Guitar players - sticky neck

I just got a new (i.e., from the factory) Fender Telecaster with a maple neck. I find the neck, how do I say, kind of sticky. I don't mean glue type sticky. It is just not 'smooth' to play as yet. One obvious solution, and probably the best, is to just keep on playing it and let my natural hand oils smooth it up. But I don't get to play it that often, so I was wondering if I can apply any store-bought substances to get this neck is playing condition (e.g., wood wax, etc)?  I don't recall any of my other guitars having this issue.

Broken pencils are pointless.

    I had a similar problem with my Strat, playing seems to have cured the problem but you could try this.

    Lightly rub the back of the neck with some very, very fine steel wool.
