The jig is up! On my mother's side, her father (my grandfather) was the 1st born here. His parents came over on the boat during the potatoE famine... Horrible what the British did to the Irish.

Bluegrass music (good fiddle music!) originated from Scotland and Ireland and rooted in the mtns of the east from immigrants.

My dad, rest his soul, would have loved you even more than I do.  You are right up his musical alley.  Very nice.

So... what is the difference between a JIG and a HORNPIPE?

    Daryl,
Thank you. I'm sure I would have loved your dad too. A hornpipe is played in a couple of different rhythms and time signatures. It can be played moderately fast in 2/4 or 4/4 as a reel, or slowly in dotted rhythm 2/4 to make it  syncopated. A jig, however, is most commonly played in 6/8 time and can also be played in 9/8.

Amazingly, yesterday you explained jig vs. hornpipe vs. a reel.

Then last night on PBS I hear this Irish guy explaing the same thing about the time signatures of jig/reel/ectc.  Uncanny!

He confirmed you were right by the way,  which I had no doubt you were.

I'm quite late here, but great no matter what day I listen to it.  I WOULD enjoy seeing a video of you playing, no matter what the mix sounds like.  And for the record, I'm part Irish too...my paternal grandmother was a Campbell and often talked about how her father came over on a ship when he was 7, or 11, or something.  It was a few years ago I suspect.  :-)  But, who cares...great song and great playing. :-)
