HDD Velociraptor silencing?
Anyone have a clue how I could "silence" my Velociraptors (I have a 4 HD setup - SSD for OS, 2x Velociraptors in Raid0 for Audio and a 7200rpm for samples) I've located my most noisy part of the computer to the Velociraptors, anyone have a clue if it is possible to reduce the noise of these in a way? It is in a fairly good sound dampened case (see signature) and they have a rubber dampening of some kind also (case standard). It is not resonance noise, I'd say. Would this item might be worth it?

Looks like you would need 5 1/4" bays (CD/DVD drive bays) for this. I wonder how it affects heat with the drives? Along with any "noise" heat is always an issue with hard drives.

Would this item might be worth it? That would make the Vel-Raptors quieter (requires a 5.25" bay - as mentioned)... at the risk of heat buildup. If you're wanting a quieter machine, the best long-term solution would be to replace the Vel-Raptors.

I recently purchased 2 Raptors (2.5" form factor) and noise is not an issue at all. As mentioned, heat buildup may turn out to be too much with the enclosure you're considering. Reasonably priced "sound-proof" computer enclosures might be something worth looking into also.

HDDs dedicated to samples and audio won't be working as busily as an OS drive, so heat build-up may not be significant in this case.

2x Velociraptors in Raid0 for Audio I am curious to know how many tracks you need to handle that you require 10K rpm drives in RAID0. As has been hinted earlier, the best design for a quiet PC might have been to avoid the noisy drives in the first place. The muffler you reference seems to have a bunch of people worried about the heat dissipation. If we are to believe the tests presented on that website, the muffler/drive mounts actually are more efficient at cooling than air surrounding the bare drives. All this with no moving parts, fans or heat fins. Is that possible? Maybe. If you look at the images, the unit seems to encase the drive in some kind of flexible bladder that makes good contact with the drive case. Fill these bladders with an excellent heat conducting gel (or better fluid to allow for improved convection) coupling the drive case with a larger surface area of the muffler, and you might get more efficient radiation/convection of heat from that larger area external box surface. Of course if you mount two of them on top of each other, some of that surface area may be compromised, as they look like they will fill the whole bay. Modern hard drives have temperature sensors on board, so using utility software provided by the manufacturer, or other software, you should be able to see if your drive is getting too hot in its new muffler. It always amazes me how much people are willing to pay for soundproofing a computer case. For a fraction of the cost in cable extensions most home, and probably all commercial studios could be run with the computer on the other side of a wall or two, inside a closet or hanging out a window (or how about inside that old refrigerator where you keep the beer?), where the minor noise of a fan or drive would be rendered irrelevant.

FWIW, Most of the heat build up is from rotation (which is constant). Faster RPM = more heat If you're pulling a lot of disk-streaming polyphony from Kontakt/etc, the "Samples" HD can actually be working harder than the OS drive. If those samples are loaded into RAM (Superior 2.0/etc), then the drive won't be taxed at all...

yes, I also noticed in several tests that the temperature is significantly lower than standard (one of the tests was also actually with a Velociraptor, or a Raptor). And a competetive product (dont remember the name) also had this result, but somewhat less effective. Jim: you say the best long-term result would be to replace the V-raptors. But to what? :) (with the same performance....)

Problem solved (well, workaround that is...) Changing them both out with a OCZ Agility 3 SSD.
