Guitar Rig LE and Sonar X1
Users of Guitar Rig LE packaged with Sonar X1 may be interested in checking out the article in the latest Sound on Sound magazine (p. 126 of the US edition). It gives tips for getting the best sound out of GR, including specifics about using Pro Channel. The article is not a list of recommended presents: it is more about using level, EQ, and other settings to get the best sound.

I know you're kidding, but here's the link: http://www.soundonsound.c...es/sonar-tech-0711.htm PDF is $1.49 (cheaper than the magazine), although I find the magazine worth the price. You may be able to read this free next month when the new issue is out—not sure how it works.

"One way to sweeten a distorted amp‑simulation sound is to run your projects at an 88.2kHz or 96kHz sample rate." Oh boy ... here we go. Every time I've tried to use Guitar Rig @ 88.2kHz, I get a nasty crackling noise. The biggest thing I did to improve the sound quality of Guitar Rig is turn my CPU settings to 'Hi' and use a tube pre-amp. The tube pre-amp turned Guitar Rig 4 Pro in to a completely different plug-in. I see the 'theory' behind them suggesting the 88.2/96 thing, but I ain't buying it. Once you get in to digital land I honestly think that kind of thing is out the window.

In my world, if it isn't 48/24, it isn't getting recorded. On a separate note, I had downloaded about 2500+ patches for GR4 at some point that were assembled by someone. I have to ask EW if it'd be ok to offer them up on the forum - I remember there being controversy about them.

No, whether they are original and valid to share. There are plenty of good presets on there. I come up with great presets/sounds on GR4 as well. GR is my Amp Sim of choice.

Here is a ridiculously simple but useful setting when you are in a Dobie Gray type mood: Go to Pop presets and pick Simple Guitar Tone In the Jump drop down, change Init to Dirty Clean Move the Studio Reverb Wet Dry up to about 50% (straight up 12:00).

Dobie is in that special category of people whose records are part of the general consciousness after their fame is gone. There are millions who would recognize Drift Away but not his name. That is generally not my style of music at all—too 70s loungey—but there is something about the feel of his tracks that I really like.

I'd be very interested in some Guitar Rig LE setting recommendations to get good surf guitar sounds. Thanks.

There is a styles category for Surf on GR but I can't remember if there was anything there before I upgraded. If you can spare $50 and the deal is still on, I think you'd be very happy if you upgraded to the full version.

Glad it helped, Marshall! I don't know about others, but I have huge knowledge gaps right in the middle of my areas of expertise, so I am always looking for education. There is just too much for a normal human to know.

Has anyone read Craig's article in SOS and followed his example set up in the final section? I have to the letter, and I must say that it improves the guitar tone considerably, and gets rid of a load of harsh tones. I have the EQ settings within ProChannel exactly as described and it really sweetens everything up. EXCEPT I still have ProChannel in the Pre position. If I switch it to Post as Craig suggests, to enable ProChannel to process GR4 LE's signal, I lose all the dynamics, and top end - just sounds muffled. Either way, it was very instructive for me to read this article, especially regarding the EQ settings.

What does he say to do with the EQ? I've had the full version of GR a long time and haven't gotten any real improvement out of it (not that it needs improvement) other than increasing it's CPU setting to 'Hi' and I'm having a hard time understanding why coupling it with Sonar's PC-EQ is such a big improvement? It just sounds like a plug for Sonar imo.
