Guitar Tracking Question

Usually I'll record a guitar track dry and throw on a plug in (chorus, delay, etc.) after the fact.
But if I want to use an amp modeler (I have a Pod 2.0, XT Live, and a Vox Tonelab) and utilize an effect from that (let's say a tremolo effect), how do I split this?
I know I have to use 2 tracks in Sonar, one for the dry guitar, and one with the guitar and effect. I would assume mix to taste at that point, but how do I properly do the split coming out of the modeler?

Thanks

If you have pod farm software what you do is go to the mixer tab you will have two channels left and right. You have the option to record as processed, semi or unprocessed. set one side to processed and the other to unprocess. Open two tracks set to record on the imputs set one left one right and you are good to go. I do this a lot then Nudge one track a little to get a fuller sound

You can also just purchase a splitter box (passive) that will split your guitar signal into 2 separate signals and route them to where ever you want.

This does a good job splitting the signal:

No you don't. You can't record the effect anyway. Just record one track with the effect on and Input Echo on. It will record what you play without the effect although you'll hear the effect. When you play it back, you will hear the part with the effect on or you can turn it off or change the effect to something else. You don't need a splitter.

I am not sure that is correct daveny

I think Gaffpro wants to actually record the effect (tremolo) produced by his outboard gear so he has to actually record the audio signal (with effect) coming out of this unit

He also wants to keep an unprocessed (dry) signal for mixing (or re-amping/processing) at a later stage

I would therefore agree with others that a splitter is the simplest option

Why not use an inexpensive DI Box with an input-thru?

DI box (passive) is the way I do it, one signal to my POD, the other to my audio interface. I just have two tracks armed one from the POD and the dry signal coming from the DI. Works great.

Yes sir, the DI box with the thru will do the trick... the DI signal to the SOUNDCARD chain, the thru signal back to the amp or hardware processor or whatever and then the output of the hardware inputed into the DAW (via a MIC if a real amp is involved or the output of the device).  Now, this will require that the soundcard is capable of handling two inputs at once (most do).

If you can only record one signal at a time, then the only way to go would be to do some crazy manipulations with a stereo signal PRE-DAW  keeping each signal panned hard left and right during recording.
