Guitar, Microphone, Computer Setup

Hey guys,
I have a new guitar coming in later this week and I’m trying to set up something on my computer where I can play around with guitar rig, play along to backtracks, and also loop/record.  I am not interested in professional sounding recording… I just want to be able to play – but with good sound.
I've been reading about this stuff all day - but I'm still confused :confused:
Here is what I have:

M-audio fast-track usb

Guitar Rig 1 Control

Software:
Ableton Live
Guitar rig 3

I am also planning on grabbing a pair of studio monitors ... I'm looking at m-audio AV 40's..
Also, I'm wondering if I need a small mixer - maybe just a 4 channel.  Not sure if I need this or not.
I'm basically wondering how I set this up...
Guitar -> m-audio fast track USB -> Laptop ...
m-audio fast track -> speakers
Where does the foot controller fit in?
Also, what if I want to sing along while I play.  The m-audio fast track has a guitar AND microphone input.  Can I use both at the same time?  or do I need a mixer?  I'd also like to control each signal seperately.  (ie. different effects on vocals and guitar - at same time).
Thanks in advance for any replies

    No need for a mixer or anything, keep it simple. Sing and play while monitoring with effects through your daw if you can get the latency down low enough-that is the key. I like to practice by recording a tune and automating everything and then I strip away the recorded tracks and play live through the automation.  It's almost like accoustic music where all you do is literally sing and play.

    I ain't no guitarist but the footpedal "controls" guitar rig - sending midi (I guess) to guitar rig.  If it is midi, I suppose the maudio has a midi input or the controller itself could use USB midi.

    The mic goes into the XLR input.  You dont' need a separate mixer.  There is a hardware volume control for the mic on the front of the m-audio unit, and you set the line/guitar level from software (either the guitar rig input, maudio software mixer or ableton's mixer - so gainstaging can get confusing).

    I don't know anything about ableton - this is a Cakewalk forum, but dfreeborg has a simple and easy way to set things up for instant gradification.  PLug everything in, make sure your software is set up right and play.  Then drag your drum/bass tracks into abelton to get a loop going and start experimenting.
