HELP.. Tape hiss. Old tapes to mp3/wav

This is my first post, so please be gentle.
Way back in the 80s I recorded myself onto a Tascam Porta 05 (Yamaha drum machine, Fender Strat, Hondo bass and Casio keyboard), from which I made cassette tape recordings (2 track). I have copied the tapes into mp3 format. I've eq'd them and remasterd using sonar, but still I think there's more I could do to make them sound better.
My questions are..1. Does anyone know the best way to get rid of the residual 'tape hiss' ?
and 2. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can 'beef-up' and make the recordings 'crisper'  so that they sound the best they can?
I'm using sonar producer 8.5
Any advice and help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks, kojo

Hi Kojo, welcome to the fourm(s)! Man it feels good not being the newest noob anymore! ^_^

I've also converted several performance tracks from tape to wave. After some research I settled on using Sonitus:EQ (others would be fine I'm sure) I chopped the ends off sharply right up till I noticed a loss of content. I then used a couple of dips with very high Q and swept the upper freqs until I isolated and reduced the hiss to a level not really gone but to the point where it isn't noticeable/objectionable. That's the best I can do. The only irritant is the end where a sooner than normal fade I use to 'mask' (meh... whatever) the noise. Hope that helps in some small or big way!

The best way would probably be to get something like RX or Soundsoap but that might be a bit pricy... Check if there are like "14 day demos" or something and you might be able to do evereything you need in that time

Sadly very reduced studio equipment as it is... ASUS G750J, 8 gb RAM, Win8, Roland Quad Capture.

    Oh here it is:
Soundsoap 14 day trial and RX save disabled demo (don't know if the save disable means you can't export though).

Sadly very reduced studio equipment as it is... ASUS G750J, 8 gb RAM, Win8, Roland Quad Capture.

Sony Sound Forge and other programs have de-noisers - they sample the noise (without the real signal present) and remove those frequencies.  They cost, as Legion points out, but the cheaper version of SF may include it (check it out at SONY).  Otherwise you are stuck w/ more destructive EQ.

I think you can do that in SONAR but I also use a program (FREE) that is called WAVEPAD  have a look at their site.... one of the things listed is "removing tape hiss and other noise"

Here: last line at the bottom

    Typical Audio Editing Applications
    • Software audio editing for studios and professional journalists.
    • Edit sound files to broadcast over the internet with the BroadWave Streaming Audio Server
    • Normalizing the level of audio files during mastering before burning to CD.
    • Editing mp3 files for your iPod, PSP or other portable device.
    • As a music editor (includes ringtones creator formats).
    • Music editing and recording to produce mp3 files.
    • Voice editing for multimedia productions (use with our Video Editor).
    • Restoration of audio files including removing excess noise such as hiss and hums.

Another good freebie is Audacity.  It has a noise removal feature.  Make sure you set it at it's lowest setting for starters.

    good luck.

This may be too obvious, but I'll say it anyway. You say you copied
the tapes to mp3 format, then EQ'd and so on. I suppose you recorded them as wave-files first and did the editing in lossless format, and then converted to mp3?

If you go directly to mp3 you've already lost the first round.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

    Kalle makes a good point....

    Copy them to Wave first....

Make your noise abatement in WAVE... once it's good to your ears.... then convert to MP3 @ 320kbs.

If you go to mp3 first the math on the kbs  is appalling...and the sound suffers.

What I did was to copy from tape into sonar then eq'd and saved as mp3.. I'll give it another go, saving as wav. Thanks for the advice....

don't burn a CD with that MP3...... Go back into sonar and save it as a WAVE if you plan to burn a CD.... it has to do with the quality of the music at the bit rate level.

I second the Sony noise reduction plug. It does a pretty good job on hiss.
Better than the Waves plug IMO.

Just want to say 'many thanks' to you all for your help.
I'm currently re-saving to wav (instead of mp3) and things are better.. It's taking a long time as I have about 6-9 hours of music tapes to transfer..
I'll be giving the filter suggestions a go once I've finished.

    All the best, cheers, Kojo
