…...Guitar Synth Soundscape …including a New Mix

Hi Everybody ,

this song here was primarily composed and played on my midi guitar by me
I did not use any loops or anything anyone else created except for some of the drums and I think I might of nicked the loop for the cello part...
a quick rundown
I played real 4 string bass on this in time with the song …
I actually tried to make it sound as if it was a synth bass ..go figure.lol
all the piano parts were played on guitar via midi
same with every other instrument except for the drums and one little part I played on the keyboard ...
I also used this song as an experimental pallet for sound design …
so be forewarned,
I'm not looking to play it safe with the sounds I rolled and created …..it might not be a pretty listen

    Hi Kenny,
Sounds great, nice and clean sound on the mix, I could hear everything in it just fine. Very creative with the sounds and midi guitar, excellent guitar playing as well! Thumbs up for me!

Great Kenny, who says good music has to be pretty. Well done with the synth guitar, it's great to hear music that's created with an instrument that for me is not standard.

I like it!   Who cares what you used to record the parts, the end result works IMO.

About the only thing mix-wise I didn't care for was the synth line towards the end which sounds a bit too centered for my tastes.   Otherwise...  nice job.

this could be a part of a prog rock arrangement..
it's kinda bold, kinda rocky, kinda spacey in the right ways...

i think you should keep experimenting with the sounds on the synths...
maybe some of the sustained pads, should not just fade out, but morph into something way more evil sounding...

    Hi rebel007 ,
I'm using an app called Midi Guitar …it tracks better than my hardware midi guitar ...
    I like that I can use any guitar I wan't ….man that's freedom ….
I'm looking to dive a lot deeper into playing unconventional sounds triggered by my guitar ...
    thank you for the listen

    Hi Steve,
normally I just post a tune with out the equipment run down ….
in my last tune , a lot of folks were curious  as to what I was using so I figured I might as well put a brief rundown in my opening post ….
as far as what I used , yeah it really shouldn't matter all that much and I like to keep a little air of mystery ...
I'm happy you liked it……yes , that synth near the end went rouge on me and I agree w you , it is taking up a little to much space ...
    thanks

    Hi batsbrew,

this little song has been a nice experiment for me on a lot of levels …
it got the juices flowing again and it has helped me find some of the brick walls i keep hitting in my musical production skills …
this old dog needs to learn a few new production skills and I'm really enjoying learning & working with the synths ...

over the years , I've dabbled around in various musical genres and it's all been good stuff for a learning experience

I've come to the conclusion that deep down , this direction is more along the lines musically where I want to be going ...

I'm very happy that I was able to post a tune that had guitar and synth sounds in it that you liked ..

I like this a lot. It has a nice progression. The piano licks in the middle are very well done, as if they were done on keys.

What else can be said? Different and sounded fine. Perhaps a bit more of the bass guitar in there on the low end in volume otherwise the song was different and reminded me of what you said it was.

    Hi John,
I like to blend analog guitar sounds with digital synth sounds …it is nice having the best of both worlds
when it gells it can be pretty synergistic …on this song I feel it has a couple of moments where I feel it gells

I do hope you start using your guitar more even if it is only to lay down simple parts….
it can really add a lot to a tune that has a bit of sampled work in it...
even though I played this song and used a guitar to trigger the synths …without my analog guitar parts , this tune would be an OK place to try and do something ….but it wouldn't be me
thanks John  for the kind words...

    Hi Kenny,
Cool instrumental, here, with good variations in texture and pace. The interplay between the GTR and fake piano in the mid-section is hot- kinda Zappa-esque.

Nicely done Kenny I enjoyed the blend of sounds.

Interestingly there was a band on last weeks Later... with Jools Holland which consisted of just Bass and drummer and he was getting some nice sounds out of his bass not sure if you can see this but here is a link to the whole show.

Most excellent! I really enjoyed the interplay between the guitar and the piano and the harsh synth sounds although they could have been a LOT meaner and the track would have still worked.

    Cheers,
    Terry.

I like this a lot. It has a nice progression. The piano licks in the middle are very well done, as if they were done on keys.

    Hi Scotty,
thanks for leaving a comment over on SC … I got to return the favor
I'm glad you liked this and dug the songs progression ….
yeah , those piano licks …they are pentatonic fourths and they lay pretty easy on the guitar ...
I think using the keyboard for those tones added a nice touch and texture to my song ...
    thanks
OT , are you a pilot ? I noticed in your pic over at sound cloud that you seemed very happy in that picture , and it looked to me that you were flying a plane …..cool beans

    spacealf
What else can be said? Different and sounded fine. Perhaps a bit more of the bass guitar in there on the low end in volume otherwise the song was different and reminded me of what you said it was.

    hi spacealf ,
the bass is pretty much where I wanted it to be for now
thank you very much for giving my song a listen and offering you feedback

    davdud101
Really cool sounds I think, Kenny! Someone above said it feels like it could be a prog rock... such a great idea! Personally I love the ending too

    hi davdud101,
I'm happy you dug my sounds , that means a lot to me
Yeah , progressive rock / experimental rock is probably where I'm gonna be heading for a while in my music
…it's a lot of fun,  and there is plenty of room to experiment
I'm happy you like the ending and I hope it's OK for me to say this I happen to like the ending myself
    thanks

    M_Glenn_M
    A Great start
    Very interesting progression.
    Nice riffs.
    Great balance and arrangement.
    I liked it!

    hi M_Glenn_M ,
I tried a lot of new things on this song , some things I haven't tried before …... I'm very happy that you liked it .
thank you for the kind words

    Rimshot
Good job Kenny.  I don't hear much guitar midi stuff and I liked all the colors you created.

    hi Rimshot ,
I'm speaking generally when I say this that midi guitar is a tough nut to crack …..
I honestly think midi guitar would be much more popular with guitar players if a player didn't have to alter just about every aspect of playing the guitar to play a midi guitar cleanly ...

I got my first midi guitar in 1982 …..I'm still at it ….still doing my best to crack that nut ….
the thing that changed the most that makes it worth it to me is the potential of sounds that I can create …or have at my disposal
in this song I have barely scratched the surface of what can be done on a guitar synth with todays synthesizers...

I'm very happy that you enjoyed the tones and colors in my song ….it means a lot to me

    Kenny

I liked this a lot Kenny. Loved the section at 1:37, really lush and 'epic'. Good dynamics and plenty of variety in here, I can tell you enjoyed yourself

    The Band19
Son of a Biotch... I listened, and thought I commented on my phone...

You've got to love synthesizers... They expand your music like other things expand your mind?

Music without synthesizers? Is like "fun" without young women...

    P.S. I enjoyed this.

P.P.S, haven't enjoyed a young woman in a while? But that's another story...

    Hi Robbie ,

sorry to take so long getting back here , i had a lot going on and I sort of let my songs hang ...
you know how it is …I wanted to  listen to other peoples songs and comment before I got back to my own ...

I'll tell you something about synths …they are just about as hard for me to figure out as women
In the past few weeks I wound up picking up Groove 3 videos  for Dim Pro , Rapture , EXS 24 and Z3AT2 ...
I feel like I'm in synth boot camp over here .

I'm glad you enjoyed my tune  thanks for listening and commenting

    Bert Guy
    Hi Kenny,
Cool instrumental, here, with good variations in texture and pace. The interplay between the GTR and fake piano in the mid-section is hot- kinda Zappa-esque.

    Cheers,

    Bert

    Hi Bert Guy ,
My music is pretty much instrumental music . I'm always looking to explore new sonic territory
I like what happened with that interplay and I'm planing on going there some more .
thank you for giving this song a listen

    Wookiee
Nicely done Kenny I enjoyed the blend of sounds.

Interestingly there was a band on last weeks Later... with Jools Holland which consisted of just Bass and drummer and he was getting some nice sounds out of his bass not sure if you can see this but here is a link to the whole show.

    Hi Wookiee,

I'm real happy you enjoyed the blend of sounds in my tune
some of them  were a lot of work to come up with and I learned a little something along the way ..
I honestly hope to get better at that sort of thing …I feel this was a good start

Sorry , I haven't gotten the chance yet to check out the link , I hope to soon ...
I love playing with a real drummer much more that I like playing with drum machines

thanks for giving this song a listen

    Hi Reece,

Yes , I think I went through a long period of time where I was playing my guitar to backing tracks for Blues contests and doing a little guitar playing for u tube videos….then I posted my Jazz improv homework ...
I'm very happy you like what I did on this song  it means a lot to me

    Hi Terry,

you should of heard that harsh synth before I toned his a$$ down

yeah I listened to some of your tunes …..
you an I might be able to do something musical in the future
I have a lot of experience playing my guitar with piano / keyboard orientated music

thanks for giving my song a listen , I appreciate it ...

    Hi James ,

I'm very happy you enjoyed this experimental song
Yes, that section at 1:37 came out pretty good (i think ) and I love the way it ends with the power chords ….
thats just our Les Paul clearing his throat
In did spend some time working that section up and I think thats the type of rock I'm looking to write and play.
I'm happy that theres a couple of sections of the song that have went over well...
It's true that I really enjoyed myself doing this song .
    thank you James

    all the best ,

Sound fantastic.  I have got to give MIDI guitar a try.  There is a new program that is getting good reviews so I might give that a try...apparently you can use a normal guitar.

Now I want a MIDI guitar!  You always seem to be evolving, and I never know what to expect from you except excellence.  I love it that you always take the guitar to the next level.  Kudos!
