution to determine where splits will occur... on the exact beat no matter the location of the transient markers.

I assumed the OP was wanting to remove silence between the beats the transients are where he'd want the split to happen. Perhaps I'm confused about what he's trying to do.

You're right FBB. I did try both methods (also split clip into beats) and that finally crashed Sonar. I had to record many guitar pieces all over again :-( and ended up just using the sonitus gate anyway. The thing with slicing the clips was to make the duration of the guitar chords even but I gave that up...

The end chord from the guitar couldn't fade out because of the gate but that's another problem. Have to check my guitar cords and connections.
