floating Laminate is installed over a thin pad unless the laminate has it (pad) already glued to the backs of the planks.
But, yea, not carpet pad..

Update:

My electrician has been in and run a brand new ring main from the fuse box downstairs, fitted new sockets and tested everything. So far so good. Total wall outlets has doubled from 3 to 6 (it was effectively 2 sockets before as one was permanently connected to the boiler which now has it's own supply)

Now a minor setback - I have to replace all of the skirting boards

But I'm glad in one way - it means I can lay the floor first and run it wall to wall (leaving a small expansion gap) without having to worry about fitting to the existing skirting boards.

I've also just about finished the design stage of my new studio desk which I intend to start building when we get back from Gran Canaria (we fly on Monday for a whole 7 days!!)

Getting there slowly.........

I always thought Gran Canaria was closer than that, or is it a really slow 'plane?

It's hard to say how long it will take to get to Gran Canaria especially if she keeps moving around.

Sometimes I wish she'd just sit and watch telly like most people of her age.

I guess fuel capacity might play a part on a 7 day flight but I don't think a 'plane can fly @ 10mph

On a good day it's about 3.5 hours from Bristol.

We've just discovered that there's water damage to the ceiling.

No, no...  British gas is when you want something like a Cornford amp.  American gas is when you want a Gibson guitar.

So, British Gas aka Dynorod eventually turn up (today !), the engineer fixes the leak, disappears on his way - and we're left with no hot water.

Update:

We now have:
  • New floor
  • All painting done
  • All walls freshly papered

I started moving my gear back in on Monday/Tuesday, hooked up the basics last night, and everything fired up and worked first time <yes!!!!!>

But I now have to start treating the room. At the moment it's incredibly splashy but at least I'm working "downwards" from a known acoustic - I just need to know when to stop

I will have to totally re-learn how the room sounds as well - I've turned my whole seating plan around by 180 degrees, facing a different wall, and it's a completely different sound.

This is only temporary until I build my new studio desk - everything is currently sat on a large picnic table

Progress:

I threw a couple of rugs down last night and the difference in the reverb time of the room is incredible! This is before any serious trapping, so I should be able to dry it up quite nicely.

I already have 3 bass traps from the old studio ready to go, and I've found a cheap supplier of 4 inch (100mm) foam tiles, in both wedge & pyramid profile for spot treatment of certain areas.

The 50Hz hum I've been getting for years from my headphone amp (Behringer Powerplay) has totally disappeared!

In fact, I've got so much level going into it that I need to attenuate all the feeds back down.

The easiest way to get rid of 50Hz hum is to move to the U.S.

(Where you'll have to deal with 60Hz hum instead!  )
