Guides to understanding effects?

Hello,
I am curious to know if anyone here knows of a places thats has information on using effects i.e eq, compression.
I would just like to have a better understanding of things, and how to utilize them properly.

Thanks.

Mixing Audio by Roey Izhaki. The chapter on compressors is a highlight.

Not as technical but a pleasant read and a gentle introduction: Sound FX by Alexander Case.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    +1

Great explanation on dynamic manipulation (so compressors, limiters, expanders, gates etc). Highly recommended.
