HELP! X2 crashing on project load

X2 Producer has pretty much run flawlessly for me, so I never upgraded to X3. I went to make a small mix change to a project I last worked on a couple weeks ago and X2 crashes while loading the project. So I tried loading the CWB file from my backup hard disk and it crashes as well. Other songs seem to load OK (so far), so I suspect there is something in that project that is killing it.

The project is about 16 tracks of audio and a couple MIDI tracks (Kick and Snare enhancements) so Session Drummer is in the mix as well as (I think) TTS-1 for the click track.

Any suggestions on how to recover this particular song? It was a nearly final mix for our upcoming CD release so I would hate to have to re-create it from the Audio folder...

Try using safe mode by hold the shift key while opening the project

Never knew "safe mode" existed. I chose to not load any plug-ins and it still crashed.

I'm downloading the X3 trial and hope that it can load the project...

And.... there is no joy. Crashes the exact same way with X3. Sigh...

Perhaps some system maintenance has altered the interactions to the point where this is occurring?

Do you have the means of restoring your system to a point just after your mix was at it's best?

It might be worth a shot, in terms of resetting the system, in the event that something with them is causing the problems in opening, though the whole thing would be a giant PITA.

I have not had to do the above, so someone else would be better at guiding you through the process.  I don't suppose there are project backups that you could try?  (And if you DO have such backups and they still do not open, then it would further justify a system restore approach, I would think - though again I ask for someone else to comment on my thoughts to correct or confirm them).

No system maintenance or new software installs that I can think of.

My backup (CWB file) fails the exact same way so I'm feeling really screwed right now.

I might try contacting Cakewalk directly to see if they can offer a way to save this project.

Well, what I was thinking is that if the backups are failing, then perhaps something system-wise has changed, and by restoring your system to a point prior to whenever this nonsense started might get you back to where you could open the project.

Just curious, why is the project saved as a bundle, and not as a regular project file?

The project IS saved as a regular project on my D: drive. Plus I make a bundle (CWB) as a backup on an external drive to protect myself against hard disk crashes.

Also note, X2 plays my other songs just fine. It's a single project that won't load. If I was having a system issue, it would affect all song playback (as all my songs are pretty much the same content and plug-in wise).

I sent an email to Cakewalk. Hopefully they would be willing to let me send them a CD with the project on it to figure out why X2 and X3 are crashing. And maybe even work some magic on the project to salvage it for me...

What really scares me is that I don't know what caused the problem. Some weird combination of settings (what's visible, etc). I have 17 more songs to finish on this album project. I was just lucky that the song that is messed up was close to a final mix (releasable as-is).

Thanks for clarifying - might be a corrupted project then.  I was just trying to think of any other possibilities you could look at to recover it.

I was taking the approach that if the project hadn't changed, and the hardware hadn't changed, then some aspect of the software must have changed, or the project has gotten corrupted for some reason.

I always leave everything in regular CWP format, and have not thus far had any issues.

    Best of luck with it,

Do you use auto save? If you do, there should be other versions of the song in the same folder as the original project. Look to see if there is an Auto-Saved version in the folder. If so, try to open it and see what happens.

Maybe you could load X2 on another machine and see if it opens there.

Send the bun file to someone else to open for you. See if that works.

    (Grasping at straws here!)

And if all above fails, I know you may not want to hear this, but you might want to start constructing the song from the audio files if you can. Sounds like the Project is corrupt. And if it is, I don't think anything can be done.
