HELP: how to setup Alesis MIDI controller in SONAR

Hi folks!

I just got an ALESIS Vi61 MIDI controller keyboard for use with SONAR als host and Sampletank as instrument plugin. Plugged in to a Windows 10 Laptop via USB-MIDI.
The MIDI keyboard is working fine, I can play sounds from within Sonar. However - I am totally lost when it comes to configuring all those knobs and buttons of the MIDI keyboard controller.
For example: I would love to know how to do something as simple as change a MIDI channel or an instrument patch from within the keyboard. Or how to change volume/velocity or how to even use the the wheel controllers for modulation and pitch.
Only thing that is working is the keyboard (I can play notes) and the sustain pedal.
I tried to dive into setting up a control surface in SONAR but I have to admit that I am totally lost. I don't even know what to use as MIDI output (only devices to choose from are MS generic MIDI synth and the Input of the Alesis Keyboard, which does not produce any sounds).
And yes, there is a control software from Alesis that I have installed and opened but I really don't understand it.

So, I know that most people here are very advanced and experienced and maybe it's unusual to ask  such a seemingly stupid and basic question as I am doing right now. I apologize for my ignorance, but I really am totally confused and don't know where to start.
Does anybody know whether predefined control templates exist for this particular MIDI controller keyboard to be used with SONAR that I possibly could just import? Or do you know of a very simple/basic step-by-step instruction on how to set this controller up in SONAR? And witg "simple instruction" I mean, something suitable for really very stupid people like me when it comes to these things.

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Best

David

OK, after some digging and experimenting, I actually managed to assign two controller knobs to volume and pan, respectively, also the record and stop button, which is quite cool!

However, I wonder if there is a possibility to change instrument patches, and to change MIDI channels. For example, if I have preloaded different instruments/patches (within Sampletank) assigned to different MIDI channels, how could I use the MIDI controller keyboard buttons to switch between MIDI channels or between patches? Or is that not possible in SONAR?

Thanks for your help in advance!

I have not seen templates/instructions for this controller. But I can try to help.

1. Wheels should work as keys by default. If they do not, check Sonar Preferences / MIDI / Playback and Recording / Record section. "Controller" and "Pitch Wheel" should be "checked.
If still no luck (and you have not assigned Modulation wheel in Control Surface plug-in...), open Alesis editor and check what the wheel is sending. That is configurable. "ModWheel" is CC#01, default setting. Also check which MIDI channel is used for keys and wheels, it should be the same (I guess default is "1" for all).

2. To make things a bit simpler, do not use "Instrument track" in Sonar, make separate SoftSynth track and 16 MIDI tracks (all routed to one SampleTank), one per channel. On each track, in the track inspector, set the channel (combo-box with "C"). That way, whatever comes to this track or recorded, at the output is converted to specific MIDI channel. So, to change th "channel" you just need to select corresponding MIDI track (see later).

3. For the DAW (any, in this case Sonar), you configure the transport and track selection. The rest (individual instruments volume/pan, etc) is better to do inside SampleTank (till you in addition to 16 MIDI tracks create 16 output tracks). You can do this:
* using "ACT MIDI" Control Surface plug-in, assigning  to the transport and "Next/Previous" track. See corresponding documentation in Sonar Reference guide (2000+ pages PDF, not short version), a bit tricky even with the guide, but manageable to understand how to proceed (too cryptic without reading first...)
* using AZ Controller (see my signature). Way more tricky then previous suggestion, but with more possibilities (f.e. assign 16 buttons to select corresponding tracks directly).

4. (any) DAW has too little control over SoftSynth. So the rest should be assigned specifically for SampleTank.
There is one warning... CC messages can clash, so if you let say just "Learn" something but the same message is used for something else, one control will modify both settings.
So I suggest to configure Alesis using its editor to IK default settings. Check SampleTank documentation, "Settings" /"Remote" and "Control" dialogs inside the plug-in for required numbers. Note that MIDI channel is forced on track level (if you follow my proposal (2)). So you can leave knobs/buttons on channel 1 in Alesis.

I hope that helps (if completely stuck, we can try to meet online with Skype/Teamviewer, will take ~30m to setup).

azslow3, thanks a lot for your very helpful and detailed post!
I have downloaded the Sonar reference guide and just started reading the appropriate sections. This seems to be very similar to the (offline) help function.
With regards to your point #1: "controller" and "pitch wheel" have already been checked.
Today I will try out your suggestion to create a synth track and separate 16 MIDI tracks all assigned to the Sampletank output and will report back how it worked.

By the way: the "ACT MIDI" plugin/surface is a bit enigmatic to me. I watched a youtube video how a guy managed to properly assign all knobs and faders of his controller to the ACT MIDI plugin; however, when I attempted to do it, it worked only for the first three knobs....
Well, this all seems to have a very steep learning curve and I am grateful for any bit of help and support.
Thank you so much so far, I will report back later today when I have tried all this out and where I (presumaby) got stuck.

So, I managed to assign "next track" and "previous track" to two pads/buttons using the ACT Midi plugn - however, they don't work as expected, i.e. they do not change the selected track. :-(

I wanted to post a screenshot in order to show, but the forum software told me I cannot link to URLs until I have 5 posts...so I opened random threads in order to post something and get my 5 posts together when I suddenly saw that cakewalk is apparently out of business!!!! Wow!!!!! Now, this really stroke me like a lightning.
I was with cakewalk since Sonar 1 all up until ca. 2006 when I last updated to Sonar 6 producer. Since then I had a hiatus of around 10 years and it happened just a couple of months ago that I came back and purchased the latest SONAR version. Now it's all so incredibly sad.... I never used anything other than Sonar for my music.....
So sad....

It seems that I still cannot post images...

My bad... precise command are "Previous selected track" and "Next selected track" ("Previous track" move so called WAI, not the focus).

And yes, CW is in history. People are looking toward S1, Cubase or Samplitude. Check software board.
Other are not in a hurry and/or (like me) slowly changing to the "dark side"...
