HEY YOU - Pink Floyd cover

EDIT - Updated to version with vocals. Used a mix of MIDI and live playing, tried to do the original sound justice as best I could.

Thanks for listening,

Good job overall. Pretty true to the original.

Areas not quite right to me are the finger picked guitar, especially at the beginning. I'm not sure what it is but I think it's that the notes aren't ringing out for long enough or naturally enough. it sounds all most stuttery, not really bad but noticeable to a guitarist. When the strummed acoustic comes in it's much better but returns with the finger picking section again.

I thought the snare was a bit 'in your face' as well especially when it first comes in. Sounds like it's obliterating every thing else at the moment it plays.

That could just be my ears though so I wouldn't take too much notice of me unless others notice it as well.

Like it though, I look forward to hearing the vocal version.

Much appreciated and valid observations which may be (time permitting) addressed as the vocals are added. It would require some recording since the intro guitars are all MIDI. I'm currently enjoying some of your tutorial videos and learning a thing or two more. :-)

I can assure you your MIDI sounds are far better than my attempts at anything acoustic so I know how hard it is to get them just right. I doubt non-guitarists will notice.

Glad you like the videos, thanks.

Beautiful!  Great mix.  You may want a tad more high end at around 10-12 khz?  Check the cymbals.  Nice work.  I could not do this well at all.

Nice sound up to it needs the vocals.  The picked guitar is too good, to on the beat, needs some more feel.

    Thanks for sharing

You did a marvelous job of capturing the vibe of the original version even without the vocal.  As much fun as it was to hear it this way, I can imagine how this would come alive with a good vocal.  I've never found MIDI guitar samples to be equal to the real thing, but this is fairly convincing.  Congratulations an tackling a difficult piece.

Thanks guys. I'm obviously no Mason, Gilmour, Waters and Wright nor do I have their gear to play with, but I did try to recreate the notes and the tempo as closely as I could while adding a few elements to make the mix a bit more modern.

Of course it isn't going to match exactly, like the acoustic strumming might be a little tighter on mine but that's something I went after through multiple takes as it's more my style to keep everything as tight as I can. This song is also very intricate and was a great one to work through as I learned new things about songwriting, which is really my focus these days above and beyond getting the technical points of the mix spot on.

    Re:HEY YOU - Pink Floyd cover 2012/04/12 18:52:48 (permalink)
Hi Pat, no problem. Hi Lynn, I copied this over from my older thread of the instrumental version and edited it appropriately:

The majority came from an old EWQL sample compilation called Colossus. Samples used from that include Acoustic God along with a couple of Washburn acoustic samples, Fretless bass and Silvertone bass samples, suitcase Rhodes and sub sonic bass mod. There is a Hammond Organ patch from B4. There were some patches from Spectrasonics Omnisphere that I can't recall (sorry) for some of the "worms ate into his brain" ambiance, and also probably 8 tracks of AniMoog iPad in the same place. I can't recall which of those were used either as I was just going through the patches and only stopped to record when I found one applicable. There are also some SFX in there of my own design made with various items like salt granules and paper through a distortion pedal and pouring salt (trying to enhance the radio static sound in the worms epilogue.)

Drums were addictive drums, I can't say what each drum was offhand, but it was not a preset kit. Ran those through a doubler effect to widen the sound stage.

The live acoustic guitar is a Takamine G Series recorded through a Shure SM57. Electric guitars are a 87' Jackson strat body and an Ibanez Mike Mushok Baritone guitar, both played through a MESA Rectifier Recording Preamp then run through Redwirez convolution impulse files (and a great little app called "iFace" which makes using those impulses a whole lot easier.) Preamp/audio interface is a MOTU 828MKII. I think that about covers everything that was used.. in addition to a ton of effects and stomps.

I like, I'm only listening to it my laptop at the moment so I'm not going to judge the mix.

I looking forward to the finished version

Thanks Sean.  My library of sounds is very limited. I like hearing where people come up with things.  Appreciate the effort in sharing it.  And look forward to the vocal version:-)

Pat, if you are looking for a good place to start that EWQL Colossus is a pretty good one as it incorporates a bunch of different samples covering all sorts of sounds and instruments. I probably could have gotten away with doing the whole song just using that it's just some of my other libraries offered slightly better options. I forgot to mention, I also used the "Steinway D" piano sample from Colossus mixed in a few parts.

Here is a breakdown of what was programmed with MIDI instruments and what wasn't:

Main acoustic guitar line (opening riff and throughout) = MIDI
    All Bass = MIDI
Keyboards and synth throughout = MIDI
Acoustic guitars strummed throughout = MIDI and live recording mixed
Acoustic guitars during ""it was all just fantasy" section = live recording
Electric guitars throughout = live recording
Sound effects = MIDI and live recording mixed
    Drums = MIDI
Orchestral bits & Piano = MIDI
