Guitar Trackcs vs Sonar

I'm a guitar player and I am learning Sonar 4.

Will GT intergrate with Sonar 4 or are they completely different environments?

Anyone using both? If you own Sonar is it worth getting GT?

Thanks!

    Hi Anthony

First off, Guitar Tracks Pro3 doesn't support MIDI - if you're using any MIDI in a SONAR 4 project then that will not open in, or be compatible with, GT3.

Just to clarify, can you tell us if it's SONAR 4, or SONAR Home Studio 4 you're currently using?

Anyway, in answer to your question, without a few more details about what you want to do with your software and what sort of 'level' of recording you are doing - I'd suggest exploring SONAR Home Studio 7, which has just been released; it's the same price as GT3 and offers, in my opinion, far better value for money and MIDI capability.

There is also a Home Studio 7XL version which ships with another disc of extras - take a look through the Products by clicking on 'Purchase' at the top of a forum page to give you a better idea of what the various programs offer.

Another important point is that of all the programs mentioned, only Guitar Tracks is NOT supported in Windows Vista - most of us with Vista have it working OK in compatibility mode but the other software is supported.

Let us know if you need to know anything else Anthony.

    Steve

    Thanks!

I am using Sonar 4.0.4 Studio, not Home Studio 4. Sorry for the confusion!

I do use lots of MIDI. I use WinXP (no VISTA at all!)

Does GT3 have the ability to generate standard sheet music from your audio tracks?

    Thanks!

    Hi Tony

GT won't do that for you I'm afraid.

As a SONAR user, I'd maybe take a look at the newest version, SONAR 8 which you can upgrade to for just $249, or maybe Home Studio 7XL for $129.

    Tony,

Most of what you are looking for is available in SHS7 or S8. You'd be better going down that road as GTP3 is really jhust an audio recording DAW with no MIDI support or the additional capabilities that Sonar Home Studio and Sonar have. All of waht you have mentioned so far can be found in Sonar Home Studio 7.

    Tony,
Sonar 4, Sonar Home Studio 4, and Guitar Tracks Pro 3 all share the same audio engine.
Essentially, GTP3 is Sonar 4 without the MIDI support.
To generate sheet music, you really need the MIDI. Sonar and SHS can easily generate sheet music from MIDI, because it is well defined.
Extracting note information from audio is beyond the capability of anything I am aware of today, although it may be possible in the near future.
fwiw, the audio engines for Sonar 6 and later are noticably better than the one in Sonar 4 (to my ears), and an upgrade would be worthwhile.
While SHS7 would technically be a downgrade, it has some tasty features, and seems to be largely based on Sonar 8.
I am currently quite content with SHS6XL under XP, but 7 is looking tempting.

You are better off sticking with Sonar. GT3 is designed for guitar plyers and not so much for point-n-clickers like Sonar is.

Taking your inherent latency into consideration, that's about 5 years in Peteyworld.

It was an honest retort. You asked what is up. I looked up and there was only ceiling above me. But if you must. Beyond the ceiling are the rafters, then then the roof, then the clouds, above that sky and then the stratosphere, the van Allen's belt, the Solar system, the stars, the galaxy, the universe, life, and everything....
