HELP - real problem with Sonar Producer

I've noticed for sometime that it takes ages to save my sonar projects, and I've just worked out why, but I can't find any way to stop it.

When I open a Sonar project, it created thousands of wav files with the name of the project even when there are no audio tracks active.

It used up about 80 Gig in one project  (over 1500 wav files).  I was horrified to find my SSD left with 30 gig spare on closing one project !

Currently 162 Gig of such files occupy the audio folder even when all projects are closed, but none are wanted.

I have noticed that when bouncing tracks that it always creates TWO wav files per bounce too, but that is a separate problem (which I can't fix either).

I tried using the Clean Audio folder, but strangely although the path is set correctly, it tries searching everywhere, not just the audio folder specified and then stops working !

Sadly, before reading that you should not delete files outside Sonar, I somehow did manage to delete a whole batch of these for one project, but that didn't help either.

Any ideas?

Have you tried opening a new project ? Same thing ?
What Midi instruments are you using in the project ?

Check Sonar preferences, especially:
* Audio / Playback and recording / Driver mode
* Audio / Driver settings / Audio drive bit depth
* File / Audio data / [Global Audio Folder, File Bit depth / Import Bit (Original), Use per-project Audio folder (checked)

And compare with open project sample rate/bit depth.

I do not have an idea what can trigger such behavior, but may be you can notice something strange just looking at these settings.

I'm running everything at 48 kHz, 24 bit.

All of the used midi are vst EastWest Hollywood instruments plus Hauptwerk Organ vst.

As far as I can see, this only happens if at some point, in some version of the file I bounce a track.

I'm not 100% sure I understand the problem correctly, but...

Any audio you record, will be saved in the audio folder, whether you use it the project or not. Thousands of audio files sounds so much for failed takes, that it makes me think I'm misundertanding the problem. In that case, ignore me.

"When I open a Sonar project, it created thousands of wav files with the name of the project even when there are no audio tracks active"

Do you use Per Project Audio Folders? Do you really, litterally, mean those thousands of  files did not exist in the audio folder before, but were created by opening the project? Or do you mean it creates audio clips in the track pane?
What do those audio files contain? Are they failed takes that are not used by the project anymore?
What do you actually mean by "No audio tracks active"? Do you mean there are no audio tracks in the project or that an audio track is not selected? The audio files remain in the folder no matter what's activated in the track pane.

Using Per Project Audio Folder it might be worth saving the project under a new name with "Save all audio with project" (or something similar) checked. Then all audio, which is not used by the project is left out, and you can delete the old project file+audio.

Re: HELP - real problem with Sonar Producer 2018/03/10 14:33:10 (permalink)
It just doesn't make any sense.

When I create a new project, an audio folder is created in the same location as usual.

With this project, the audio folder is empty before I open the project.  On opening the project, the disk drive (whether I open a copy on my SSD drive, or a copy on an ordinary hard disk, exactly the same thing happens - the relevant drive runs at 100% until in the case of one project as an example, 1131 files appear within the audio folder, occupying 60.6 Gig.  This takes about 20 seconds.

There are no bounced tracks in this project.

If I add another soft synth track, it takes 37 seconds to add just one track.

Adding two new soft synths tracks increases the number of wav files to  1185, occupying 63.5 Gig.
Each wav files created are either 42,192 KB  or  or 84,279 KB.

When I close the project, these files are disappear.

Whilst present in the audio folder, I'm unable to play any of the files, so I'm unable to find anything out about them, other than the fact that they were created at the time I open the project.
If I try to play any of them from the media folder within Sonar, it says you can't because the file is being used by another process.

When Sonar crashes, the files remain and if I play any of them, they are silent.

They all have the name of the project plus (in brackets) a version number ( currently highest value is 139077).

If I could attach a screen shot I would, as it is hard to believe.

If I open up a new project (without closing the other), the wav files disappear until I make the original project active again.

I've checked for all projects, and the same happens to them all - but it seems that the number of wav files

I just created a new blank test - no audio or synth tracks.  The audio folder straight away produced 3 wav files , 2 at 38,768 KB and one at 77,524 KB

I'm unable to run the CWAF tool successfully as it crashes.

I've successfully created projects of 135 play synth tracks, so it is not that my computer is too slow etc.

I've also tried creating a project at 44.1 kHz, and exactly the same thing happens.

Re: HELP - real problem with Sonar Producer 2018/03/10 15:38:56 (permalink)
That will not help you, but Sonar has NEVER generated any unexpected temporary WAV files for me.

It is generating temporary files when something required conversion, f.e. I browse REX files (so Sonar creates one WAV per played REX). So you say ABSOLUTELY empty project, without any tracks, buses and so implicit FXes and Synthes (can be in your template project, so it is not really empty) already has 3 files?
That should not be...

Thanks EVERYONE for your help so far with this.

I never use cwb files - and I checked. All my projects are cwp files.

Perhaps I'll have to reinstall the whole program.

Just a bit concerned that as Cakewalk is in limbo at the moment, will I be able to access the install files?

I suppose I might as well spend sometime experimenting with the plugins ( 115 of them) and see if so some reason any of these is conflicting with something.

There was a period where whenever I created a new synth track (EastWest Play) that whatever I played on the keyboard appeared as a audio file rather than midi.  I'm not sure how I solved it, but that hasn't happened since then.

Sonar invented a new feature whereas audio is created simultaneously with midi.
What I do is, never use Simple Tracks. So, when I record enable make certain only the midi portion of the Split Track is record enabled. Also if you make Track Folder, make certain the Folder Record is not selected.

I did a test with all plug ins disabled.
Created a new BLANK project and saved it.  ON creating it, three wav files were produced.

If I added any tracks, the number of wav files increased significantly.

The only way to access any of these is if Sonar crashes.  When  I preview any of the ones left aftger the creash, there is nothing in them - or at least nothing is audible, but I can't insert them into a new project audio track - nothing happens if I try.

I even tried using an different audio output, disabling all inputs. No change.

I'm completely at a loss now.

I can still work on projects, but it takes such a long time to add tracks, delete tracks, move tracks - and not a single audio track in the projects.

I see your Sig says Sonar Producer. So this is not platinum correct ?

Are you freezing any midi tracks (to free up resources) ?

And if I may ask, what are you using to create a new project ? Your own template or Cakewalks ?
Try another Cakewalk Template. Are you saving as a .CWP ? Im pretty sure you said you were.

As a test I would open a blank project and try a different VST synth.

Which version of SONAR Producer? It may be helpful to know the patch level of the version too. This is in the SONAR About screen.

By BLANK project you mean the "--Blank Project--" entry at the top of the template section of the "New Project File" dialog?

Are per-project audio folders in use?

A general question that might relate. Is the term " Blank Project" the same as what used to be called the Normal project template?  If so , is it possible that your  "Blank Project" file was over written and you are pre-loading what sounds like corrupted tracks? - or Preloading a ton of loops or seperate clips.
Really stabbing in the dark here - But, I can't imagine your situation without considering a major corruption of "Blank Project" template. From what I understand - your licenses' should still be active and maybe you should just re-install.

Especially with other 2 options unchecked and some multi-out soft synth, that generate HUGE number of temporary files.

I've done a full re-install of Sonar Platinum (version 23.10.0 build 14 (2017.10)).

Reverted to just sonar standard vsts

Disabled all plugs ins.

reactivated any plugin and same problem.

My old computer runs without this problem and has pretty much the same versions of software (windows, DAW, vst etc).

I can live with this issue, but I am conscious that this is putting much more strain on the hard disks than it should and could result in HD failure (either SSd or platter) sooner than I would like.

Possibly the only other solution is a complete rebuild of my computer - which I really am not keen to do.

I just hope someone out there has experienced this issue and found the solution (without using a pick axe).

Did you do a complete reinstall (Remove registry entries, exc) ?

If not your just reinstalling Sonar. This is good for corrupt .DLL and such but not for a total reset of settings.

Re: HELP - real problem with Sonar Platinum NOW SOLVED 2018/03/13 09:10:33 (permalink)
Looks like this problem has been resolved.

Thanks to everyone for their ideas and being so quick to offer some suggestions.

  • Uninstalled Platinum again
  • Uninstalled Play again
  • Uninstalled
  • UVI
  • Cleared registry entries for Sonar and Play (interesting how following the useful link to doing a clean install didn't match everything on my system in terms of what should be there to remove)
  • Reinstalled all above again
  • Ensured recording bit depth set to 24, Render to 32.
At least now on opening one of the projects, the large number of 'wav' files appear, but now only 4 kB each, and they then disappear after a while.

Two annoying things:
  • All the tracks are now linked to the wrong Play instances so they all have to be re-assigned.  A bore for many of the tracks as it took a long time to experiment with the best samples to use, but a complete pain for the choirs as I have to add back in all the voice texts.
  • Until I've painstakingly gone through this, if I try to run the project, it crashes with the C0000005 error (where software is trying to access memory that doesn't exist). Particularly frustrating as there is plenty of memory spare !

I wonder if anyone else has found issues with Hollywood Choirs and Sonar?
I've lots of correspondence with EastWest about this latest sample set and they are still working on a fix.
I think this is a something to open in another thread.

Re: HELP - real problem with Sonar Platinum NOW SOLVED 2018/03/13 14:43:53 (permalink)
I don't think your problem is  fully fixed as when you open a new project you should not have any wav files at all in the audio folder.   I should  be completely empty.   I would open a new project and add in the extras one by one until you find what is causing this.  Its may be tedious but its the only way

Sonar Platinum, RME UFX, UAD 2, Waves, Soundtoys, Fronteir Alphatrack, X-Touch as Contl Srfc,  , Console 1, Sweetwater Creation Station Quad Core Win 8.1, Mackie 824, KRK RP5, AKG 240 MKII, Samson C-Control, Sennheiser, Blue,  AKG, RODE,  UA, Grace, Focusrite, Audient, Midas, ART

Re: HELP - real problem with Sonar Platinum NOW SOLVED 2018/03/13 16:15:55 (permalink)
I have installed Sonar a dozen times over this last couple of months as I was making back up systems for the future. ( thank goodness I didn't really need them!)  I open all sorts of projects, old new, templates, midi files transfers from Cubase you name it. And never in my history with Sonar has it created an audio file unless I insert an audio track and record something.

Lately I've been working on over 120 Backing tracks. I decided to remove all audio from these and converted all to midi. So once the audio tracks are deleted or converted to midi  I "save as" and point to a new location and "uncheck" the save audio box. This saves a CWP file as an icon. There is no audio or other folders created.

So I'm am baffled by what you are doing. It was mentioned earlier and you have ignored a few very good suggestions. Are you using a midi track or a simple instrument track? DON'T use a simple instrument track, use a midi track and point it at the VST track. In my signature is a detailed tutorial on using midi with Sonar.
There are dozens of ways to set things up and all will work in the end. My system works for me and over 14 years I have never lost track of how things are saved and stored. See below. 68 projects, no audio 25 MB of storage used. Each song has 4 -7  VST instruments. 4 - 12 midi tracks.

Edit- I just tried something. Took one of the files that is just a CWP file, no audio folder.
Opened it, inserted a soft synth but as a " First synth audio"
No audio folder was created.
Now I insert a synth but I choose " Simple Instrument " and boom,, new audio folder now created.. But it is empty of course. So that is half the mystery solved. Possibly this VST you are using causes the audio samples to be added as well, certainly that is odd.
